it’s a bibimbap kind of love
I like to think of myself as an adventurous eater, but being vegetarian I tend to sign up for fairly tame foodie adventures.
Lately it’s been bothering me that I’m not trying more exciting new foods, so I decided to try something different. I went to a little Korean place called Kimch’i in the gorgeous historic district of my city’s downtown. The owner was wonderful & explained the whole menu to me, and had even gone to the trouble of making her Kimchi recipe (the spicy pickled side dish) was vegan!
My first Korean food ever was the bibimbap above, and it was a little bowl of heaven! Next stop? Definitely the Korean Sub. I can’t wait to explore the rest of the menu!
Are you a brave or reluctant foodie?
I’m working on the brave :)
this normally very picky eater is now a HUGE fan of kimch’i on albert ~ tried the korean burrito on thursday, and went back for tacos with spicy pork today… so amazing! can’t wait to try the sub and hopefully get my hands on some of the mac ‘n cheese too :)
I think I definitely need to get the mac and cheese someday soon too! We’ll have to make it a date, we can talk interchangeable needles & delicious food :)
Looks yummy! By the way, I featured you on my “10 Things I Love Sunday” blog post :)
Thanks so much Rachele! :)
This is my first time visiting your blog. I must say I’m quite fond of it. <3
Fond is good, thank you for finding me! :)
I have to admit, I’ve only had Korean food a few times and it’s an “americanized” version because I have no idea how to eat it or what everything means. That said, i still really enjoyed it, especially with veggies!
i have never had Korean, but I’d love to try it. I’m a BRAVE foodie, for sure. I don’t like eating the same old meals.
Looks amazing! I’m mostly adventurous and will usually try anything once so long as it doesn’t have fish or some strange meat in it. I don’t think I’ve ever had Korean food before. You’ve sparked my interest!
i remember it wasn’t that little ;) I loved the tacos I had at Kimch’i :)
Did you see at Polo Park there’s a restaurant opening in the foodcourt called Kimchi (beside Opa)? Do you know if it’s the same?
xo, LA
Now that I am vegan, this has been the most adventurous decision of my foodie life. I am for once enjoying food, embracing the fact that I live a cruelty free life and eating foods that Mother Earth created herself.
Oh, I am definitely an adventurous eater… but like you, only when no animal killing is involved! Sooo… that usually means just adventurous in flavor and spice combinations. :)
I am pretty brave myself. I grew up with a grandmother that made us try EVERYTHING when we were little, so I still mostly have that ideal. That Korean food looks delish. :-)
I grew up a bit on the picky side, but luckily I nonetheless had parents who exposed me to all different types of food, so as I’ve gotten less picky, it’s been easy to expand my horizons. I absolutely LOVE bibimbap. And as another poster above said, DEFINITELY next time get the dolsot (stone pot) version. The hot stone pot gives everything a delightful crispiness (who doesn’t love crispy rice!). And at a Korean BBQ I could practically live on all the little side dishes…I believe banchan (sp?) is the word for those. yum, now you’ve got me craving Korean!
OMG, I LOVE KIMCHI. (Okay, done with the caps)
I absolutely LOVE Korean food! We have a large Korean population here in Seattle so there’s no shortage of good Korean restaurants. We also have several large Asian markets so I’ve learned to make a few dishes at home. So glad you enjoyed it!
I’m definitely an adventurous foodie. I’ll try anything once and there aren’t a whole lot of things I don’t like.
My best friend is Korean AND a chef so believe me when I say, I know just how amazing Korean food is :) Kimchi is my fave!
I’m brave as long as I don’t know what I’m eating! I’ve eaten some weird foods and liked them just because no one told me what was in the dish. Sea cucumber? Surprisingly delicious!
I love Korean food, but didn’t until I became close friends with someone from Korea. She took me to a real authentic Korean bbq place. I fell in love. I don’t eat four legged animals, so sometimes being an adventurous eater is tough. I am definitely adventurous in my eating and cooking though. If I ever get married, my husband will have to like Thai, Indian and Mexican food because that is almost all I ever cook. :) I love bold flavors and things I can’t pronounce!
Well, I am adventurous, but I am limited by my gluten intolerance… So that means I usually don’t get to try a lol of new things…
I think the most adventurous thing I ate was bone marrow… which I had in France. I did not love it, but I was proud of myself for trying something sort of crazy!
I’m reluctant.
But only because of my allergies.
It’s not a choice I like to make =)
I am a very adventurous eater. :D It opens your eyes to so much more!
I’m sooo reluctant. There are a lot of things I don’t like. I really want to go vegetarian but I need some ideas of really normal things to eat!
