The Pumpkin Search & Rushmore Moments
When this weekend came I could hardly believed the week had raced by already! I love those weeks when everything is packed just tightly enough – you’re busy and “in it” the whole time, but magically everything can still get done. There were multiple trips to the post office that made me thankful I had Friday off, and that I had enough fancy packing tape on hand- I love sending out pretty packages.
I’m excited to report that I solved my seasonal drink problem this weekend! (Not a seasonal drinking problem mind you, that would be a different post!) I’ve been trying to pick myself drink for every season (because I’m a geek!) and so far fall… hasn’t been happening. I promised myself that last month I would try to learn to love the pumpkin spice latte, but between the neon orange milk and almost gingerbread smell, I’ve had to accept that I just can’t do it! There’s just something about them that freaks me out.
But the good news is I’ve settled on up my own fall drink: A mocha latte with a salted caramel top. I always get mine with soy milk, and it’s even more heavenly. Salted Caramel anything is pretty much my favourite right now.
On Sunday, Jesse planned a little fall getaway for us. It had been a long week and right at the end of it Jesse got some exciting work related news, and I found out that A Little Thistle is being picked up by two local shops! We wanted to have a little celebration, and a pumpkin hunt sounded perfect. We went to a giant brunch and ended up finding the perfect pumpkins much sooner than we’d thought, and I’m going to start working on something that will top my Twilight pumpkins from last year.
Though what that will be, I’m not sure :)
The highlight of my weekend was a “Winnipeg Moment” – I was listening to a voice mail from my Dad at the same moment we passed him and his godson playing with R/C cars in a park by our house! His godson is a hilarious little guy and ran over to me, immediately intent on making sure I knew how to race his R/C car.
I caught on quickly, and soon we were racing – and soon after that I was wishing they were R/C airplanes and I was wearing a tam!
I think that either I’ve watched Rushmore too many times, or I need to re-register for high school, sign up for some extracurriculars and watch the movie again immediately. Show of hands?
It’s so exciting knowing one of those pretty packages might be mine! I can’t wait.
Also, you’ve given me an insane craving for salted caramel.
Oh, and one more thing! This week I’ve been mixing a spoonful of canned pumpkin and a dash of pumpkin spices into my coffee. It’s delicious! And I tell myself it’s extra wonderful for me, adding a bit of fiber and vitamin A to my coffee! :D
I am about to go to work. I would so much rather stay home and watch Rushmore!
So… for those of us working on small businesses ourselves, I would love some “how to” posts on the steps you have taken so far. How did you get picked up at shops? Did you just walk in and introduce yourself and ask them to sell your product? Or send them info? Or… how please =-)
I’ve never seen Rushmore but I’ve been meaning to for ages because it was filmed in Houston. Adding it to my queue right now.
I simply adore you, Kyla. I always find your posts to be uplifting & inspiring & full of life. <3
I am so, so glad that A Little Thistle is doing so well! I'm hoping to purchase a scarf from you soon–maybe even one for my sister! I may have to be in contact with you for something custom, if you'd be interested in that.
That mocha latte looks amazing, lady. I'll be grabbing one for myself on Friday. (Making a note of it in my cell phone right now.)
Will we be seeing photos of Halloween house decorations this year? ;)
Oh, looks you had a fun time! I am not one for sugary coffee drinks, but your new favorite sounds amazing! I might just have to give it a try!
Rushmore = awesome
Congrats on the local pick up of your store! That is amazing new. And your pumpkin is adorable! Such a great choice. I love pumpkin hunting.
Well, I don’t love coffee, but I LOVE the salted caramel hot chocolate. I haven’t had one yet this year–must remedy that ASAP!
Is there a pumpkin patch around town that I don’t know about or did you just get the pumpkins at the store?
ps. I love salted caramel anything too!
Holy!! A Winnipegger? So excited to check out your blog! :)
There are a number of nurseries just outside of town to the south that you can go to, but superstore actually has a really good deal on right now that (I think/hope) is less expensive than buying per pound.
