It’s the best costume for the day
I really enjoyed this sweet fashion faux pas post about not taking yourself seriously, and embracing that in your dress. Since I have a difficult time taking almost anything seriously, I thought it was perfect for me. Here’s mine…
This year I’ve been very stubborn and have mostly refused to participate in winter. I’ve especially refused to give up skirts, so when it’s really awful I’ve been adding leg warmers on top of my tights, tucking them into boots & pulling them up over my thighs so I can feel a little defiant but skip the frost bite.
“I have to warn you, I’m dressed like a crazy person!” has become the new way I greet my friends as they climb over snow banks and into my car, so we can barrel down icy, wind tunnel versions of streets towards warm restaurants and pinot noir. But you know what I’ve found over the past few years? I always have more fun when I look a little nuts.
Especially when you work in a bit of a boring & macabre industry, a sense of humour really helps. Case & point:
If the little humour I can throw back at day to day life doesn’t make up for everything, in my books it makes up for a lot.
Do you commit any willful faux pas?
ps – Two years in and this is one of the first times I’ve worn my glasses in a picture around here. Surprise! It’s astigmatism!
What a lovely blog you have, this is super cute.
I’m a classmate over at Club Indie and thought I’d stop by and support you. ;)

oh my word, you look adorable… and so cozy-chic!! LOVE!!
I wear a lot of hemp clothing.. mainly for the environmental benefits.. so everyone thinks I look like a bum or a hippy, but I love the clothes and they’re comfortable, durable, and great for my planet.. so who cares what I look like!!
.-= Braedy’s World´s last blog ..Oh god oh god oh god =-.
I love you so much for those tights and leg warmers. OMG girl you’re after my heart here! I love that you look at life insurance we a sense of humor, you have to!
I love this! I too have been ignoring winter via dresses layered with cozy tights, sparkly knee socks and boots. You look fantastic and fun!
.-= sarah´s last blog ..Purgatory =-.
I don’t see any faux pas going on here but I’m a dude so my word on fashion doesn’t carry much weight.
Is cutting your own hair a faux pas? Especially if you never know what you’re doing? Ok, that’s me.

Awww! I love this photo series. I had seen them on flickr yesterday and wondered if you were going to do a post with them. Too cute! I love the leg warmers, and that you are wearing skirts and dresses even though it’s winter! Let’s see…my most often willful faux pas is to wear black with brown. I’m always hearing fashion people talk about how it’s a big no-no and such…but it’s one of my favorite color combinations and I do it all the time! Black pants with brown shoes or a brown belt or black tights and brown boots–I love it.
.-= Lisa´s last blog ..Sometimes, all it takes is a little color, and the world is new again. =-.
you’re so cute!
i wore skirts all through the winter as well, so while eugene is not as cold as canada… i feel you! skirts everyday.
You are so cute, these pictures are fabulous!

Cheers to you for making a skirt look cozy! That is quite impressive ;) p.s. love the glasses, and slightly inspired to take a photo of me wearing mine.

Funky outfit. I actually like it.
I’m a socks with sandals person. I don’t care that it’s a fashion faux pas, I love it. I especially love colored toe socks with sandals, ha.

I totally love your outfit, especially those legwarmers!
Look how cute you are! I have a lot of leg warmers (although they don’t get much play here in Vegas) and will wear them with anything I see fit. I have purple ones and red ones and some that are so obnoxiously multi-colored that on a bright day they could do retinal damage.
Also, I have Birkenstock clogs that I love beyond words and will wear at every opportunity.
Gorgeous lighting in these photos.
And I totally dig you in glasses.
(a) I adore this outfit.
(b) I adore you.
(c) I say this ALL. THE. TIME. (“I have to warn you, I’m dressed like a crazy person!”)
First off, you’re freaking adorable. (I know I’ve said it before, but really. You are.)
Loving the leg warmers and how you look like you know where you’re going. … Want to come play dress up in Nashville?
And I have astigmatism, too!

I LIKE the glasses! And I love the leg warmers. I commit a million fashion faux pas – I am always a little “over the top” and I know it’s time to throttle back a bit when my husband tells me I look like I’m wearing a costume. Not a costume, dear! I have a lunch meeting!
Oh but here’s a question: are we still enforcing the no white after labor day or before Easter rule? Because I really love breaking that one!

I’ve started this new thing where everyday I try to look at much like an 80s dance instructor as possible. Working from home (or from Barnes and Noble) means I don’t have “work” clothes. Except now I do and it’s bright shirts and leggings and side ponytails and big hoop earrings and it’s amazing.

I’m a bit like you, I don’t like giving in to winter though am generally forced to give up halfway through. There have been times when I’ve worn something crazy. On a home clothes day at school I once wore a flowery top with combat trousers. It didn’t go down well.

