Fridays Are For…Answers vol. 2
A while ago I did a Q & A post, and every few weeks I’m answering some of the questions you guys asked :)
Now that its been a year, how are your wallpapered cupboards holding up? Do the wash well? Any tips or tircks? I love the idea for my own kitchen, which has the same fugly melamine cabinets. from Paige
Back story: Last year I did a fast, cheap & pretty little makeover on my kitchen cabinets that was featured on Design*Sponge, and part of it involved wallpapering over our basic melamine cabinets (see it here).
One year later it’s holding up up great, but I do have a couple of tips. I waited a long time to seal them, and in that time a couple started to peel back at the corners. I re-did those panels, and when they dried I mod podged them, and since then they’ve been perfect. They wash well & while it means I’ve committed us to them, it’s such a cute feature of the kitchen that I can’t imagine them another way.
Cheesy maybe, but, what’s your favorite movie? from Lisa
Hands down, the original Grey Gardens documentary. It’s such a beautiful portrait of not just Big Edie & Little Edie, but also of aging women and those weird and fantastic family relationships. I love Little Edie’s fashion sense (big surprise!) and her spirit. It’s all so delicately handled and crazy, if you haven’t seen it I would really recommend it.
What are your quirkiest habits and how do they mesh with your husband’s? from Her New Deal
My quirkiest habits all come from how right brained I am. I’m awesome at spatial things, going by instinct & inventing solutions to problems, but I lose my car in a parking lot & have trouble remembering things without writing them down. And I’m thoroughly silly. I’m always coming up with word games and rhyming things, and bouncing crazy ideas off of Mister.
Mister is my polar opposite in terms of how I approach things. He’s playful and relaxed, but he’s still very black and white, logical, and linear. He’s good at things that require lots of math or memory, and that get done fast. It makes us a great team, we balance out :)
I love how open and honest you are in your posts, but do you ever struggle with how much to share on your blog? How do you decide what to share? Any advice for how to be open without feeling like you’re sharing too much? from Caiti
I think the line is different for everyone, but for me it comes down to walking the line between what’s personal versus what’s private. For me, personal things are what I’m doing, my reactions to things in my life, my plans, projects & inspiration. Anything that I get a “Oh I have to tell this to a friend!” feeling about. Private things are the intricacies of my marriage & family, and my friendships.
Mostly, I decide what to share based on what story I’m telling. If I have a post written but have a “Hm, I don’t know…” or “I hope _____ doesn’t read this” feeling, to me that’s a marker of a weak story or something that would be better for an e-mail to a friend. I want this to be a space that’s fun, inspiring & that draws people in – anything that doesn’t hit that mark doesn’t get published, because it’s probably not that interesting in the grand scheme of things! :)
Even though your hair is super cute short do you ever think about growing it out and wearing it long? from Iris Ashley
Actually, I’m currently growing it out! I’m posting a picture a week here & I’m aiming for a sleek (much less thick) bob. As for growing it out really long, I feel like it makes me look really young. Maybe in a while, but for now I’m sticking with shoulder length & above.

I have never seen gray gardens. I need to fix that, as soon as possible. I agree that the personal vs. private line is different for us all. I will discuss a lot on my blog but there are some things that are strictly off limits.
I love your private/personal distinction. I think it’ a little different for me–some of what I would write I consider personal for most of the world, but private for my family, as in they can’t/shouldn’t see it.
Your hair is amazing no matter what you do to it, it seems! Enjoy the growing out!
That’s a very good approach to what to blog about and what to keep private.
I love these question and answer posts oh so much my dear. <3
and I think i could totally see you with a haircut a little bit longer up top and longer swoopy bangs. what is your hair style goal as it grows out?
<3 moo
Loved your answered! I too like the hair growth project. Very cool idea.
Mmmm, we are twinsies. People might question my bright yellow car, but guess who can ALWAYS figure out where she parked?? HRM??

You know it’s funny; I think that when I grow my hair out I look older (in a good way) so that’s what I’m currently working towards!
Oh, I’m interested to see where you go with your hair. A sleek bob sounds spectacular :)
I love Grey Gardens too. It’s so fascinating and bizarre.
Happy weekend, Kyla!

great Q&A re: personal posting, this is something I feel myself struggling with so much lately. The posts that I write that are personal get more traffic than the others, so I feel like I should do more of them…but it’s scary!
oh, i need to watch that! & i think your hair is darling short! =)
Oh I’m excited you’re growing your hair out a bit – I always loved your bob before!! But you also look amazing with short hair, not everyone can pull it off but you totally do.
Mine and Eric’s personalities are kind of opposite too. I’m rational/logical and he’s more of a free-thinker/spontaneous BUT at the same time we’re vice versa because when we were in Europe I all of a sudden saw this entirely different side of him that was totally logical, playing-it-safe, organized etc. and I was way more free-spirited and spontaneous over there then I am in normal life.
Have a lovely long weekend!
I love your hair-growth plan! I’m trying to get mine down to my collarbones, but it’s taking some serious time getting these layers to behave!
I 100% agree with your ‘personal vs. private’ theory. Loved your answers! xo
Love these.
I love these posts! :) Hope you have a great weekend Kyla!
I haven’t seen Grey Gardens yet, but am excited to see it’s available on Netflix instant! Definitely going to watch it this weekend. Thanks for the tip! <3
I really want to renovate our kitchen cabinets. They are laminate press-board that looks like fake wood. Any suggestions? I don’t think I can paint over them, but maybe I’m wrong!
Also, “The Great Grow” project is adorable! What did you use to take the week one pic? I had a similar haircut to yours a few years ago and now my hair is long. It take courage to cut your hair short and I love ladies who take the plunge. You really rock the ‘do!
xo
I love that you & Mister totally have the ying/yang thing going for you. I am probably more similar to your husband so it woudl be ideal for me to marry someone who is a bit more of a free thinker. A bit more of an ‘outside the box’ person. If I married someone like me, I think we’d drive each other crazy. ;)
Love reading these – always fun to learn more about you!
Happy Friday. See you on MONDAY!!! Squeal! So excited!
I know what you mean about what to write/what not to write on the blog. I mostly stay away from writing about Husband, unless it’s in passing, and I won’t write about any marital problems that arise … Unless there is a “lesson to be learned” outcome to it that I’d like to share. When I wrote about my sister a while back, I made sure I told her about it, and she let me know she was okay with it.
I also love that you and Mister are opposite. Husband and I are opposite as well, though our thinking has been the same lately.
Love these posts!
Love these answers! Can’t wait to see your hair get longer (right now that’s a very invested topic for me in general, ha!)
Very awesome! I’m new here so I had to go back and check out the wall paper blog, but oh my. It is a beautiful difference. Never thought about wall papering cabinets. Me thinks I might try that when I finally own my space.
I really enjoyed Grey Gardens, though I had watched the film version with Drew Barrymore first. Have you seen that, and if so did you like it? I thought Drew was pretty spot on with her portrayal of Little Edie, after watching the documentary.
