You’d Never Guess
Happy almost Friday the 13th! Inspired by Mandy & some tweets we exchanged a while ago, here are a few things you might not have guessed about me:
1. I’ve never had a guy introduce himself & offer to buy me a drink. Does that happen in real life? I stopped going to the bar a while ago, but you would think that would happen once in a girl’s life.
2. I went to an all girls, uniformed, full on private high school. It was really intense in all the ways you think it would be.
3. I’m a politics major. You might not know from reading my blog, but you would if you talked to me. I can be incredibly analytical. I don’t know how my friends deal with it. I like to break things down, consider the source and the context, and then examine an issue them from all sides. It was demanded of me for three years & now it’s engrained. Or that’s my excuse, at least.
4. I’ve seen Almost Famous about fifty thousand times.
5. I’m always vaguely aware that I’m coming across all wrong. I’m over eager, I say the wrong things, I’m too strong, too loud, and then too quiet. Reading old e-mails and blogs always kind of astonishes me… and yet you all seem to have a very good handle on who I am. It begs the question: am I really just that awkward?
6. We didn’t have cable TV at my mom’s house until I was in my early teens. I was always pretty sure it was child abuse.
7. In spite of rigorous schooling, I speak no French and am terrible at arithmetic. Under the correct amount of pressure, basic mental math can reduce me to tears. It’s beyond sad. As is my only being able to speak in the French present tense, which I maintain is only a reflection of my very admirable and zen desire to stay in the moment.
8. I use a wacom tablet instead of a mouse. Buy your own for $50 and bring it to your work, it will give you instant tech street cred that you cannot fathom.
9. I have strong feelings about a lot of things that don’t make any impact on day to day life. Prime examples: advertising in personal blogs, the monarchy, the price of down filled jackets, how my feedburner subscription stats are reported in google reader, people telling other people how to raise their children and Kevin Smith. I could easily post every day, but I figure who really cares? It’s very Canadian of me.
10. I’ve never been to Toronto. I actually haven’t seen a lot of Canada! I’ve driven from Manitoba to Vancouver, and have been to Montreal, Quebec City (this would be my heaven if I could communicate with anyone there) but I tap out there. I really need to head east to explore some time.
What’s something I wouldn’t guess about you?

Number seven warms my heart. “As is my only being able to speak in the French present tense, which I maintain is only a reflection of my very admirable and zen desire to stay in the moment.” This sentence alone could be the soundtrack of my day.
I certainly found some of those quite interesting, and unexpected. It’s always nice to learn something different about another person. And considering my blogging rut lately, I think I might do this myself… (I hope you don’t mind!)
.-= MinD´s last blog ..He’s heeeeeeere! =-.
I am exactly with you on #4 and #6!
Something most people do not know about me… hrm. My emphasis as an English major in college was Jewish literature, but I’m not Jewish. I did consider converting because I found it so interesting and appropriate.
Almost Famous is one of the only movies I’ve ever craved. As in, there’s been moments when I absolutely had to put in the DVD player or else the world would have imploded.
.-= terra´s last blog ..An ethical dilemma (or, trusting the internets to give me answers) =-.
I don’t know…I’m going to have to think about this one, I always feel like such an open book. Hmm…perhaps my own blog post is coming on… ;)
.-= Alexis´s last blog ..Breaking the Pain Scale =-.
I’ve never even heard of a wacom tablet! Thanks for the info … gosh you have such tech street cred. ;)
And I’m with EP… I don’t think you’re awkward at all. We’re all our own biggest critics…
I think we all have a little bit of #9, but I love your examples :)
#1 DOES happen in real life, but it’s almost never as romantic/cute as you’d think… more often than not (at least in my experience) it’s more creepy than anything.
A lot of people are surprised when they find out I was a cheerleader in high school. I guess I don’t fit the stereotype.
We only had antenna tv at my parents house until after I moved out – we were too far in the country for cable!
And the Toronto 20SB-ers would be happy to have you here!
.-= Erin´s last blog ..Unfair =-.
Wow, from scanning the comments not many people know what a wacom tablet is!
OK three things:
1) I spend a lot of time youtubing videos of animals… goats, ducks, cows, bunnies.
2) I’m tall! You would know that if you saw me, but not via the interwebzzz.
3) I first switched to a Mac in 2004 and after 2 of these suckers I’ll never buy another one ever again.
I’d be really curious to know your thoughts on Kevin Smith…
xo

I always wanna know how all girls school would feel like, especially if it’s a boarding school. How Enid Blyton-ly vintage :D i love it!
I also haven’t seen much of Canada! I’ve been to Montreal, and to Toronto and Calgary once each but I was really young.
I’m really good at geography, but not at ALL when it comes to Canada (pretty embarrassing).
And I don’t know what a wacom tablet is :P
.-= Anais´s last blog ..Stressed, stressed, stressed! =-.
I love this! I feel like I just learned a whole lot about you in this little post. And no, you aren’t awkward!
Something you wouldn’t guess about me is that I played sports from age 4 and wanted to play in college. While I probably could have for volleyball, I decided I wanted to go to a big school (with a good football team) to make up for my lack of one in HS.
Also? I have a huge stack of books I want to read by my bedside table, and I find myself rereading the same books.

