There’s No Dignity in Dog Boots
There’s no denying that we’ve been incredibly lucky to have such a long fall- but since the snow started falling and staying on the ground, it’s been an adjustment! My winter clothes have been hauled out of the basement to replace the shorts I hadn’t quite packed away yet, and there have been a couple of times where I’ve scraped ice off my windshield with a CD when I couldn’t find the scraper. But the biggest adjustment in the winter is definitely for the dogs- the days of running outside casually and back in again are decidedly over, and walks become a bit of a production thanks to their blankets and doggy boots.
It’s been really mild here so far, but in the middle of the winter the pads on their feet can freeze, and the salt that business owners throw down on sidewalks can dry out their paws and make them crack. Because our dogs are really little they get uncomfortable very quickly and it makes going for long walks with them impossible.
So we make them wear tiny little boots… and this year I found actual little boots (with soles!) which are fantastic and will last all winter but kind of look like dog sneakers. They’re all kinds of hilarious to me, and the dogs make the best betrayed expressions when we put them on, so I just had to show you our test drive of them last night!
Every time we put them on, the dogs seem more than a little exasperated – but it’s worth it when they can go on walks and be comfy the whole time! And if we don’t burn off their extra energy bad things happen.
Terrifying Case and Point: Yesterday morning they were bored, so they pushed a chair up against our book case, hopped onto the seat, put their paws on the back of the chair, and pulled wooden Christmas ornaments out of the highest shelves. Did I mention that Ash knows how to open the DVD player? And that he can open drawers?
Schipperke problem solving is not to be underestimated! Keeping them too tired to be bored & creative about entertaining themselves is a way of life.
Want to see more of our winter shenanigans?
Last winter I make a little video of Ash running on our treadmill :)
Edit: Since you’re asking, the dog’s boots are Zack & Zooey’s high tops, I’ve had some trouble with the zippers on them, but over all I’m completely pleased with them. The dogs are able to walk much farther than in any other boots we’ve tried, and they haven’t fallen off at all! They’re going to make the winter much easier :)
I’m wayyyy behind on my blog reading, but I couldn’t let this one go by without a comment. Have the pups adjusted to their booties yet? I’m definitely buying them for my dog, dignity be damned.
Oh my! Look at all that snow! We haven’t had our first yet here in Chicago, but it looks so festive and pretty! Love the doggie boots too. If I had a Little Face of my own, you know they’d be wearing coats and boots too!
Hahahahhahahaha this is hilariousssss!
I absolutely love that your dogs wear these for their walks in the snow. And that they have little jackets. And that they don’t pitch fits when you put the boots on their paws. I thought about getting some of this for Lucy last winter, but since it didn’t get too cold, we went without them. Who knows what will happen this one, though, and she might be wearing her own version of a coat and boots!
Heeeee! I love dressing animals up. I think I’m a bad person.
LMAOSDfdghfdkjdd. We had dog boots for our shepherd and I keep thinking they’d be good for our pups, though we don’t quite get snow the same as you but Sean mocks me. HELLO, pad health is vital!
But regardless, the second picture down — is it Mal? Ash? In the green jacket? I DIED. That pure fluff of cute in his wee jacket and boots, omg. And the facial expression. <3
Haha this is HILARIOUS! And so cute!
Those are beyond adorable!! Your pups expressions just crack me up! I could only imagine what my dog would do if I put boots on her. She’s such a prima donna when it gets cold (relatively speaking of course since we live in SoCal). If it’s raining or under a certain temperature, she refuses to go outside without a sweater. I get the stink eye from her when I try to put them on, but it definitely beats cleaning up accidents in the house!
Oh my goodness, they’re SOOOO cute! That’s absolutely adorable. And wow, you guys have a lot of snow already. It hasn’t started up in Michigan! Yet… :(
Ahh! They are adorable. If I could find some for Sandy’s big paws I would probably get some for her. She’s good about me putting ridiculous things on her head but I think she would draw the line at shoes.
That second photo is just the best, I love it. I adore puppy faces, they’re so much more expressive than people realize. :)
Your dogs are such fashionistas and I can’t believe the things they do…climb on chairs, open DVD players? Crazy!
HA! omg my poor Daisy (bichon) kind of walks with her back legs kicking out to the sides.
I video’d it, ‘cuz I’m mean like that. heheee!
Hers fall off all of the time though. I went to the website you put up and now I’m thinking maybe I have the wrong size. I bought them at the pet store and from what I remember, there wasn’t many sizes to choose from.
Thanks for the link!
