On this brink of spring…
The past few weeks have been evaporating underneath me faster than I can express, so much has been happening that I haven’t had time to blog about some things I really want to share! I can’t wait to set some time aside soon to take all the photos I need to show you :) In the mean time I thought a little photo list update would be fun, so this is what I’ve been up to on this brink of spring…
edit: click on photos to view source :)
Wearing my little leather jacket on warm days & feeling so excited for the weather to change…
Loving the sweet moments in daily life, especially the ones that include Nutella crepes!
Adoring my new Mannequin nail polish (almost a little too much)…
Planning crochet and knitting projects for before the weather changes…
Having the most incredibly vivid dreams that sweep me away to the distant past every night…
Working on making my body opt-in to daylight savings…
Intending to eat healthy while Jesse’s out of town and then eating pizza for dinner instead!
(the fact that it’s “stolen pizza” that I shouldn’t be having just makes it taste better!)
What have you been up to this almost spring?
You are so beautiful, you took my breath away!
Kyla, that doily is gorgeous. Are you making something similar? It’s making me want to learn how to crochet!
Just FYI… Using “via” without the artists name does nothing for their seo. It’s better karma to use their name as google indexes the words in the link. :)
Also, as a photographer who’s work is used online in other blogs a fair amount I appreciate a full link (not “via” or “here” or “source”) with my name or my busines’ name either directly under the image or in a link list at the bottom. I think this issue is getting a bit blown up, but at the core of it it’s just about crediting content. Images draw readers back to blogs so you are benefitting from the work of others in traffic, and money if you charge for ads as your advertisers pay based on your traffic. . To not credit them is like using them. You wouldn’t like it if someone stole a paragraph from you without quoting or linking back. So it’s really just about being kind and fair. :)
Xo,
B
Hey Becka, thanks for your thoughts! The only time I use a via without crediting both the source and artist in writing is when I have a link in another place- because I’ve been linking the photos themselves it was just a shorthand that I made up for these posts. I’ve been wanting to pick a firm way of crediting that I feel confident in, and it seems like the consensus is just text links. Done! :)
As far as SEO goes though, is that true? Search engine crawlers are fairly indiscriminate, I would be surprised if the would read the text that a link displays to the public but not the text in the link. If I’m linking a photo as well as separately linking to the source I found it through, both websites would get a tiny bump in SEO status, one wouldn’t override the other. That’s how I understand it at least- do you have an SEO for photographers resource you trust? I’m totally fascinated by this stuff and I love learning about it! And if there’s anything I can do in how I credit sources that helps get more eyes on beautiful work? I’m geeky enough to be really excited about that! :)
Kyla,
I’ll have to look and see if I can find it. I took a seminar not just for photographers but just on blogging, seo, analytics, marketing, etc about two years ago and that’s where I learned that you should always write out the link. Same on blogs. For example it’s not good SEO to write “Click here” and make “here” a link. You should write what it is actually for like “Click for our Kyla Roma advertising rates” and have that last phrase be the link.
I’ll see if I can find my notes. :)
Okay, I woke up at 2 AM and realized what you meant! If you write out the name of the photographer and have a link to them that’s 2 times the search engine picks up their name, where as with a photo link or text link that doesn’t say their name it’s just one time. Proof that I’ve been over tired! :)
That’s really interesting- I’ve never thought about approaching linking in posts from an SEO perspective, always just from an authorship one. I think the main time I think about it the other way is when I get spam e-mails from faceless marketers asking if I want to do a link exchange ;)
Adjusting to daylight savings has been tough! The extra sunshine is helping though! As for giving credit, I like that the photos link but I also think it is nice to have written credit at the bottom of a post or underneath the image. I think it is just preferences. As long as you are giving credit in a way that people can understand which image it applies to I don’t see a problem.
Please credit the photographer when making post. Its called blogging etiquette. Photographer’s especially need to be credited every-time. Rude!
I always appreciate constructive criticism, but I wish you would have left a real e-mail address so we could have a conversation! If you would have taken a little more time on my site you would see that rather than in post text links, all the photographs link through to their original sources and all are sourced from individual artists where authorship isn’t a question. I just posted about this issue last week and I’ve been following the community discussion closely.
I would love to hear what you guys would like to see in image crediting! I used to list links at the bottom of the post and not link the photos- but I feel like this is a stronger way to point people toward a work’s sources. Do you guys think that without in text links under the photos, credit isn’t being properly given?
Sometimes I’ll use “(via)” and only link that, not even giving a name… but the fact that I can mouse-over the images here and see where they’re from… I think you’re fine. :) It’s more than a lot of people do.
Oh, I like that even better, just “via”. Not as wordy as what I sometimes use. And Erini is right, most people don’t link anything at all!
That’s unfortunate someone has the nerve to post a comment like that but doesn’t have the cajones to leave a working email address!
Personally I prefer to have the image linked back to the original source. On WP if I try to link the original source website in the caption the website address won’t work and just looks bad. If I only have one image in the entire post, and it’s not mine, and I like the photo back to the original post then I will state, “Click image for source” or something. But in this case, with multiples, I would maybe just put a small blurb at the beginning somewhere that to view all sources click on the image so it makes everyone happy?
Personally I think if someone was patient they would have figured that out anyway so you have nothing to worry about I think. You aren’t committing a “blogging etiquette” foul and you are not claiming them as your own.