.-= Chelsea Talks Smack´s last blog ..Well, I’m DRINKING THE KOOL-AID. =-.
My phone’s ringtone is the theme from the West Wing – I am a HUGE politics geek.
Also, I have had hair of almost every imaginable colour – blue, green, purple and pink, red, brown, ‘top deck’…

You’d never guess:
– I don’t have a sense of smell
– I am somewhat interested in fashion and makeup
– I like a clean bedroom (my mum sure wouldn’t!)
– I had a twin that died in the womb
– I have agoraphobia
– I am Wiccan (I choose not to be “public” about it, don’t usually wear my pentagram, and rarely peform rituals)
it’s always nice to learn about new people .. sometimes you can relate to that .. which is amazing
hey! i found your blog just now and wanted to say that you’re adorable. i think i’ll be checking your page out more often in the future!
and something you wouldn’t guess about me is that i have 5 younger sisters.
I agree with everyone else who said this is a fun post!
Hmm…what don’t you know about me?
I was so allergic to ants as a kid that my mom rushed me to the ER when I was first bit as a toddler, thinking I had mumps.

Haha this blog is totally fun! I have been thinking about what you ‘may’ not know about me, and it’s a lot harder than you’d think. I mean, we have known each other since I was 17, but you are on the other side of the country.
But I have it. I absolutely have it. Get ready… the one thing you may not know about me is…
1. I am ALWAYS in the mood for No Doubt’s – Tragic Kingdom album. Always.
.-= Awmb´s last blog ..I feel knitty, oh so knitty… =-.
Wow this is a great post! I had no idea any of this about you. And no, I’ve never had a guy come up to me and offer to buy me a drink, but I did have a guy once send a drink over for me. It was kind of sweet.

Ooooh I LOVE this.
I’ve seen Elf about as many times as you’ve seen Almost Famous. (Which I’ve never seen – apparently I should get on that as I trust your judgement).
Despite telling everyone I am completely fine with my non-existent relationship with my parents, and that it is ‘their loss’, I spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to do things that will make them proud, and in turn, hope it will create a relationship between us.
Also, I lose absolutely everything. Thankfully, Ju has this excellent ability to keep track of not only her things, but mine as well. I can honestly said I’d have nothing without her.
I used to race go-karts as a kid, the real kind with fire suits and helmets and stuff. Also, I had hundreds of Beanie Babies growing up.
.-= Renee´s last blog ..When did my uterine activity become public fodder? =-.
This is such a great post, I had no idea you went to an all-girls school. Very cool. The political thing is also a bit surprising.
I’m very much an open-book so I SUCK at coming up with things that people don’t know about me but the two things that usually stick out in my mind are that I grew up on a farm and I grew up playing hockey! Haha
.-= Amber from Girl with the Red Hair´s last blog ..Boy Friends and Girl Friends =-.
i can’t believe you’ve never been hit on in a bar! you are a beautiful girl. i am guessing you just intimidated them!

I had to google wacom tablet! Also, I met my boyfriend on WoW. (hey I don’t play that anymore, whatever!). We have had a very happy 3.5 years and live together :p
Like Jimaie said, I’m in LOVE with Almost Famous. Oh, it’s so good. And the soundtrack too! I wish I could have lived back then!
Oh, and I’ve never ever had cable in my life. My parents never had it when I was growing up … and they still don’t. And I don’t have it now in my own casa because I’m cheap and would rather spend $$ on clothes and such. And I think I would watch WAY too much TV! And so, whenever John and I go to a motel with cable we can’t step away from the TV … “What Not To Wear” and “Clean House” and all that rediculousness! Oh, and MSNBC! Yay politics! Rachel Maddow & Keith Olbermann!
.-= sarah marie p´s last blog ..There once was a little puppy with big pointy ears, a short snout and a tiny tail … =-.
That last comment freaked me right out, because that is the exact song I’m listening to right now!
A couple of things you wouldn’t know about me? Well a lot of things, haha, aand I guess (like my sister up there) I once aspired to be an Olympic ski racer, and I was pretty well on my way, but then I went to school and now I ski like 4x a year. I miss it like crazy.
“Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today”
Almost Famous = one of the best movies EVER!
Kate Huson <3.
I’ve never been to a public school. I went to uniformed-wearing, private schools from kindergarten to 12th grade and LOVED it!
and I’m exactly the same way on #7 when it comes to math. keep all of it away from me, please and thank you.