AND the laugh! :)
My guys walk with their paws up around their ears when they’re inside- but as soon as they’re out the door they’re psyched and we can’t move fast enough for them, they’re totally distracted and we can just walk :)
But when we put these on them Mal did get scared of the noise the soles made, and tried to run away from it. Saddest thing I’ve ever seen in my life! I had to pick him up right away to calm him down lol :(
OMG! SNOW! I’m So Jealous! It Was 78 Degrees Here Today. I’m Not Sure Why It’s Been So Abnormally Warm! The Dog Boots Are Tre Adorable! I Just Love The Zippers! (:
I’m just commenting again to tell you that your gravatar for non-gravatar-having commenters is too cute! So funny! Glasses AND boots!
bahahahahahahahahah oh my gooooooosh. the second photo just killed me with giggles. he looks SO MAD at you. hahah i’m dying. I just showed my sister and she died with laughter too. heehee!
the little booties are so damn cute. I want a puppy just so i can torment it with little booties!!
Aww, little guys :)

Ohhh! This is so adorable! I love their little shoes and coats! Your doggies have such sweet faces! :o) I’m so jealous of your snow – it looks like a winter wonderland there!
xo – Amy
Your dogs are absolutely beautiful! They look soo cute in their little booties.
Your little doggies look so cute. It never gets that cold where we live, but if it did I would for sure get my little Jake a pair of doggie boots and a coat!
This boots are so ridiculously adorable on them, I might die.
HA! These pictures are hilarious. That second one is priceless, hehe! Poor doggies…they look utterly humiliated.
Luckily, it doesn’t get too cold around here that my dog needs shoes but we do make him wear a tiny little jacket for his small body! But he just loves it and walks around with his head held high, so proud of himself like, “Look at me! I am handsome!” ;)
Ack! Poor little pups!
Ha – I may have to pick some of these up for my monsterpups. The salt is horrible on their feet. I have a balm for their pads but they just lick it off.
Hillary, if you don’t buy these for your puppies I want to send them to you guys as Christmas presents! 100% serious, just tell me the sizes you need. After we went on our first walk with them my first thought was “When Hillary and I skype I have to tell her about these for Wolfgang and Stella!” :)
Are you skype-able next week, by the way? :)
ohhh nooooo, this is hysterical!!! lol!!! Oh my gosh, i love it. Mal’s face is such a hoot and I love how cozy they both look in their little sweaters!
Oh-my-effing-god! You just officially made my day before 10:00am. Thanks to you and Ash and Mal of course.
Haha, they’re so cute! I bet they wouldn’t be happier with frozen or cracked paws though (just reading that made me cringe, poor puppies).
I need to go measure my fuzzybutts’ paws so I can buy them some. If they don’t fall off yours, I’m going to hope it works the same with mine. Thanks for sharing where you got them!
I love the look on Mal’s face – it just makes him even more adorable.
Yes! These are totally worth it- honestly, I can’t tell you how many times we had to turn around and jog the route we walked to try and find one of the damn boots we’d lost last winter!!! lol Almost no shops had small enough sizes for them, so if we lost them it was really hard to replace them.
Never. Again.
It’s so funny, but I’ve been looking for doggie boots as well, the only problem is that our pup is growing and in some brands she’s in between sizes. They definitely look ridiculous but are needed, I have a coat for my dog too! She looks silly but at least she’s warm!
hahah! those are hilarious… :)
but probably comfy, at the very least.
So cute :D We have a jacket for Chloe but still need to find her some booties. She’s such a wimp that she’ll sit at the door until we put her coat on – if Nathan refuses (because he doesn’t think it’s super cold out) he has to pick her up to get her out the door.
That’s so cute! I love that Chloe *wants* her cold weather gear- our guys are still totally happy to bound outside in the middle of the winter- but they beg to come in in two seconds :)
How cute! I’m totally smitten with your pups!
By the way, my husband loves the pictures of Ash and Mal. He now wants a schipperke one day when we are settled enough to have a dog.
lol Oh my gosh Megan, I love them but seriously don’t. Our dogs are so high maintenence it’s not even funny. I love them madly, but they’re more nuts than Jack Russel Terriers. When they’re angels (in 18+ years) we’ve already pinky sworn that our next dog will be a totally laid back golden retriever :)
So adorable though! When we lived in Alaska we had this problem with our dog. He was a Gordan Setter, but our neighbors had Huskies. Our dog always wanted to play with them, but they were built for cold weather. Once his toes got frostbitten and it was so awful. I’m sure my parents would have liked something like this. :) Smokey would not, on the other hand, have liked them. I bet his Husky friends would totally laugh at him if he was wearing these. Heehee.
Aw I’m sure not having enough cred to hang with the huskies would have been worth warm paws :) I hope he’s much warmer these days! I bet anywhere would feel like Florida in comparison.
