Friday is for…{Tattoo Ideas}
I went in for my tattoo consultation last weekend and I’m scheduled in for June! I’m so excited, it’s silly. And I’m so nervous, it’s silly. Thankfully I’ll have a lot to keep my mind busy until then. When I went in I did the same thing as when I get a hair cut – I brought pictures of what I like and what I don’t like, so when I express myself all wrong I still have something concrete to explain my tastes.
In keeping with the Japanese look that I already have (and my love affair with Vancouver), I’m going to be getting cherry blossoms done in an old fashioned looking illustration style. See? I’m terrible at expressing myself ideas about visual things. This is a little of what I brought in…
I love the placement of Mandi’s tattoo, the old fashioned look of the illustration in the top left and the airy, delicate feel in the blossoms at the bottom.
I don’t like designs that are overly sharp or cartoonish, that emphasize the branches over the blossoms and that are spread out over a really large area.
{from: around the web}
I won’t get to see the sketches until the day I go in and I can barely wait! I’m going to a new shop this time and am working with the owner who seems to think it’s a neat idea, and gets the style that I’m looking for. It should be four or five hours all told. Deep breaths!
Everyone seems to love or loathe tattoos, what’s your take?
I rarely see ones that I want for myself, but I just love ones that really suit their owners
i never used to like tattoos. now i have a small black one on my back that i got on a whim in Thailand :) i LOVE it! thinking of getting a coloured one… but im scared I might get over the colour?! suggestions?!
absolutely stunning! great choice

My first comment on your blog!
I love the “yes” and “no” pile.
I definitely agree that blossoms can be done right and wrong!
I have no tattoos, and that’s because my mind changes all the time. I’ve been mulling over a 60s pop art bold graphic lines and text idea for a few years… but I just haven’t felt inspired to take the plunge!
:)
Good luck!
for a long time i thought i wanted a tattoo but i could never settle on anything and i’m glad i didn’t just get something on a whim. as for tattoos on other people, i don’t mind them as much and i like them more when they have meaning or a story behind them, it just makes it seem a little more sincere i guess.
can’t wait to see what your new one turns out like, the yes pile is great inspiration.
.-= katelin´s last blog ..Hollywood go round. =-.
I love your tattoo ideas! They’re very classy.
I think tattoos are perfectly fine. I may get one soon! I have to draw the line at tacky, though… Too many bad tattoos can equal trashy.
.-= Megan´s last blog ..This and That =-.
I love the stories behind tattoos. Also, love your yes, pile and can’t wait to see what your tattoo artist comes up with for you. It will be stunning I am sure. I have one tattoo and would like another but haven’t settled on what I want. I love the one I have though and its meaningful to me.
I love tattoos on other people but haven’t decided if they’re for me yet. I can’t wait to see what yours ends up looking like! :)

I have a friend that has a flower tattoo with butterflies from her left shoulder to her right hip. It is absolutely beautiful and suits her very well.
I am a huge fan of big floral tattoos that spiral around one’s body. That’s why I adore your choice. :)
I always tell myself, once I lose those 15 lbs that I am hoping to lose and once I can keep them off, then it’s time for me to get a tattoo.
.-= Stefanie´s last blog ..When the Army comes first. =-.
Those flowers look gorgeous! I cannot wait to see the final result!
For me, I’m so indecisive that I do not have any tattoos because I just cannot make up my mind as to one thing I would want. I think they are fascinating, though, and I’ve photographed a LOT of tattoos being given.
.-= E.P.´s last blog ..This little puppy =-.
I agree with your ‘no’ pile as well, except the top left. I think it’s more unusual than the other ones. But not for me.
I’ve been struggling with the idea of a new tattoo for a while. I’d been on the cherry blossoms theme (because of Vancouver) too but hadn’t found something I like yet. I agree I don’t want something cartoonish at all.
I love tattoos on other people, but I have a hard time deciding on ones for myself (I have one on my ankle, and that’s it). I can’t decide where else I’d like to get one and what. I want something Canadian but I can’t settle on ‘what’ yet or where. I’m not a person who could have very visible tattoos (arms, shoulders), so I hold off until I can decide.
.-= Caz´s last blog ..Where in the World Wednesdays =-.
Oh that’s so exciting! I can’t wait to see the final product! Personally, I don’t think I’ll ever get a tattoo but that’s just me. I still like them and love the artistic element to them. I’m always fascinated by those who have one (or more) to hear about it.
I neither love nor loathe tattoos, actually. I think they can look incredibly cool and incredibly tacky. Personally, I would not get one because they are too permanent for me, and I don’t know what I would want to get one off that I know for sure I’d still love in 40 years. The cherry blossoms sound like a great idea, though.
.-= Karen´s last blog ..A year I never forgot =-.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I am sure it will be gorgeous. I laos love cherry blossoms. They are so beautiful.

