The Long Drive West
You know that thing where you plan something for so long that it starts to seem like it will always be off on a distant horizon? That’s the story of this road trip. Up until the day before we left it felt like the trip was miles away, until suddenly bags were being tossed in the car, the dogs were gone, and it felt like even the house was shooing us out the door.
The route was simple: we had ten days to drive from Winnipeg (dead centre of Canada, north of North Dakota) and drive through the northern US, into the mountains to Seattle, then up to Vancouver, through the mountains to Calgary and home to the prairies. Over 6000 km and 3700 miles – nothing more than a jaunt ;)
The first few days took us through North Dakota, South Dakota and into Montana. The country is beautiful there – it all feels like home to me. There was lots of coffee and listening to classic radio mysteries (The Strangler! The Haunted Typewriter!) on the XM radio that Mister bought for the trip. We had a massive Mount Rushmore fail that had me falling down laughing in the parking lot, and made me want to take a series of photos of it for our living room. I’m pleased to inform you that between giggling fits I’ve perfectly refined my pitch for a “National Monuments Obscured By Mist” coffee table book.
We made a stop to see Serena Ryder in Missoula, Montana (she was playing with the Barenaked Ladies) and had a great time out with all the college kids in town – I even made friends with some college football players after I broke up a fight! “Nice Block” is about the best complement a girl can hope for some of the time, don’t you think?
{In North & South Dakota I recommend: The Hotel Donaldson in Fargo & checking the weather before you go to Mount Rushmore!!}
We wound through the prairies into rocky hills and mountains, and as the elevation started to skyrocket we knew we were in rural Washington. There were orchards everywhere, tiny little run down towns and amazing Mexican places at every turn. After a long day we found Winthrop, a perfect little Western town tucked into the mountains and found where we were staying: The Rolling Huts!
The Rolling Huts are six beautifully minimalist cabins designed by a local architectural firm, each with its own own patio, picnic area and fireplace. The on site restaurant just opened and while the servers were still figuring it out, the food was amazing. Incredible wine and some of the best tapas I’ve ever had. The huts were a little rustic (no plumbing) but for a very plush camping experience near breweries, wineries, and all kinds of outdoorsiness they were the perfect break from the road.
{For a fancy camping experience I recommend: The Rolling Huts in Winthrop, WA}
Word of advice: When you are driving in the mountains, take the interstate. Even if it’s under construction and there’s another road that’s really close. Take the interstate. Especially take the interstate if you have a fear of heights. Really especially take the interstate if you sometimes get motion sick because you’re from the prairies and aren’t used to winding through harrowing mountain passes. Disregard if you’re Mister, but be prepared to have a cranky wife on your hands.
That being said, when we actually got to Seattle I was fairly sure I had died on a mountain pass and ended up in heaven. Seattle is everything I could want in a city, only better. The Pike Place market was outstanding, and everywhere you went there was history, scores of local restaurants and tiny shops. There were houses, apartments, and condos, clubs and breakfast places and specialty ice cream shops. As a city planning geek, I was amazed.
After working together on Four Little Pots all spring Moorea and I finally met! She pulled Mister and I out of Capitol Hill and into a great vegetarian breakfast place that made up for all the lacklustre veg food in the mid west. Seattle completely won my heart, and the next chance I get to explore it more I’ll be there!
{In Seattle I recommend: Maximus / Minimus for vegan pulled pork, Le Pichet for perfect French food & ambiance, Molly Moon’s Handmade Ice Cream for an otherworldly ice cream experience & Hopvine Pub for the best salsa & hummus I’ve had in a very long time.}
The only negative was that the pace of this trip wore me out- we were spending one full day in a place, then driving to the next & repeating the process. After a week of constant exploring, walking and dining out we were done! But getting into Vancouver was the perfect homecoming. We met up with old friends for lunch & dinner, and then curled up with wine in the hotel lounge and slept in late the next morning.
We walked for six hours, had lunch with my bloggy friend Hillary, did the art gallery and dodged bouts of rain. And we even went to a shop that had ripped me off the last time I was in Vancouver and got money back for the purchase I’d made six months before, returned to them by mail & that they then refused to refund me for!! Total vindication! We rode the sky train, ate great Indian Food, and rested up. On a rainy Vancouver day, there’s nothing more I’d like to do.
{In Vancouver I recommend: Finch’s for fantastic baguettes in a perfectly styled hipster tea shop & Steamworks for yam fries.}
We had to cut a lot off the end of the trip- there were people I wanted to meet and places we had been planning to explore but with barely 24 hours in a city we were really limited. The weather became grey on the drive home, and we were met by snow in Calgary! Without warm clothes and with a fourteen hour drive from home we made the decision to leave the day after we arrived.
All in all, the trip was amazing. There were great meals, invented in jokes, and so much laughing that as corny as it sounds, the driving really was the best part. Being away crystalized a lot for me: from how much fun it is to moonlight as a nomad, to how much I adore The Little House, and what I need to be happy.
We’ve suffered a lot of rain since we came home and our basement is flooded, but I’m so happy to be here again I don’t even care. After a cooking & baking binge we have home made salsa, apple muffins & granola in the kitchen, puppies milling around my feet and family & friends close by. Everything I need is right here… including a shop vac and dehumidifier – and if that’s not romance, I’m not sure what is.
It sounds like you had SUCH a wonderful time on your road trip, however exhausting it may have been to be going from place to place each day. :) One of these days I’ll get my act together and Joe and I will take a little trip of our own…and since you made Seattle sound so inviting, maybe we’ll just head north and keep going until we get to meet YOU!
Yes!! I think you have to, it’s decided! :)
Oh this makes me crave a road trip so much! I want to explore North & South Dakota and Montana so bad! The pictures I’ve seen from there are just totally breathtaking and it always looks like the sky is SO CLOSE.