I had that the other day! You should try to see if your town or a nearby one has one of those Korean restaurants where you get to cook your own food.
I <3 food and I don't hide it; I'm always out and about trying new restaurants/cuisines/etc.
I try to be brave as well but sometimes I fall into this comfy cozy way of eating and I don’t mind that either :)
I’m definitely an adventurous foodie. However, I eat meat so this opens my options up a lot more. I love Korean food & sometimes like eating Kimchi as a snack, just because.
I’d say I’m a pretty brave foodie — that is, as brave as a vegetarian can be!! Ok, so I’m not exactly a vegetarian anymore, as I now eat fish occasionally; I suppose technically I’m a pescetarian, but having been a vegetarian most of my life it’s hard to shake that label!
Anyway, I LOVE Asian food (most especially Japanese and Thai!) but have yet to try Korean. You’ve definitely inspired me to give it a go because that dish looks absolutely delicious!
The subs are awesome!
I wouldn’t say I’m reluctant so much as comfortable & sometimes lazy. Many times if I find something I really like I tend to just get it & not put much more thought into it…that’s not to say I don’t like going somewhere new or discovering another favorite. :)
Mwah!
I LOVE Korean food! I was introduced to Korean BBQ by a Korean coworker–she literally ordered everything for me and it all was delicious. Cheers to being a more adventurous eater! I made that pact years ago and it has paid off well :)
Korean food is totally underrated. One of my best childhood friends was Korean, and one of the perks of going to play at her house was the sticky rice & seaweed with hot pickles her mom would give us to snack on.
That dish looks amazing!
I try to be brave. It is hard sometimes because I am yeast intolerant and I am allergic to pineapple, and very recently allergic to papaya so I can’t try things with bread, yeast is a hidden ingredient in many foods, and I a scared of trying untested fruits!
But I do make do and I make a point of trying new things…and they are usually delicious! If only I knew now what I knew when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have been picky!
I hear you! My husband is allergic to soy, corn, all nuts & all fish/seafood and it does tend to have you ramp back what you try- but being an adventurous home cook (or finding those places that are safe for you to eat at!) is just as fun :)
That looks amazing, I am totally an adventurous foodie…I love the excitement that comes with trying new food! In fact on Friday, I have reservations at a place where I will be trying goat. Now that one, I am a little apprehensive about…
Goat? lol I love that being vegetarian gives me an automatic opt out of those experiences! Good luck :)
Looks amazing! What’s in it?
It’s rice, cooked veggies, a little chili powder and an egg on top. Really filling :)
Yum! I haven’t had korean food in AGES. I looooove bibimbap.
Anyway, I’m an adventurous foodie, but it helps that I generally don’t rule out any food group. While I lean towards very healthy vegetarianism in my daily life, I am still an omnivore and often use our meals out as the opportunity to try new things, eat meat etc.
Yes, I think I am a fairly brave foodie… although there are certain things that I don’t think I would ever try (like insects, dog, snake or something like that).
I’ve had Korean food before, but it’s something I definitely need/want to explore more!
Oh! I’ve never had Korean and tend to shy away from Asian food on the whole, save the ONE Thai dish I love. For some reason I’ve found the flavors never sit will with me. Maybe it’s just your photography work, but I’m thinking this looks delicious…
oooh that looks so delicious!! I’m a big fan of Asian cuisine. I’ve been a vegetarian for 14years now and at first I would stick to grilled cheese and pizza, which is not very healthy. But over the last few years I’ve experimented a lot. Vietnamese is my fav! I love Pho noodle dishes.
Mmmmm…Korean food. I’ve been craving some good ethnic cuisine…Thai, Indian, Korean. This just fed my craving even more!!
I’m not the Anthony Bourdain kind of brave, but I do like exploring menus at new restaurants and trying things I haven’t tried before.
I am not really an adventurous foodie. Its hard to be adventurous when there isn’t a whole lot of diversity in my area. While I like to think I can be brave and try new things, the truth is I like what I like. I would love to try Korean food though at some point. I was scared to try sushi, then I did and I haven’t looked back. =)
Being half Korean I have most definately had Korean food before, you picked a great choice- now I’m hungry :)
Hmmm I will have to try Korean food. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to food and will usually try anything once!
I’m not a picky eater by any means. I’ll try anything once. you never know until you try, right?
It looks delicious! I’ve never had Korean cuisine before.
I’m somewhat tame when it comes to food. I like to try new things, but I often stick to what I know.
Yay for Korean food. You should ask if they have a dolsot bibimbap (돌솥). Dolsot means stone pot and it comes in a little stone dish that keeps the rice warm and actually makes it crispy on the edges! Soooo yummy! Glad you found a place with good Korean food.
