Simple Happy
After a summer of living lean as a result of being a one income house, I’ve been trying to keep the spirit of minimalism going now that I’m back to being gainfully employed. So here are a few things that have made me very happy lately, for very little money, that you might like to try…
Loose Black Tea {cost: $7 per 1/4 pound of Assam}
There is something so homey and indulgent about loose tea for me. My mom always had a pot of tea on in our home when I was growing up, and coming in from the shocking cold, leaving your hat on the radiator to warm up and grabbing a mug of tea was the best thing to melt the frost from your eyelashes. It tend to have a thermos around in the evenings so Mister & I can help ourselves.
S’mores made with Vegan Marshmallows {cost: $4 per metric tonne}
I stopped eating meat when I was five or six years old (that’s a whole post in its self) but being vegetarian means that some things treats, especially ones containing gelatin, have been off my radar for 18 years now. This month my local Organic Mega Mart started stocking vegan marshmallows, and I nearly leaped off the bus when I saw the sign. Mister drove me down, we bought chocolate and graham crackers and made s’mores in our toaster oven. They tasted exactly like I remember and I’ve been having them every night since. Home made s’mores are decidedly brilliant- put assembled s’mores on a baking sheet in a 350 degree oven for 3-5 mins for perfect camp fire effect.
The Library {cost: $0}
Ever since the library in our city had a massive renovation that turned it into something of a marvel, I had an epiphany about the library: it exists! And it’s free! Libraries are something we tend to take for granted but every time I receive an e-mail reminder that a huge hardcover retrospective on french fashion, architecture, or american city history is in for me I get giddy. And the best thing is you can usually renew them online so you can really take your time if you need to.
Finding a work schedule that works {cost: 8 hours a day}
After having not worked, having a job is an incredible thing. I feel so lucky to have somewhere to hang out during the day, and so glad to have something meaningful to do all day, even if that’s paperwork. Even better is that I’m working part time for the first time since I was 18 and having two week days to just study is amazing. I’m never exhausted, and our pocketbooks are breaking even again. It’s a unique arrangement but I’m really enjoying the flexibility.
Television {cost: $40 a month}
Last year Mister and I gave TV a proper go, and I’ve become addicted to a number of shows- Good Eats, Fringe, Castle and Dollhouse in particular. I love having designated time to stop and cuddle in the evenings, and I can’t wait to start up again with these. As long as I don’t get hooked on reality TV I think about 3 hours a week is still pretty healthy.
Seasonal Cooking {cost: depends on the wine you have with it}
I just bought Earth To Table: Seasonal Recipes from an organic farm {cost $23} and I can’t stop reading it! The book is divided up by season, contains stories about running an organic farm and then a section of recipes for each season, as well as amazing basics for year round. I’ve already had a few days when the smell of fire wafts into the city as the farmers burn the stubble on their fields, and there’s nothing that says fall to me more than that. I kind of can’t wait to dig into this!
Losing the soundtrack {cost: $0}
Most of the time that I’m out in public I’m on the phone, listening to music, or scrolling through twitter updates- but taking the time to just experience a commute on public transport, the sounds outside your office building at lunch, or the background noise of your coffee shop is an experiment in its self. Every place has its own sounds and rhythm that are just as interesting and absorbing as the new Radiolab podcast. Listening to the places you pass through every day can be a pretty zen experience if you try it here and there, and you never know what can happen when you unplug- you might even fall into a conversation.
What’s your best simple happy suggestion?

My Best Simple Happy Suggestion? EASY. Nutella crepes. Cost… I don’t know. Let’s say 7 euros, or 10 dollars, will make you about 20 crepes. With the nutella in it. Yummy. And it makes me feel as if I can actually COOK something ;)

These make me smile :) So many things cost so little yet make you happier. This reminds me how I never stop to listen I just have ipod in my ears and on the deck when i’m in the car.
ps. s’mores are so yummy. I crave one badly right now.
Tap into your crafty side… I learned to crochet recently and plan on making all of my Christmas gifts this year. It’s amazing how free and fun it is to use your imagination. I even sewed a bookmark for a friend and it felt wonderful to give a “I love you” handmade gift! It was all free. I had all the stuff around the house. ♥

This post makes me so happy for you. I love finding and taking absolute pleasure in the little things. Turning off the tv, taking my earphones out and just listening to all the sounds around me is divine.

Simple and happy things make life worth living. I love sipping my coffee, reading blogs, and even cleaning (i find cleaning and decluttering cathartic – i’m crazy).

Love the library. I moved a year ago to a city with an excellent library system and I’ve bought maybe one book since.

My simple pleasure is laughter. The best advice my father ever gave me was to find something to laugh about every day. Have you ever seen Dig? Toward the end Courtney Taylor says, “When its good, its fun. And when its bad, its funny.” That is my philosophy. It makes me happy.

Girl – I’m the biggest marshmallow fan in the world. I can only imagine how happy you’d be to rediscover them after that long of a hiatus!

I just tweeted about the marshmallow test – you should check that out.
Living a simple life is such a natural high of happiness! The husband and I are looking into ways to cut back on money and it’s working out well so far.