You look so cosy! I’m sure I’m a walking fashion faux pas. The other day I wore navy and black together and was informed I was committing some kind of cardinal fashion sin. I actually thought my outfit looked awesome. I also have this BRIGHT green and white print shirtdress that is just assaulting to the eyes but I wear it in the spring because I find it cheery. I wouldn’t wear it right now though…it’s a little much for Halifax in winter :)
.-= amy´s last blog ..Leaving your work at work =-.
Beautiful!! You definitely look comfortable & warm! The leg warmers make you look tall like a model. :) Sometimes I wish I had to wear glasses just because it adds character to your face. I’ve gotten fake ones before and couldn’t last long with them on.

Holy cramoly this is so great. Your outfit is so cute! Completely you, and completely stunning, as usual. I love the lighting and poses in your pictures. I want to do one of these one day. When I have a nice camera, maybe. One day, it will happen. Ps. I thoroughly enjoy your ridiculous tweets.

My faux pas is wearing last season’s fashion, this season. Apparently royal blue was the color last year, and now it’s turquoise. I happen to love my royal blue handbag.

You are absolutely gorgeous, my dear. Thanks for sharing photos.
I have been all about tights this year. I wear tights at least twice a week. It has been fun but i am looking forward to temps warm enough that i can bare my legs!!

Yup, you’re gorgeous. I wish I could pull those sorts of looks off, but no way Jose.
I don’t know that I commit willful faux pas, as my professional wardrobe is kind of BORING, but I’m defintely known for spending half of high school in sweats on only sweats, even though I weight 50lbs than I currently do. Dude.
.-= barbetti´s last blog ..Dieting and Photos =-.
You.Are.Gorgeous. Seriously.
You look so pretty :)
I think the only purposeful fashion faux-pas I ever make is going out (in public) wearing my lounge/PJ pants lol!!! I don’t think anyone can REALLY tell but that’s just one of the reasons I love winter – with my coat on no one really knows ;)
.-= Anais´s last blog ..March Goals =-.
Ah yes the astigmatism. Me too. Some days I just have to pull out the glasses whether I want to or not. That said, I think your outfit is adorable!
As for myself, I have rather bulky legs. I grew up studying different kinds of dance and just have a lot more muscle in my calves than the rest of my body, and it’s also really noticeable because I have small ankles. I’ve read the best way to hide that is to actually cover my calves. But I like wearing knee length skirts and such too much. Breaking rules can be fun :)
.-= Carolina´s last blog ..This Too Shall Pass =-.
Um, those pictures belong in a magazine. Not only are they beautiful, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and your outfit is adorable.
I don’t take too many risks when I dress. I just feel super uncomfortable all day and feel weird. The most I’ll do is wear my fake Uggs with my one pair of skinny jeans. Which are cute and I like them. I wish I could try leg warmers!
.-= Stephany´s last blog ..Priorities =-.
You know, I read a number of fashion blogs but this is the first outfit post I’ve seen in MONTHS that made me do a double take and think, hey, that’s really cool and yet also wearable. I might even be able to pull that off myself. Well, if the skirt were just a teensy bit longer… I was not blessed with legs like yours!
Oh my god, you look so serious in that first pic and then super super adorable in the next ones. I love leg warmers. My daughter insists on wearing shorts over tights lately. She knows what’s up!

You inspired us to take some fashion blogging photos today because you look so awesome! We think you should do this way more often.
Before I even read your post, I glanced at the pretty pictures and thought oh! Kyla makes leg warmers look super cute, are leg warmers cool now? Kyla’s making leg warmers look cool! And then I read the post and actually, if that is how crazy people dress, then I should like to be crazy :) You look super cute, chicka. Your style is awesome, and hurrah for rocking it like you do! :)

I say YES to fashion faux pas! I wear socks with my pumps to keep my feet warm, mix red and pink and different patterns AND I wear the same outfit more than once. More than twice, even!
It’s lovely to see your style. The glasses are fab too! :)

Okay – I have to say, I LOVE fashion! I read books about it, I watch “What not to wear” religiously and I try to practice what I preach.
HOWEVER, fashion is all about personal style and confidence which I think you have in DROVES. Seriously, any pics I have seen of you and any outfits, you just look amazing and you pull of your clothes SO well.
For example, you followed all the style rules: dark on the bottom, light on the top, a high waisted pencil skirt to elongate your legs, a wide belt nipping it at your waist and even your leg warmers match your tights so they don’t break up your leg line…GORGEOUS. And you pull it all off PERFECTLY!! It’s very “Canada Winter Chic”.
AND, with your hair and your poses (and that freaking amazing camera) you look like a gorgeous model.
I give all of this an A+++ – no faux pas in my book (even though I am not an expert…though I realize that came off sounding kind of pretentious, which I didn’t mean it to!!!)
HA! I loved when she said that- “it really is the best costume for the day!” I watched the original documentary and Edie actually says that in the most serious way possible. Amazing how spot on Drew was.
Love your glasses! As for dressing whackadoo….I’m with you- absolutely more fun!
your outfit looks 100% comfortable and adorable. I only wish I was tall enough to pull off that kind of look.
.-= thatShortChick´s last blog ..PC vs. Mac =-.
I shun fashion sense all the time. I wear skiing pants to work. And hiking boots to bars. I do the “look cute” thing, too. But, my husband says how beautiful I look no matter what I’m wearing. It’s not very good training for the “look cute” thing all the time when the comfy thing yells so loudly. =)
Ha! I agree! Life is more fun when you look a little nuts. That’s why I embrace my messy hair. :)

