The Big Next Thing!

I find that every now and then, life lets something wonderful fall into your lap that’s better that what we would hope for ourself. There’s usually the normal static, anticipation, unknowing and stress surrounding big opportunities, but once in a while it falls away and everything falls into place.

And leads to vague  happy tweets:

So what’s the giant, unexpected thing that’s happened?

We bought our dream house!

Jesse and I haven’t been looking at houses but last Friday (July 27th) he noticed that a house near ours was up for sale. It’s a big beautiful four bedroom home with a big yard, a dishwasher (what will I do with all my spare time?!), and enough space for us to have a family. And it’s in our dream neighbourhood, and we could afford it. I felt like I must have been misunderstanding something about it- it seemed unbelievable that it could be for sale and in the realm of possibility.

While I’ve loved our little house and haven’t wanted to leave, after four years in under 700 feet I was starting to feel sad that unless we were to start stacking children and dogs like cords of word that it would be a struggle to start a family where we were. It was already impossible for us to have our friends and family over because we didn’t have anywhere for more than six of us to sit down, and while I’ve loved the quirks of “living little” I’ve started to brush up against the limitations of it too. Taking a simple, minimalist approach to life is something that will always be part of how I live, but doing that inside a larger home is going to bring amazing possibilities into our future- all without the stress of having to relocate to a new neighbourhood, where our families and Freckled Nest’s studio is. Luckily, everything that we needed to happen did, and by Monday evening last week we knew that we had everything in place to make an offer.

Ready for the crazy part of this?

We saw the listing go up on Friday, we bid on the house at 7 pm the next Wednesday and had our offer accepted by 8 pm that night. Real estate in the prairies might be crazy, but it’s pretty affordable and is worth the stress! None the less, this house is definitely winning the award for largest impulse purchase I’ve ever made.

Even crazier? Our possession date is early September… so we have to list our house in ten days!

I’m completely up for the challenge and we’ve started work on the short list that we need to polish the house up and put it on the market. Boxes have started appearing, and there are spreadsheets flying between google accounts as Jesse and I try to coordinate all the little things that come with this opportunity. It’s a crazy time and I’m excited for everything to begin- and only a little sad that someone else will get to enjoy my pretty teal kitchen.

The upside? The teal paint is moving with us :)

So… anyone want to help me pack?