And if you’re looking for local pumpkin patches and corn mazes, there’s lots! This is a great starting point:

That’s awesome that your cute shop is blooming with all these awesome raves about it! :)
How exciting for your store! “Yasher koach,” as the Jews say. It means something like “way to go, you should be proud.” ;)
And I had a salted caramel hot chocolate today following the Twitter convo I butted into between you & Alana. I diiiiiie.
Congrats on the store’s success! I love what you have in there.
That Starbucks looks delicious! I’ll have to try that out.
Your etsy shop is my new favorite thing. I am constantly amazed by your crafty talent! <3
What a lovely weekend! And congratulations on getting A Little Thistle picked up–that’s amazing!
How do you describe your drink to the Starbucks barista? They don’t have that drink on the menus here.
Hey Maddy! I say it just as it’s written “A mocha latte with a salted caramel top”. Its an espresso version of a fancy hot chocolate they had on the menu last year, and (I think) it’s the same as the toffee nut latte top, only with caramel instead of the toffee nut topping… but I might be entirely wrong lol
Whenever I order it they always pause for a second and then figure out a way to make it happen :)
I’ll have to give that a try sometime this week. :o)
Sounds like such a lovely weekend. Had to laugh at the season drink probably v. seasonal drinking problem. Very clever.
I also love salted caramel anything. I was bummed that they didn’t have that flavor of ice cream when we were at Sebastian Joes in August. They have carried it in the past and I have always wanted to try it!!
How delightful!!! Congrats on Little Thistle!!! And I love the Salted Caramel Mochas. Pretty much heaven in a cup. I think that my Fall seasonal drink award goes to the Toffee Mocha. Delicious!!!
:)
Mmmm now I pretty much HAVE to get a pumpkin spice latte today. Sorry that you don’t like them. They are delcious! hehehe! I’ll have your share then! The mocha latte you talked about sounded really good too!!! mmm mmm!!! Your weekend sounded fun! i want to go to a pumpkin patch sometime soon!
Oh, isn’t it the most satisfying feeling to get some pretty packages in the mail?
I love that!
And I can’t wait to see your pumpkins! I think we’re going to carve pumpkins this year, too. (We skipped last year and it was awful.)
Can’t wait to see what the pumpkins look like this year =) You two are Halloween rockstars.
Glad you had a lovely weekend and racing cars? So fun!
I will have to try that drink the next time I go :) I’m so excited and happy your shop is doing so well. That is fantastic. Can’t wait to see what you do with these pumpkins!! Love the pictures :)
Awww your weekend sounds so lovely!
I can’t wait to see what you carve out of those pumpkins :)
I had a salted caramel hot chocolate last week, but I never thought of asking them to do it on a mocha. I get sort of uncomfortable asking for unusual drinks at Starbucks, but people do it all the time. I might just suck it up and try your drink today!
okay wow. i went back and looked at your twilight pumpkins. how did you DO that?
also that drink is absolutely for sure what i’m getting the next time i go to starbucks [this afternoon?].
You have no idea how glad I am to hear that someone else isn’t swooning over the pumpkin spice latte. I normally end up getting the same-old same-old infrustration come fall. Thank you for suggesting an alternative! I’m going to try your drink next time. I love salted caramel, too.
(I’m going crazy because my boyfriend clearly had a deprived, insane childhood, because he keeps saying we can’t go pumpkin hunting until like 3 days before halloween. WHAT IS THIS? haha)
Kyla, I’m so happy for you that A Little Thistle is doing so well! Those packages are so cute! Are they the items you’ve already sold on your store?
Yes and no, I’m going to be selling some of my necklaces, new headbands, and new knits- but I’ll definitely take pictures like the geek that I am! :)
Okay first off, I love that you clarified between a seasonal drink and seasonal drinking! Sounds like your week was amazing – and how exciting both about Jesse and A Little Thistle!!!! A fall getaway sounds like just the ticket!
I love mocha latte!!
I need a weekend off too, because this last one I had classes and tests…
You really found the perfect pumpkin! Good luck with it!
those packages make me wanna get mail from you, too. :) looking forward to finding out what the 2010 punkins may be. we’ll carve some time this week as well. yay for fall.
Wow, you look so adorable on the last picture :) Great!