Kyla,
This post makes me giddily happy. Those marshmallows look delish. Also, I just love the idea of making a list of the simple things in life – sometimes the best things are free (or close to it)!
xo.

I so need this cookbook. Also, I really wish the libraries here didn’t cut their hours so much to save money. It’s ridiculous.
And I so badly want to make marshmallows!

Wow vegan marshmallows sound actually pretty good. I’m curious! my favorite thing is laying on the couch reading magazines with a soda. Really it’s not that exciting.

I think people are starting to realize the beauty of the local library, I’ve been wanting to get back there myself.
i wish i could only watch 3 hours of tv, i am way to addicted, haha. but at least i balance it out with lots of reading, the library is definitely one of my good friends these days.

These are great!
Some of my favourites are: taking a walk in our neighbourhood “Saturday-style” (all slow and rambly-like) with my partner (free!); reading blogs like this one and APracticalWedding.com (either free or ~€20/hour, depending on whether I have freelance work I should be doing); daily cuddle/catch-up time with my partner; baking, especially cakes (~€5 for ingredients); alternating between Losing the Soundtrack and plugging in and hitting random on my iPod, depending on the day (free!); etc.
There are lots more, but these are the only ones I can think of right now… besides, I have to get back to work! ;)
Thanks for the great upbeat post!
Your blog makes me contented sigh in a “i’m slightly jealous” way.
Seriously, I know it’s ridiculous to think that anyone’s life is perfect but yours definitely has scenes out of a storybook. I mean that in the best way possible, I wish I could travel to the prairie and spend a day in your fabulous old house and drink some loose tea with you. :-)
I’m also insanely interested in that book, I’d love to cook a little more seasonally. I always make sure my summers are full of berries, and my winters full of oranges, but beside that I’m a little clueless. I’ll definitely be on the look out for that one.
Also, (I’m sorry I’m writing a book in your comments) what sort of Pod casts do you like, I have yet to ever listen to one, but I’d love to have more interesting things on my ipod than my same few cds.

I wish the library was free for me! We live in an unincorporated part of town which means we don’t pay property taxes to the library. Either I have to pay close to $350 for a library card (what I would pay in taxes, if I had to pay them) or go without. Hasn’t stopped me from volunteering there, though … who doesn’t love a library?!?!
Hmmmm…
one of my favorite things in the world is a really excellent piece of bread with melted butter. I know, I know, so not healthy but man is it yummy.
Lately I’ve been enjoying a lot of walks down memory lane: old yearbooks, papers from high school & college that I’ve saved, letters and cards from friends and family over the years. It’s amazing how sucked in one can be when they start looking at things like this. Cost is little (now) though I know the yearbooks cost a fair amount back in the day.
Also, Irish & I have been taking longer walks with Jack, sans the cell phones, and it’s been really great to do what you suggest: listen to the soundtrack around you!
I’m definitely going to have to go get some loose tea soon. I’m all out and I miss it!

I thought of you the other day when I entered the door to this tea place on West 4th called “David’s Tea.” The big sign on the window said “Tea is Back!” and apparently this shop looks like it is set to go head to head with Starbucks. Anyways the experience was entirely invigorating and delicious from the get. After looking at their selection of 40 organic teas tinned on the wall, I chose “green seduction” and believe you me was swept off my feet. In other words, tea is a very good thing.
About the library, for me the cost is always wavering somewhere between $10 and $20. I have a problem with due dates.

Cooking makes me very happy. For about $10 I can buy all the ingredients for a lovely vegetable / bean / pasta soup. Chopping and stirring (and tasting!) for a few hours is a nice stress-reliever for me.

VEGAN MARSHMELLOWS?! girl, i think you just made my life. now, i’m off to scour the internets for these little gifts from above. :)
this was such a good post about the simple things in life… it doesn’t have to cost a ton of money to be happy. :)

I had a similar epiphany about the library yesterday!
The most wonderful moment came when Mike (husband) finally found a section he was excited about. He brought three HUGE books back to our table, then left to ask how many he could check out at once. The nice lady at the help desk laughed and told him, “as many as you can carry.”
That’s when we both realized, WHOA…this is awesome.

I’m actually planning to blog about three of my simple, happy things like this this week. Mine are beading, baking and board games. With fall coming on, I’ve finally been able to slow down and take the time to enjoy being creative with food and jewelry, and the cooler evenings are perfect for muscling people into playing Hoopla or Scattergories with me.

I know its a homebody cliche.. but I’ve started writing letters. On nice paper, with sweet stamps and matching envelopes. We gave up tv for the new house and I’m not regretting it one bit. We listen to more podcasts, take out more movies and documentaries from the library (I’ve already got 2 PBS documentaries on the go!).. and somehow, the silence seems very wealthy and luxurious, even if the reason for it is not. xo

Mmm s’mores sound SO good right now.
Simple happy for me is walking where we might have driven or taken the bus before; waking up early to enjoy a long morning; holding my new niece; and daydreaming.
