A little pilgrimage
There’s something about the music that I listened to when I was between high school and university that worked it’s way into my bones, and when I hear a Something Corporate song, from fun pop punk and sweeping epics, everything in me gets taken back to those days of endless maybes and lazy summers.
When Mister found tickets to the 10 year anniversary show days before it was taking place, I knew it was the perfect time & reason to go. I haven’t gone on a road trip to see a show in forever, and I can’t think of anything more summery than that! So we dropped the puppies off with Mister’s family, piled into the car & hit the road.
This is a little peek at our trip…
It was a really fun show- wonderful and odd, because they are definitely a band I listened to a while ago & they broke up in 2005, so with no new music so it was more like going to a “best of” show, if that makes sense?
It seemed like because of that the audience was all over the map, from underage kids comparing notes on their favourite lyrics, to music fans with their “All Access” warped tour passes casually displayed, to huge punk guys with their lyrics written into tattoos. And by the end of the show even the cool kids at the back were letting on that they knew all the words.
Even to Punk Rock Princess.
Okay, especially to Punk Rock Princess :)
It was fun to be there, and a great little break from reality.
What was the last show you made a pilgrimage to?
Sounds like a fantastic trip, Kyla! I love get aways like that. My brother, friends, and I love concerts and drive to Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indy….if its summer and there’s a show we want to see, we’ll drive where ever.
WAIT. The show was at the Cabooze?! GIRL. SO JEALOUS, but so glad you had such a great time!
the same thing happens to me when i hear an old song! just hearing music can transport a person back in time – so sometimes i’m hit with an overwhelmingly happy feeling, sometimes it’s a sad one.
i was never a big fan of something corporate, but it looks like you had fun!
It has been so long since I listened to Something Corporate, but they definitely remind me of my first few years at LSU, and it makes me so happy that you were able to venture with Jesse to this show! It sounds like it was a fantastic time, and I definitely want to make a trek to see a show now. The last one I drove any distance for? Rilo Kiley.
Sounds like a great time. I haven’t been to a concert in ages but am going to one in the end of September that I am really excited about.
Omg. :) That song always makes me smile – so circa 16 years old, but still so good. :) Totally jealous that you saw them! What fun!!
this past spring I saw NFG and Saves the Day while on a trip out to Vegas. It was just a little House of Blues show, which made it all the better. So fun having all those memories flood back and how you can remember lyrics after so many years. :) I’m glad you had a fun little trip!!!
I haven’t listened to SoCo in so many years… Wow. I am a bit jealous you saw their first show. I’m just excited they are back together though.
Pilgrimage for a show, huh? I suppose I’ve done a few to New York City when I lived back home – only about a 2.5 hour drive. But the most memorable pilgrimage would be a simple Mest concert at a bar around three hours from the town I went to college in. I hadn’t seen them play live, and they were already replacing band members so I knew the end was near. I just HAD to go. I found three friends and we drove out. By the end of the show, several inches of snow piled up. I wasn’t worried ’til my car refused to travel a straight line. Chevy Cavaliers like to slide around in those kind of weather conditions, so we were forced into a hotel for the night. It was a fabulous trip!
How fun! I love the classics! I havent trucked it to a show in a while…actually I was supposed to see She & Him at the Hollywood Bowl & missed the show! Busy much?! I’m planning on going to a Sea Wolf show in San Diego soon though, should be a blast! (also saving for Coachella next year!)
I think the farthest I’ve ever gone was probably 2 hours? Haha that sounds lame I guess, since it’s not very far at all. I went to see Pearl Jam in Ottawa while I was living in my university town!
My farthest music-inspired trip was from Alabama to Boston for a Muse concert. It was so worth it–best concert I had ever seen. I’ve seen them twice since then and amazingly, they get better every time.
That’s the same type of music I used to listen to in High School. I get made fun of sometimes when a Bowling for Soup song comes on and I know all the words. Punk Rock Princess is a classic. I love it. I hope you had an awesome time at the concert though. :)
Your crochet is really pretty :D Unfortunately, I can’t say I’ve made pilgrimage to any shows. I’m am way not cool enough to actually use that term ;)
Completely off topic but… I love your nail varnish :D Very summer-y!!
