House Love: Craft Room
One of the biggest things that I’ve been lacking, no matter where I’ve lived, is a proper space for my crafty things. Where I don’t have to clean up after two hours at something, where I can have my things within arms reach and where I can just be quiet, or loud of messy. Where I can turn my music up way too loud and just flop down.
And then we bought our house.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: The Craft Room.
No air conditioning = no getting colds in the middle of summer
My grandmother’s recipe box, a measuring tape stolen from my mom, my notebooks
Hand picked Icelandic Wool, waiting to be knit when my hands & wrists are stronger
The room is a little more crowded now that it also has a sewing machine and a loom (the iMac is gone) but the best feature it has is far and away a little day bed. Tucked into the side of the room with the slanted ceiling it sprawls three feet deep and the width of the little room. Come winter and post wedding this is going to be my hide away, no questions asked.
The wedding planning is exciting and a one of a kind experience, but I’ve been sad that it’s taken away from working on my little online shop. Let’s not mince words, I’ve been sulking. And the fact that my repetitive stress injuries in my forearms seem to be coming back isn’t making me a happy camper either, it’s all more reason I have to wait to make a push in the craft direction I want to go in.
In the middle of my sulking this mid-weekend I was contacted by a canadian crafters website with extremely strong artist support and traffic that would be interested in featuring a limited edition line of handwoven scarves and neck warmers by me! Which is an expression of interest on the basis of work I haven’t yet created because my loom isn’t yet set up, which is kind of wildly exciting. It made me remember that the whole reason I found myself a sewing machine & a loom was so that I could still make things – just in a way that’s better for me.
There is a lot of wedding DIY to do, don’t get me wrong, but when it’s done I know what I’m going to be doing, cause there’s lots of opportunity to be had.
I love the idea of having space… it just seems so much more conducive to being productive. Hell, I’m just happy to have room for a desk outside of my bedroom… my mini-office feels luxurious!
Ooo, I would love to have a craft room. Better yet, an art room. :] & I commend you for your knitting. I tried to knit & I nearly succeeded, but I was getting so frustrated that I couldn’t make it look pretty that I gave up. I’ll pick it up again — my mother has needles at her house — but I’m definitely going to need to sip some tea so I can relax. :]
Craft room looks gorgeous! That wooden table is really nice. Next we need a pic of the loom!
Yeah, once the wedding planning is over it’s like a big sigh of relief and you can get on with the business of living..that’s why getting married in four months works so well, you have less time to obsess over it!
so jealous of your craft room! Yeah, how amazing is that yarn? Is it wrong that I am seriously considering trying to order it from Germany when she opens her shop next? insanity. Here is the link http://rohrspatzundwollmeise.de/flash_content/rohrspatzundwollmeise.html if you click on shop you can see the categories to the left, if you click in there, you can see all the yarn.
I want a craft room!
Well I guess first I’d have to be crafty.
I absolutely love that you are able to devote a whole room to your craft. Because that craft is your livelihood. And it’s important to keep it breathing. Living. So, take this time ramping up to your wedding to heal your arms and hands. And when you’re living in wedded bliss, hopefully your body will be ready to tackle these really exciting opportunities that lay ahead of you.
I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure that stolen measuring tapes are the only kind that really work.
Super jealous of the craft room am I!! I can’t wait until we have some more space so that I can spread out and never lose a crochet hook again!
I was relieved once wedding planning was over. I liked it but I was happy to get back to real life and have time to do other things I enjoy. Love the craft room!