I can’t believe you couldn’t see a THING at Mount Rushmore! I think your idea for a coffee table book would be hugely popular ;-) I love road trips too – and especially love old time radio!! Fibber McGee and Molly and Burns and Allen are so much fun! And The Shadow! It sounds like a lovely, lovely road trip!!

sounds like a wonderful trip, :) we went on a shorter 4-day trip, hitting up fewer places, but it was still a 2,000 mile drive roundtrip.

Love this! what a lovely road trip. I travel a lot as well, so it was so sweet to discover your blog and follow your journey! And what gorgeous photos you take…..
When I drove through Monument Valley, it was winter and everything except the road was whited-out. I feel your Rushmore pain. :3 What a great travel story! Thanks so much for sharing it. It’s been a year and a half since my last road trip; now I want to get back to it!

What a romantic recap of your drive. I’m pretty sure we overlapped the drive from Fargo to Missoula (and maybe even up to NW Montana if you cut up that way). It’s a beautiful ride and it really does make sense why that part of the country is called Big Sky! I don’t know about you, but I absolutely adore my roadtrip time with Sweets. It’s just the two of us. No interruptions. And even when you have a destination in mind, each day unravels with surprises and spontaneity. Yay for your vacation!
Yayyyy! So happy to hear you had a wonderful trip and are home safe and sound. Isn’t the Pacific Northwest just about one of the damn coolest places ever??

Looks like you had a blast. Next time you need to plan for more than 24 hours a city. Sometimes I wish we could pack more hours in a day.
Such lovely pics (and HILLARY! Again!! <3) , I love the new style of them too :) Glad you guys had an amazing time!

I love road trips and I’m so glad you had a blast! although yes, snow in Calgary is a bit ridiculous, but sadly not unexpected…

What a trip! Sounds/looks like it was excellent; I’d really love to someday be able to go on a trip like this, just driving through the country & seeing all kinds of things & meeting up with all kinds of people. Now is not the time for me, but maybe sometime in the future? And better with a partner anyway, which I’m without!
And what IS vegan pulled pork, anyway??

Sounds like a dream come true. And I agree with you that Seattle is absolutely amazing! If you liked it there, you should journey even further south and try Portland. Oh, and of course San Francisco, though that might be for a few selfish reasons ;) Glad you’re safe home in The Little House.
Beautiful! Loos like you had a trip full of memories to last a lifetime…
And if you ever decide to head East, I know there are just a couple people who’d like to see you :)

Glad you guys had a good time!
I am in LOVE with The Rolling Huts! We have so many road-trips planned but I’d like to do one through the US prairies (Montana, Wyoming, etc.) and that would be the perfect place to loop back through on the way home.
We love Leavenworth, WA, a charming little Bavarian village, and we stayed in a Kamping Kabin at the KOA outside of town. They are also a great alternative to tenting and the one we got sleeps 6! Not as cute at the Rolling Huts but still nice.
Now I’m getting really excited for our trip out West!

Glad you had such a great time :) XO
that sounds so wonderful, and I’m so glad you guys made it to Le Pichet. It’s one of those places in my head that is just.. bliss.
glad you’re home safe and sound! missed you!
xo
WOW! It looks like you had such a great time!!! I’m so in love with your little snippets of the road trip – it’s like peeling through an antique store and coming across so many little gems that may or may not have anything to do with each other =) I’d really love to check out those rolling huts too on day. Ultimately though, coming home does feel great and is a highly undervalued part of any trip.

Your trip sounds positively day dreamy. The rolling huts, Seattle, the driving, it all sounds divine. I am so glad that you had such a fun time with Mister but that you’re home back in the prairies with your pups. Stay dry!
You broke up a fight and got money back from six months ago – you’re a total badass!!!

That road trip sounds amazing…. I would love to take a trip like that!!
Wow, this post relaxes me so much :D I love stories of adventure; it reminds me of Stand By Me. I’m so glad you had a good time. If I went on a roadtrip around England I would be very disappointed because it’s not really a place for roadtrips… but I’ve always wanted to do what you’ve done, like the exact same trip!!

I know exactly how you feel. I absolutely adore traveling and exploring new places… but there’s something about coming home. We had the most amazing time on our honeymoon, but that first night home with our two dogs in our apartment was just perfect.