I have to say, Something Corporate aren’t really heard of in England *gasp* but I’ll be sure to check their stuff out!! I’ve made plenty of pilgrimages to see bands – I think my last one was to London to see… and don’t even judge… Michael Bolton. *hangs head in shame* He gets me every time… ;)
So so so so jealous Kyla!! I love him. Haha.
i really love Something Corporate!! My husband and I did the same thing earlier this summer with one of our favorite bands, Truth and Salvage Co. We found tickets to a festival in Arkansas called Wakarusa where they were playing and just decided to make the trip last minute! It was so fun!
Truth and Salvage Co? Okay, I’m Googling them!
I just love a good road trip, it’s so much fun to feel like you made the extra effort to get out there.
Turns out a bunch of my co-workers went to the show!! One of my co-workers is goign to burn me a couple of CDs. Can’t wait to check them out.
I have actually NEVER traveled for a concert. Pretty pathetic, huh? I just wait for shows to come to Minneapolis…
It was AWESOME to meet you & jesse!! :)
That’s so funny that they were there too! I think your “wait, and they will come” tactic is awesome- because they do! Here it’s more like “Wait…. wait a little longer….. just one more year….” :)
It was amazing to meet you too, thank you so much for taking the time! I can’t wait for August!
I’ve never made a show pilgrimage, but I went to Jimmy Eat World’s 10th anniversary “Clarity” tour in February of 2009, & it was, hands down, one of the most moving experiences of my life. Like, really.
Music is magic.
Jimmy Eat World is the best ever! I saw them last year, and they are definitely magic.
Man, I’m weak at the knees just thinking about it! :)
I’ve actually never made a pilgrimage but I’m spoiled since I live close to NYC. I should do it!
Oh that would be so handy! Maybe I should just drive a little further & tag along?
Okay, a lot further lol :)
*So* jealous of you, Kyla! I <3 Something Corporate (and Arizona tea)!
We should have swung by and picked you up! ;)
Oh Punk Rock Princess. So amazing.
So funny & nostalgic. You should have seen these giant punk guys rocking out to it! It was like performance art….
I can’t remember if I ever road tripped for a show before. Honestly, I jealous that you were able to do it. Heck, I loved the fact that you did. Gosh, I miss road trips so much and just the randomness of going to a place for a few hours only to leave shortly after.
I think it’s probably a “little city” thing, it’s always fun to hit a bigger centre, and to feel like you’ve really made an effort to see a show. Being in Chicago, they’re all in your lap!
But if you haven’t done a summer road trip yet I would totally recommend it, even if it’s just to have lunch in a diner in a town you’ve never heard of. If nothing else it’s excellent VEDA material :)
eee, I bet it brought back so many memories. I tagged along with some friends who were on the same tour as them, maaaany many summers ago, so I saw them play a few times. I was never a big fan, but I knew some of their songs, and I’m guilty of letting them get stuck in my head.
This made me feel all sorts of nostalgic.
Tagging along with the band? That sounds like a good summer!
SoCo’s stuff is super poppy and fun, I think that had I not been in high school I might have had more refined taste…. but I didn’t so it was lots of fun so see them play! ;)
OHIMGOSH.
Jealousy.
ha! It was a really fun time :)
Looks like a great weekend! I’m glad you had such a good time :)
oh my goodness, i loved something corporate back in the day, so good to hear they’re playing together again!
And they were really pulled together too! Andrew was really cute, he said that he tucked in his shirt for us and everything.
Oh, singers….. :)
Omg my. Something Corporate was on my HS playlist too. Some of my fondest memories revolve around it.
Punk Rock Princess…Oh my. I think I need to make a new radio station on Pandora.com
They’re just one of those bands that I found at a time when everything was changing in my life, something about that sinks into you! I’m glad I’m not the only one :)
Ah yes! In 2005, Something Corporate was often on my playlists :)
I recently went to the Lilith Fair–and loved it!
Oh Lilith Fair! I remember that! I haven’t heard much about it in the past years, was there a good line up?
I just have to share that Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng always, ALWAYS reminds me of my college days, when I drank it all the time. I used to keep the pretty bottles and put flowers in them. If Arizona Tea ever changes the design on that bottle, I will cry.
OK, now I totally need to go buy one at lunch.