Kyla, I think you’ve handled this issue beautifully. I agree that crediting images is essential, and I think the way that you’ve set the images up to link back to the original source is just fine. However, maybe it’s worth noting somewhere at the end of the post or on your sidebar that all images link to the original sources? Since linking the image directly isn’t as common as putting up a text link (at least as far as I have noticed on other blogs) I don’t think everyone is aware that this is even an option. However, I wouldn’t change what you’re doing – if people want to click the photos to see them larger, they’re taken right to the source which is great for the photographer. :)
I agree with Lesley Myrick. I hardly ever mouse-over photos in blogs, so there didn’t appear to be any attribution at all. As a journalist, we’re trained to always provide a photo credit and a cutline for every photo when published on our blogs or in the newspaper. However, I feel like there needs to be some kind of written disclaimer or notice at the bottom of the blog or even under the photo about the work’s original source..
Thanks so much for your thoughts! I’ve been mulling over how to credit on my blog going forward all week, but your journalist cred solidifies it- text links are the way to go! ;)
I’ve been painting my nails like crazy too!
American Apparel has some awesome colors, and I’ve been doing it up in Office and L’Esprit :)
Nutella looks amazing. I wish I had some right now. I love the motorcycle jacket too!!
Pizza? Is totally healthy! Cheese = dairy, crust = grain and veggies = well, veggies! That’s three food groups in one go! =)
I adore your posts. The balance of words and visuals always leaves me slightly breathless.
Yesterday, the sun was shining bright. So, Sweets and I took Gavin and the dog out on a long walk. It was Gavin’s first walk in his stroller and he did great. I want to lather, rinse, repeat the rest of the week!!!
YUM! Nutella crepes are the greatest!
Since it’s coming into fall here, i’m planning on learning how to crochet, wearing all my spring/summer dresses with lots of layers to stay warm & cooking more stews & soups :)
x
Leather jacket, check! Crochet projects, check! Still not on daylight savings time, check! Days flying past much too quickly, check! lol. I’m now craving a nutella crepe, though – it’s been a while!! Om nom. :)
i wore my leather jacket for the first time today, and it definitely put a spring in my step! :)
Oh this post made me quite hungry! Love the photos.
Yum…pizza! I could it every day. Yours looks particularly yummy!
I haven’t been working on ANYTHING (insert big pout here)..but i am dreaming about baking scores of cupcakes in an attempt to find the most delicious recipe & treat my fabulous co-workers to yummy treats at the same time :)
“moments have been evaporating underneath me”
yep! that about explains it- well said!
I love the fresh, breezy feeling of almost-spring. Bring it on!
xo

Mmm…. Nutella crepes. Is there anything better than that? Yum!
I don’t love the time change, but I do love the extra hour of sunshine in the evening. The day feels light and more airy when i leave work – if that makes any sense? And it was 51 today – so like 10C. It was glorious!
I cannot express to you how much I adore Nutella. So tasty, and I am sitting here wondering why I hove none in my apartment right now…
Either way, I have been eating SUPER healthy this week and I notice a change. I feel more rested and awake and energetic. I am taking a nutrition class that’s teaching me what to stay away from, and it’s definitely helping! But that pizza sure looks divine…
And, I have grown to love the time change, even if we lost an hour. I adore waking up when it’s dark and enjoying the extra time of light at night.
:)
That pizza… Oh my, I am dying to have some!
I’ve been having some crazy vivid dreams too! It makes me want to live in dream land forever.
And I’ve also been eating loads of nutella, but that’s every season :)

That pizza looks fantastic. Also, this seems like a crime considering how many people I know who love it, but I’ve never actually tasted nutella. My mom happens to be one of those who doesn’t love it though so I think that’s why I’ve put it off. Perhaps I need to venture out and try some. Also, good luck on your crochet projects, I’m working on a blanket and your post is helping give me the push I need to finish it up.
I am swooning over my little man fetus <3
Ahh! Nutella = best stuff on this earth! I eat it straight out of the jar with nothing but just the nutella. haha! So good. =) xo.
I’ve been having really vivid dreams lately too. I still can’t get over that we dreamed about each OTHER on the same night!!
I can’t wait for spring to be over (it’s my least favourite season) so I can stop getting brown slush splashed all over my trousers walking down Osborne, lol – but I’m very much enjoying lots of new music and warm temperatures lately :)
I’ve been slowly but surely replaced my thick sweaters with cardigans over short-sleeved tops, started making plans for the spring with my family, friends and Knight, vowed to get a few projects done in the next few weeks, and slept more than I thought possible (thanks to the springtime cold + adjusting to daylight savings as well).
Love this list and can’t wait to see what you have to share with us!
Yay for stolen pizza. For me, its usually a stolen ice cream in the mid-afternoon. It satisfies that pesky sweet tooth and for a few moments makes me think of warmer, sunnier weather.
it is truly reassuring to hear someone say that Spring is near, this is my first Winnipeg Winter and it was / is much longer than what I had prepared myself for
what a lovely post! and what a delicious looking pizza
I’ve been breaking out my skirts and dresses, and basking in the sun! Getting excited about life in general, and trying to take more risks, even if they are small!
yummmm….nutella. my favorite coffee shop makes a sandwich with two peanut butter cookies and nutella in the middle. it’s incredibly rich…and oh so very good! this spring i’m so full of new ideas! right now, today, i’m really excited about restarting a yoga practice. i found a great online source to supplement going to class…perfect!
I wish I liked Nutella – people seem to adore it, but I just can’t get into the taste!
You know what, I know a few people who say they can taste the hazelnut in it too strongly! I’m lucky that I was introduced to it early enough to just think I was eating pure chocolate & that association has stayed ;)
Do you make your own crepes? If so, please tell us how you do it!
beautiful post, I am learning to sew! I’m excited at all the possibilities, and a friend of mine signed me up for the home ec class, and even bought me a sewing machine!! She believes in me.. love her! For me, it’s very exciting… and yes, I’m slowly starting a fabric collection!
