A September Creative Retreat
September went by in a blur, and without blogging I missed writing, photography & sharing everything so much! It was fun to stay connected on twitter but tiny updates aren’t as satisfying as posting about the big picture, so this is what my September looked like…
Taking a break from blogging gave me back lots of time everyday to work on client projects and work ahead on whatever I needed to. The weather was mostly gorgeous and warm, so I started walking to work while I still could. Because Jesse took some holiday time we got a chance to walk in together with the little dogs on the first day when there was just a little chill in the air. It was luxurious to take our time and sip coffee while walking through the city to the studio.
The only problem that followed?
Honestly, I get sick so easily!! I swear, if I lived in the Victorian times I wouldn’t have made it past childhood.
Thankfully I got into the doctor quickly, but only after a week of having no idea what was going on & why I couldn’t stop napping for hours on end! There’s nothing like having to take care of yourself to help you remember how to treat your body well and I’ve learned my lesson. The fun part about being sick was that my puppies wouldn’t leave me alone- all they wanted to do was cuddle me. Far be it from me to deprive them of their emotional needs :)
After about ten days I started feeling like myself again and got to start having a little fun again. Jesse and I celebrated our third wedding anniversary, work became so much more fun with all of my energy back, and Amber & I started going to concerts and having TV marathon nights together every week. It’s been really fun & balanced, and left me super charged with inspiration!
One of the highlights of September has been really lovely things arriving through the month. With Amber joining Freckled Nest we needed to get a desk for her, and when her teal desk arrived fit perfectly into our studio space. Not to mention that it matched Amber’s glasses perfectly! I think it was fated. I also ordered a set of beautiful plugs that I had so much trouble waiting for. After what seemed like forever they arrived just last week and are so gorgeous! One pair is gemstone- white and pearly, and one pair is black with white lace. They’re still a little too big for me, but I can’t wait until I can wear them. I also ordered a beautiful ring from Pretty Zoo that I can’t wait to see- having little things to look forward to is such a nice feeling :)
I didn’t mean for it to happen, but September was like a creative retreat. I had lots of time to rest and explore new inspiration, I had time dive into my favourite blogs and explore lots of new ones, and got to catch up with friends. Balance between work & life can be really hard to keep a hold of, especially when you’re the person who sets your hours, but I know I’m on the right track- and not only am I on the right track, I can stay on it.
How was your September?
Fill me in on what I missed!
oh gosh, it’s always the way right? finally give yourself some chill time and the body all of a sudden signals some sort of “up periscope” alarm to blast a sick bomb all over it. ah well, seems it didn’t take you down for that long and you got in SO many amazing things. spending time with loved ones without having that many deadlines in the back of your mind must have been a truly wondrous thing.
congrats to you both on your 3rd year of bliss!!! Amber’s new desk is ace, such a rad score gals and those lace plugs are really cool too. never seen ones like that before, leave it to you to source something pretty slick, nice one! having that sort of balance achieved is the thing i’m working towards now too. Sept was off the charts busy for me, lots of work and not much play time. the boyf is feeling slightly dusted, perhaps a break would be a good thing to do. thanks for sharing your results from it, inspired total!
Aw, good luck on getting more balanced, Lynn! If you’re looking for plugs, the company I got them from is called BMA Modified and their prices are *super* reasonable- definitely worth browsing! :)
Well it was my and my boyfriend’s birthdays this month. I was sick too, and I can’t manage to ever get rid of a cold, so I still feel horrible.
I worked like a maniac on a project for school. Its part of my thesis. I’m looking for submissions too, and I think you’d be great Kyla. Let me know what you think. http://www.thestorybehindthestatus.com
That sounds like a really cool project, Erin! I can’t wait to explore it- thank you for the link :)
I get sick way too easily, too. I don’t think I would have made it far in Victorian times either. ;) Ha. So glad to see you’re back and had an inspired time away.
I missed your posts, Kyla! Welcome back. :)
I love your collection of Wes Anderson dvd’s – those are perfect for sick days. Or any other, really.
My September was a little crazy – a fun trip to Chicago, and then a few days later, an emergency tri pto my hometown to see a family member in the hospital. I didn’t blog much, have to play catchup.
Welcome back to blogland, and have a wonderful October!
What a pretty post & I’m so glad you’re back to blogging, I missed reading!! (I love the “Back to myself” text!!!)
xo :)
I can’t believe September is over personally! So sad to see summer disappear. I LOVE those plugs, by the way! I’m so glad you’re back to blogging/designing and things :)
It’s good to have you back! – So weird, though, as a few of my favourite bloggers took a break from blogging (or didn’t blog as frequently) during September and went back to it now. That kind of left me feeling less inspired too, but now that I know that you and everyone else is back in the blogosphere, I get so many new ideas and started so many new projects too. I’ve been very busy at work during September (I’m a pastry chef and we had many many wedding cakes to make last month) but now I’m literally bursting of creativity again.
Ugh, bronchitis is nasty – I tried to soldier on through it once and ended up off work sick for over a month. Glad to have you back!
So glad you’re back!
My September was great – lots of birthday celebrations and time appreciating small things, and re-realizing (is that a word?) how there are so many “milestones” and “big things” in life that I just don’t care about. As long as I can have a place to come home to with my husband and I have a good book, life is pretty good indeed.
I’m happy to see you’re back! September sounds like it was a nice little vacation from the blog, despite being sick. I am the same way, and usually am sick from October to July! I think I need to take my vitamins!
I was in my brother’s wedding, got back into blogging after a little hiatus, and started some new features, including a new weekly cocktail recipe.
Sounds like you have a relaxing month (besides being sick) I just love when my puppy knows when I need extra cuddle time.
Kyla – So glad to have you back! What did you miss? Well, I was super excited to discover that I was Blogger’s Blog of Note last month. I did a couple blog designs, joined 30 Days of Lists and did some drawings for it. I was sick too! Boo!
Congratulations on being the blog of note, that’s awesome! :)
Septemeber…what september?? Man the month flew by! Looks like your blogging break was good to you. Glad you’re back!
I took a blogging break too, over the summer whilst I finished writing my Master’s thesis. It was actually really refreshing and I came back to my online world feeling refreshed and inspired.
I get sick so easily, too! I just got finished reading Wuthering Heights and thought the same thing…I definitely wouldn’t have made it a week in Victorian England. I’m glad you’re feeling better!
