Tattoo Inspiration
Tomorrow’s the day that I’m going for my consultation with my tattoo artist about building onto the cherry blossom tattoo that I started this year. I’m so excited to hear his ideas when I give him my photo references, and to start dreaming about what this is going to look like when it’s finished. I loved sharing my photo references before my shoulder piece was started last spring so you guys could follow the process from beginning to end, so I’m going to keep it up while I work on two three quarter sleeves over the next year and a half…
The concept is that I’m building onto my existing cherry blossoms, so my my left arm will be cherry blossoms and birds perched in the branches, representing elements in my life that ground me. These are the birds I’ve chosen…
And each of the birds is going to be holding onto small ribbons in the colours of the birthstones of each of my family members And a ribbon will be woven through the piece, tying all of the parts of my history and future together in a bow. I love the way my artist does birds in a really gorgeous hyper real style, and I can’t wait to see the stencil next month :)
I really love this idea, I think it will be beautiful when it’s all done, can’t wait to see it!
I think you put that perfectly! That’s exactly why I chose these ones :)
I love this and the family significance behind it. I recently learned that there are birth flowers just like birth stones. On my upper arm I have a cute little frog (I have collected frogs my entire life). So, I have a dream of having all the flowers come over my shoulder and above him, like flower rain. :)
Oh my gosh, I am so obsessed with tattoos and want one so bad. You picked LOVELY bird choices and I think the tattoos you already have are beautiful. I also have to say, owls ROCK. :)
that sounds like it’s going to be so lovely! can’t wait to see the finished piece!
Love when tattoos have significant meaning; can’t wait to see the result!
I love Chickadees so much! We don’t really have them where I live right now but they’re so pretty and cute!
Those are such great additions to our tattoo. i cannot wait to see the final product!
Here’s my bird:

oh kyla, i just love where you are going with these design inspirations. i cannot wait to see your tattoo. :) thanks for sharing.
oh my goodness, this is so fantastic! i love that everything has such meaning/memories attached… i can’t wait to see how everything will look! this is so fun. :)
You’ve chosen some proud, beautiful birds there! The Chickadee reminds me of family values, as that’s what my dad calls me, hehe. All of those birds have a common theme tying them altogether – loyalty, as they’re native, steadfast and hardworking in their own ways <3
Can't wait to see your progress!
Holy cow, this is going to be AMAZING. I seriously cannot wait for pictures!!
i love all the symbolism and thought put into this!
I love your tattoo ideas! So gorgeous! You existing one is stunning also!
VERY cool. I have to confess that I was skeptical of your giant tattoos at first (skeptical, not critical! I promise!), but they are so YOU & just so darn pretty & they’ve really grown on me as I get to know you more through your blog. I’m excited to see how the next phase turns out!
This is going to look gorgeous!
I am excited to see the final product!

I can’t wait to see pictures of the finished product :) I love when people have tattoos with so much symbolism!
Fun! I love how much thought you put into this!
How fun! I love bird tattoos with meaning – quail are seen just about everywhere in AZ, and they’re monogamous and travel everywhere with their little families. I think it would be the sweetest thing to have a quail family tattoo!!
Can’t wait to see the progress :)
such an amazing idea i love the concept :)

I can’t wait to see it. I have a tiny sparrow tattoo on my wrist but I want more. I love the deep wells of meaning you have behind each bird. I can’t wait to see what the artist comes up with!
This sounds so delightful!! What amazing tattoo ideas. It’s going to look so incredible. Aw! I can’t wait to see the progression… <3
Love this! Chickadees are my favourite… and owls and canaries are right up there. I love the thought and meaning you put into your tattoos.
AHHHH CHICAKDEES! I am soooo hearing their sound in my head right now! I love those little birds – I don’t know if there are any down south (Kamloops) I can’t remember hearing one for a long time but they are all over Fort St. John area. I just had a HUGE flashback to my childhood so thank you for that :)
I LOVE this tattoo you’re building out and think it’s amazing how much it is symbolizing your life. Can’t wait to see and hear more about it :)
Love these!! Esp. the chickadee… too awesome/cute!
Dude. Love the birds! Esp. the chickadee. They’re so damn adorable.
I have my little Sailor Jerry style swallow on my back, and I love it. I’m super excited to see what your artist dreams up.
I love this idea, Kyla! Its going to be beautiful and I can’t wait to see what the finished product looks like. The birds and the colors are going to be amazing.
I can’t wait to see it through the stages and as an end result! It’s going to be so beautiful! (All I can think is how much this might all hurt – you’re so tough!)
I love this!! I can’t wait to see more progress… it’s going to be so beautiful (even more so!), and it’s wonderful knowing how meaningful it is as a whole :)
Ah! I love that you chose birds that mean something to you; that’s just amazing. I can’t wait to see the finished product hopefully on here and in person! <3.