Umm, I freaking love your outfit. Like LOVE it. I am all about the boots and tights in the winter. Because, let’s face it, as long-legged ladies, of course we love our skirts, and why should we have to give them up just because it gets a wee bit chilly outside???!!
.-= Hannah´s last blog ..Give a lady a little (leg) room. =-.
Great pictures!! I wish I had such a nice backdrop for fashion photography. What kind of camera do you use?
It’s hard to commit fashion faux pas in Texas, but I definitely underdress for the weather. It’s like if I wear flip flops and shorts it HAS to warm up, right?? I don’t dress up for work really either, I don’t have a job which requires heels so I wear mostly flats and Sperry’s. I WISH I had an excuse to wear cute dresses and tights.
Thanks so much! I’m lucky to live in such a sweet little character home. The camera that I usually use is a canon rebel, just with the kit zoom, but for these ones I had borrowed a Canon 5D with a terrifyingly beautiful zoom on it. I actually did a winter walk around that I’m going to post next week and I was convinced that I was going to be mugged the whole time! I think I prefer my little rebel ;)

You need to participate in this “faux pas” more often because you are adorable and I love your style. I have tons of leg warmers and you’re inspiring me to pair them with a skirt soon–Spring is right around the corner so I better hurry!
ps; Unrelated but I got your email in response to mine and even though I haven’t had a chance to reply yet, just know it make me feel a million times better already. <3

One – you’re completely adorable, and I do exactly the same thing, adding leg warmers to my winter wardrobe because midwest winters require all kinds of warm layers!
Two – I suppose whether or not this is a faux pas, but I rock leggings ALL spring, summer, and fall. It’s debatable whether or not I’m wearing them “as pants,” depending on the length of my dress, but I get away with so many more cute dresses with lengths I’d feel self-conscious about if it weren’t for leggings.

I totally agree! I have a pair of kids that has the days of the week on them. Each day is a different color. I bought them for $6 at Ross. I wear them when I think I will go crazy if I don’t. They make me feel better. Weird!

Eeei you are so gosh-darn pretty!
You pull off that look SO WELL. I wonder if I could… I never have jumped on the tights bandwagon but I wear that exact same outfit (minus the tights and leg warmers) often in the summer. So maybe I could pull it off with tights in the winter… Hmm.
Also, LOVED this post :)

As for me? I *just* realized that I’d been buying jeans two sizes too large for the longest time–the sales people are finally calling me out on it! You mean–the reason they were getting really baggy at the end of the day is because they were too big? Doy.

I love what you said about having more fun when you look a little nuts… it’s sooo true. My faux pas always have to do with my choice in shoes. I never, EVER wear closed toed shoes when it’s raining and it’s a bit ridiculous. I refuse to let the weather dictate what I wear, hahaha.
LOVE the glasses! Super cute, lady.

I think you look awesome in that outfit! Admittedly, I’ve never thought of that – wearing leg warmers over tights – but that’s something I just might jot down in

When it comes to fashion, I have pretty much given up. My long and dangly arms are not made for long-sleeved shirts. It takes me weeks or better months to find at least one sweater that fits. Same with pants. It’s a disaster. Everything that’s cute on others looks obnoxious on me. I am not kidding. Oh yeah, and on top of that, I barely have any cleavage. I should probably stock up on cup A bras for after we have kids because my mom had to do the same. I am doomed!
I should seriously write a post about this. :)
Well, on to more positive things: I think you are gorgeous! You need to post more fashion pictures. I adore your style.

While I love to read fashion magazines, I basically make up my own. I prefer to not look like everyone else, that gets boring. I wear what I like, regardless of what the rules are or if anyone else thinks it works or doesn’t. Usually I’m combining fun colors. =)
Oh heck yeah! We have the same strategy. Except instead of legwarmers I have these hideous sweater-boots that come up to mid-shin. Wear them with everything. And glasses are totally for winter, I pretend that they cover my eyes enough to not wear makeup… but they really don’t. Meh.