Also, I didn’t know you lived in Alaska Alex!! Have you blogged about that? I would love to read more about it, let me know :)
Oh my goodness, the pictures are hilarious… they both really look humiliated and betrayed, haha! But it’s only for their own good!
I love it! :) I just bought my puppy her first set of dog boots (http://unicornpara.de/2010/11/21/winter-means-dog-boots/), they’re like little rubber sockies, it’s so funny.
Your dogs’ boot look great, I like that they have a zipper AND velcro- my big dog has boots with just velcro and he can undo them and take them off himself.
The dual closure kind of rocks! I can definitely tell that you’re Canadian from your noticing that feature lol Your dogs boots are super cute too! I love that you guy has learned to remove them himself- I think if my dogs could attend a seminar on that they’d be all over that.
Are they Schipperkes? I had a roommate in college whose parents had one and that dog was soooo smart. Whenever it was mad at her for something it went into her room and took her underwear out of the drawer and tore it up. Such smart, cute little dogs!
They are Schipperkes! You’re one of like….10 people who has ever been able to identify them! lol Nicely done! You win a prize. It’s custody of my dogs! ;)
They’re super funny, Ash strips the binding off of books when he’s mad at us- but only because we’ve long since put the laundry behind closed doors :)
You’re lucky to have such wintery wonderland outside! It’s still in the 80’s down here despite Chrstimas music blasting from all the stores. It’s so sad.
Hahaha! The second dog picture, it looks so humiliated!
I know, poor Mal! The look on his face is just “…….Um…..what did I do to deserve this?”
Hahahahahaha! That is definitely the FUNNIEST thing I’ve ever seen. They look cute, though. No need to be ashamed Mal ;)
Can we get a product review? I’ve been looking for suitable boots (humiliation) for my dog too.
Definitely! I just edited the post, and the dog’s boots are Zack & Zooey’s high tops. We’ve had a little trouble with the zippers being sticky (and one of them broke) but even with that, they’re far and away much better than anything else we’ve tried :) The dogs are much comfier and can walk for a super long time without being uncomfortable. They were freaked out by them initially, but now when they get them on they get super excited to run around outside- I think they know the alternative is cold paws :)
Thanks Kyla! I’m going to try them out. Slayer’s paws are always so cold when
we get back inside – that can’t feel good. So we’ll see if he will tolerate
some puppy boots. :)
ha ha!
At this point, in our -14*F weather we’re currently experiencing, my dogs get big balls of ice stuck to their feet within a few seconds of being outside. I’m thinking boots like Mal and Ash have are in order, because I had to pick my Velvet up and bring her back inside this morning, because she couldn’t walk with all the snow/ice stuck in her little paws!
Aw that’s so sad! Dog boots will definitely help that situation out a lot- it just makes it more comfy for them. It’s a bit of a hassle but it makes me feel like a much better puppy mama :)
Yeah, I really can’t imagine actually trying to get them on my dogs… just getting a vest on my female springer is a feat! But I think this year, especially, I’ll have to try it because their little paws just freeze!
Thos pictures are PRICELESS – they look so unimpressed lol :) But that’s what they get for being sneaky!!
Maybe no dignity, but LOTS of cute!! Wow, they are scary smart!
OMG, I am having the same problem with my dog- except she REFUSES the booties. I bought a ‘test’ pair at Dollarama (yes they have them, they have EVERYTHING) knowing she hates it when I touch her feet. Yeah, no go. Usually, she’s fine all winter, but this winter seems to be different. I had to carry the poor little mite the last 20 minutes of our walk last night. Sigh. I might actually be investing in a treadmill myself this winter.
PS: Where did you get those jackets? So cute!
We found the same thing with Mal initially- he hated having them on and hated walking with them. Getting them on last (after I’ve bundled up) has really helped so he’s not stressed for a long time, and we just don’t let him stop walking, or react at all when he throws a mini tantrum with them on. I’ll act super happy and sometimes help him keep moving with treats- but we just never pick him up so it’s not an option in his mind. After a few walks he just learned that walking was the only option and kind of got over it. I hope that helps!
We got the jackets at our local pet shop a few years ago :)
This is so funny…your dogs are cuties <3
xo, Mel
OMG they have zippers! this is hilarious. thanks so much for sharing!
Where’s the favorite button?? This is so funny and awesome!!! I totally recognize the looks on their faces, hilarious! xo
We tried these in Cambridge and it was a MASSIVE failure for us! Granted, my dogs’ ankles are barely anything more than a nub, but we still died laughing over it all. I’m always amazed by how much energy and gusto little pups have!
