Sew Cute!
I’ve had a sewing machine for forever- a beast of a thing that was freecycled to me, but that has been on it’s last legs for a long time. This spring I finally broke down and replaced it with a new machine & had every intention of taking lessons so I could freshen up on my basics. I looked around my city, but I was having trouble finding a sewing class where I would feel at home & like I wasn’t being rushed through projects I wouldn’t make on my own.
And then Leigh-Ann, Courtney & Rachel announced their Home Ec e-course, and my heart kind of skipped a beat. If you haven’t found it online yet, I’ve come up with an illustration that expresses my understanding of it:
I’m really excited to take it – I think it’s the best of both worlds. You learn everything from how to use your machine to new techniques in every project, but you work completely at your own pace, and can make friends with your classmates who are learning to sew. And you can ask questions of your teaches in the live chat sessions! And make beautiful things!
I’m most looking forward to the sessions on how to read patterns & invent projects of your own. I think that if I can master the round bunting project, the secrets of the universe may just start unfolding on their own, you know? :)
Check out the full details & project previews here or e-mail LA if you have questions
How exciting! I’ve wanted to relearn how to sew for a long time now and I think I’m going to just DO IT finally. I need to figure out what’s the best sewing machine to buy that I won’t outgrow quickly but won’t be so intense for a newbie—last time at a machine was 8th grade. ;)
I have so many pillow cases to make, it’s not even funny. Also, I may start doing some rad reproductions of Christmas cards and ornaments my grandmother made back in the day…pretty excited!
Reproductions? That sounds amazing! I think I need to see those results :)
I can’t wait!
this sounds like a great idea! i never have time to get to a class but i might look into this. you’ll have to post pictures of the beautiful things you’ll surely create!
Home ec might have been a useful class but they never offered it. That is ‘sew cute’ indeed though. :)
I think I visit the Home-Ec page every day debating whether I should sign up for it or not. My problem: I’m having a baby right in the middle of the class – but on the other hand they ARE leaving the blog up for a year and it would be great to meet some like-minded sewers. STILL SO TORN!
I think that miiiight cross into taking too much on territory, lady :)
My mom is this crazy talented sewer, but that gene skipped me. Sometimes I think I would really like to learn but that feelings passes quickly. I can’t wait to see what you whip up.
Ah, I love your illustration. So much.
I’ve never felt the itch to sew. My grandma tried to teach me once but it was one big fail.
But good luck to you and everyone who is doing this class! It sounds like it’ll be an amazing experience.
did you know i am taking it too?
another class from LA that we are taking together! haha
This sounds so cool! Do they have anything like this for knitting or crochet? I want so badly to be crafty, but I can only get so far with self-teaching. Something like this would be really cool!
I haven’t heard of anything like that for knitting or crochet, but maybe in the future? :) Are you on ravelry? I’ve heard it’s a great place to start if you’re looking for more help & community.
this sounds like an amazing class! it’s affordable and it would be a convenient way to learn. if i had more time on my hands, i would definitely give it a whirl (i’d love to learn how to make my own dresses).
sounds like the beast of a machine that was handed down to me…that sits in our guest room gathering dust because i have no idea (or time!!) how to use it. what a fun idea this is – can’t wait to see what you end up making :)
I kindof can’t wait to see your creations when you’re done! I’m glad you found something you’re comfortable with :)
Soooo….
Does this mean that next spring, we can expect to see you engaging in a “Six Months, Six Handmade Dresses” challenge?
Oh come on! You know you want to!
LOL Um…. D, I love you, but no. I think the results would be entirely too “prairie”. In the bad way. :)
I wish I could sew.. What a great skill to have. I think about learning but it never seems to happen.
I’m a new visitor here–hi!
This class sounds so so great–I’m just like you in that I have an old-ish freecycled machine that I can use but not perfectly. The budget doesn’t allow for this class right now (sigh), but I hope you’ll keep us updated on how it goes for you!
ps What type of sewing machine is your new one? I’m looking into getting a new one myself and am feeling a little overwhelmed by the options.
I don’t need to sew a lot so I bought the most basic Brother sewing machine that I could find. When I was looking into what to purchase, I went to the store that I was going to be buying from & wrote down the model numbers of the machines so I could do a little research before hand. Amazon user comments are a great place to start :)
So fun! I have, unfortunately, never been to adept at sewing. Much to my grandmothers dismay. She is an amazing sewer, knitter, crocheter, everything-er and has tried to pass on her craft many times but I just can’t get the hang of it!
I wish I had a sewing machine so that I could take this class. And, I also wish I had somewhere to put a sewing machine. If I bring anymore craft items into the house, I feel confident my roomie will kill me in my sleep
Well, that’s fun! The internet is so amazing… My mom is coming to visit in a couple of weeks, and one of her jobs is to help me pick out a sewing machine and teach me the basics while she’s here. We’ll see if the two of us come out of this alive!
I hope they offer this again! I’m a little bogged down with projects right now, but how fun is this!? I love the graphics you created and of course, once again, the internet rocks.
I can’t wait to start this class!! And I’m so excited that you’re taking it too, so we can work through the tough stuff together!!
We definitely can! :)
Sounds like fun! I’m so intimidated by sewing. If I had a machine I might sign up :)
How exciting! Can’t wait to see what you create! :)
My mom tried to teach me to sew when I was a child. Epic fail. I hated every minute of it. now that I am an adult, I would like the chance to learn again…
Oh I think this is so great too! I literally just signed up this morning, and couldn’t be more excited for it to start!
No way! Classmates! :)
What a great idea! I am going to look into this! I’ve been quilting, but I’d still like to learn more sewing skills too!
Agreed. After the wonderful indie biz class, I couldn’t pass this one up.
LA puts her classes together so well! They’re a real treat.
I signed up too & I can’t wait to get started. I’ve always told myself that I’m not “crafty” but I seem to have forgotten that I was a Studio Art minor in college and I used to paint, draw, and do pottery on a daily basis. I hope that this class sparks that part of me again:) xo
So excited for this! I signed up for the class a few days ago, and I really can’t wait to learn to sew. I’m going shopping for fabric tomorrow, hopefully!