They’re so beautiful! I love the cherry blossoms. I’m so biased (that’s what my shoulder tattoo is!) but I still love them :)
I love road trips! Especially impromptu ones. And kudos to the mister for scoring those tickets last-minute!
I’ve made lots of music pilgrimages in my time, mostly thanks to so many tours skipping out on South Florida (or Florida altogether). There’s something about our little peninsula they like to avoid…
My first big pilgrimage was in 1997 when I was 14. My mom and aunt drove my best friend and I all the way up to NYC and Pennsylvania during the summer to see my favorite bands at the time: Bush, The Jesus Lizard, and the Souls. It was incredible. (Long story… I ran a Bush e-zine and got to know Bush’s guitarist through email, so he’d leave me tickets and backstage passes at will call, making that long trip more amazing!) And we made it a TWO WEEK road trip… it was the best! And yes, my parents rule. :D
My most recent one was back in 2007, when we drove a few hours north to Orlando for Warped Tour, solely because the vibe/people/atmosphere at the Orlando show is far superior to the Miami show. The short trip is so worth it. And it’s a great excuse for a little road trip.
Sorry for the long post–you’ve got me all reminiscent! And you’ve got me all itchy to get on the road… It’s been far too long!
Layne!! We were at the Orlando Warped Tour in 2007 too! lol A big part of Mister’s family lives in the Orlando area so we’re down there almost every year to visit them. We’re probably already seen each other in person! I love how small the world is :)
Oh my! Crazy isn’t it?! I love how the world works sometimes. :)
I think my only concert pilgrimage was to a Ben Folds concert (I actually think that was the last concert I’ve been to, which is reeeaaally sad because that was…like 5 years ago). We stood in line, in the rain for HOURS, even through a rain delay. Then missed our exit on the way back home. But I still remember it being an amazing time.
And, oh, Something Corporate. I can’t listen to them without feeling super nostalgic for my early college years. I remember hearing Konstantine for the first time and suddenly realizing that there was music that could speak directly to me.
Oh my goodness, Ben Folds in person? That would be worth a big drive, and even some rain too!
I’m glad I’m not the only nostalgic in the bunch when it comes to SoCo :)
There was one year DMB didn’t come to StL which was a huge tragedy in my opinion and so I went to Indianapolis to see him. It was about a four hour trip but with three of my good friends in the car, it didn’t seem like that at all. We talked guys, music, work, college and countless other things. It was a quick trip but was a lot of fun! Oh! And The Police! I went to Louisville KY to see them one year. SO MUCH FUN. My dad scored us seats like 10 rows back so I could see up their noses. They rocked the place too, of course.
That sounds like the perfect trip! Great friends & heart to hearts? I’m kind of hoping that’s what the end of August will be like for the four of us :)
And I still haven’t seen DMB live! That’s on my life list.
Ah…the Cabooze. You’re in my neck of the woods, that’s for certain. :)
I’m glad you had a fun time!
I can’t get over the name! I officially can’t open a bar now, because the best name is already taken :)
Amazing! I’m still slightly jealous.
I remember hearing SoCo for the first time. It was during a commercial break while watching Degrassi. I think I may have beeen in eighth or ninth grade (so around 2002-2003), and the video for “Space” came on. I loved that Andrew played piano AND had beautiful teeth. (I had a thing for teeth back then.) I immediately fell in love. I actually bought “North” before buying “Leaving Through the Window” (which I put back on my iPod recently), and I had other EPs and stuff, but those seem to be missing now.
I stopped listening to them for a while because they reminded me of a boyfriend I had from freshman to junior year in high school, but now that isn’t even important … So when I listen to them now, I think of all of the life-changing things that happened to me through those years. SoCo’s music got me through my granny’s sickness and death, so I love them for that.
Thanks for the reminder of an amazing band that I almost forgot!
I really loved North, but Mister was an Audioboxer & Ready… Break! guy :)
Neither of us had listened to them in forever, but it was really cool to see them in person. And they played Konstantine! Be still my heart… :)
You know what? I don’t remember ever making a pilgrimage to a show! It looks like so much fun though, maybe I should add that to the to-do list. I’ve never heard of Something Corporate either, I should check them out!
I’d definitely recommend it- it’s a real treat! It makes it feel a little more special.
If you’re looking to listen to SoCo this is a good introduction :)