Something else about me someone might not guess? I took private tap dance lessons for 10 years and my coordination still sucks.
I had a beer at lunch today and thought of you. =)

My father is a political science professor. He is incredibly analytical and taught me to be exactly the same. Like you, I love the analysis, seeing how things look from the other side, etc. I swear, should we ever sit down face to face, we just might get caught up in conversation for hours, dare I say, days!!!
Also, my parents didn’t get cable until I had already moved away from home. Definitely child abuse!
.-= SoMi’s Nilsa´s last blog ..Routine =-.
I can say the same about #1. This was fun to read about you!
I used to be so assertive & boy-crazy before I met Tyler. My friend and I went to Mexico when we were 16 and stayed with her Aunt. We met two mexican guys and fooled around with them and I didn’t know until later that the guy was 23! I can’t believe I did that…jeez!
.-= steph anne´s last blog ..Protected: Moving On & Trying Not To Look Back… =-.
LOL I am so right there with you on #5…I mean if I could articulate myself as well as you I could’ve written that myself, i love it!
I’ve never seen Almost Famous before! Sarah loves that movie and I remember her trying to get me to watch in when we were in high school b/c she would watch it all the time! I feel like I should do the right thing and just watch it already lol!
.-= jimaie.marie´s last blog ..♥ =-.
I had to look up what a Wacom tablet is. Do you like yours? Was it hard to get used to?
I’m ashamed to say that I can’t stand politics. I have really tried to be interested, but I have a physical reaction anytime anyone starts talking to me about it.

I don’t know if I can ever fully commit to being an environmental engineer. I have always wanted to become a teacher and I still want to be one. I think one of the main reasons I want to pursue a Master’s degree is so I can teach at colleges. Teaching is my passion.

I’ve seen Almost Famous once. I have no idea what a wacom tablet is. I went to a catholic school and wore my kilt hiked up. With Guess knee-high socks that had diamond g’s on them. I can be very lazy. I drink non-fat cappucinos. I can never spell capuccino right. I took marketing in college. But was two classes short of a diploma. I used to cut and colour hair in a salon, self-taught, but too lazy and cheap to go to hair school. I went to real estate college and practiced for two years before quitting because I hated it. I took a wedding planning course. I love doing weddings and baking cupcakes, but you definitely know that!
When are you coming to Vancouver?

I love the smell of chlorine on my skin. I swam competitively through high school and even when I was out of the water for a couple of days my skin still smelled like it – and I totally miss that.
Here in Philly there have been many drinks purchased for me – but none of those guys ever got as far as the quiet nerd I’ve ended up with <3
Also – I took 6 years of French and I can only speak in the present tense. No Judgment.

1. I don’t know what a wacom tablet is.
2. I hyperventilate pretty much every time I’m behind the wheel of a car, which is, uhh, daily. (Lame, I know.)
3. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I should never be a mother … and I think I’m okay with it.
4. I believe raisins should be banned from being in baked goods.

I once aspired to be a professional snowboarder and competed provincially (quite successfully).
Oh, and I’ve actually never seen Almost Famous. For a film major, there is a surprising amount of films that I haven’t seen (but of course there are a ton more that I have).
Almost Famous! One of my favorite movies too! I think I’ve seen it maybe a dozen times?
It’s really not so cool when a guy introduces himself and buys you a drink because more often than not the expect something at the end of the night for their kindess.
I took tap/jazz/ballet until I was a sophomore in high school.
I was a mother’s helper when I was 10 which got me started in the babysitting arena in my early teens.

I’ve NEVER seen Almost Famous. And I’m struggling to think of things you wouldn’t know about me. Maybe that I spent two years in stage school and martial arts?

You probably wouldn’t guess that I have a large skin-tag on my back (which i I love) that looks exactly like a pale nipple.
So, yes. I have a thid nipple. I find it kind of fascinating and is one of those things that not many people know about me! Actually, really only my boyfriend does.
It’s quite fascinating, actually.
I was a political science major in undergrad too! It really does shape your thinking into looking at all angles of something and breaking it down.
The one thing that I can think of that most people would be surprised to learn about me is that I have a tattoo. People are always shocked when they find out.

2. I went to a uniformed private school. Not all girls. That’s crazy!
4. I’ve never seen Almost Famous.
9. I’m a full supporter of blog ads. I figure that if I’m spending all this time on my blog, I may as well make a few bucks. I would write even if I never sold an ad, but every penny that comes into our house helps!
You’d probably never guess that I’ve only had two relationships in my life. Or maybe you would guess that. (Out of the two relationships, one was a boy from freshman to junior year of high school, and the other was/is Husband.)
You may also not know that I’m very unorganized (in reality), but mentally, I’m a very organized person. My mind is my day-planner.

I observe everything and notice every detail. To make it worse I also remember EVERYTHING… it comes in handy when I need to tell if someone is lying to me.
But I never tell people about it. In fact I find myself lying sometimes to cover the fact that I noticed something.
Very few of my friends are aware of this talent and in the past they have called me when their wives have asked them a question and they can’t answer…. It is strange that I can remember what outfit someone wore or what there favorite type of jam is???
There is something about me that you might not know….