I love tattoos. I believe they should be VERY personal. I have a large cherry blossom mandala in progress on my upper back. I wrote a blog post about it: http://www.returntorural.com/2010/02/dina-and-cherry-blossoms.html

i’m thinking about one myself, although maybe i’mm too old 3_ (fill in the blank).
thoughts?

Wonderful tattoos! but the sad thing is in our part of the world we dont get such tattoos (:- any way it will look cool on you.
.-= amy´s last blog ..Who is smarter ? =-.
Love the tattoos. Don’t have tattoos myself but love looking at creative tattoos like these!
I’ve always wanted to have a tattoo but chickened out at the last minute because I never found your the time, the money, nor the perfect tattoo for me. But it’s funny cause in the “no” pile I see a lot of asian girls with that cherry tree blossom and I have no idea why. The first tattoo I love the artwork to it. But I love tattoos but I rate tattoos on artistry and if people choose the cartoon-y styles then they are just too immature for me, that’s just my two cents in this.
I love tattoos. I have three myself but they are all small. I really like cherry blossoms and if I decide to get a flower tattoo, I would want cherry blossoms. But I have my next tattoo in mind, I just have to book an appointment with my tattoo guy soon.
I can’t wait to see your tattoo once it’s done. I hope you will share it with us.

A tattoo consultation? What happened to the day when people, mostly bikers, sailors, and their girlfriends just got drunk stumbled into a tattoo parlor and got mom or a naked girl tattooed on their body?
Not a tattoo person. I can admire a tattoo on someone else, but I am a wimp when it comes to pain. So I will just let others get them ha
Best,

mandi’s tattoo was one of my favorites that i’ve ever seen! i adore the placement of it and everything about it. i’m a total “YES” tattoo person. can’t wait to see yours finished! june will be here before you know it. :D
.-= shaina´s last blog .. =-.
I LOVE your approach. I’m working on the next part of mine and your plans of a consultation and bringing in pictures are so – SMART, yet something I hadn’t considered, ha.
.-= Doniree´s last blog ..Time Out =-.
I love tattoos. It’s a commitment I’m not willing to take, however, seeing as I’m constantly changing my mind about the things I like and don’t like. I’d never want to regret something so permanent. I lived out my tattoo fantasies vicariously through an old best friend, though! The last time we spoke, she had eleven of them and I’m positive she’s added more since then. Some people whine about the wait involved with going to accompany someone while they get a tattoo, but I think it’s one of the coolest experiences ever. Anyway, I can’t wait to see how your cherry blossoms come out!
Having someone you can live through? That’s amazing! I was always hoping that Mister would get a sleeve or something but that’s not his style… so I’m going out to get one for myself! lol
Love your “yes pile”… I am not big into “colored” tattoos to be honest.
But then again, I don’t even have a tattoo myself, so what do I know? ;)
I totally agree that I love to see tattoos that suit their owners.
Even though I don’t think I would ever get a tattoo myself, I do like tattoos on other people – if they’re tasteful and not to “overwhelming”.
I love tattoos! I don’t have one myself, something I’m hoping to change this year :)
Excited to see how yours turns out.
.-= Carolina´s last blog ..Food For Thought =-.
I’ve never thought of tattoos as delicate, but it seems that the ideas you took in certainly are. I can’t wait to see what your artist comes up with!
I’m far too chicken for that. Needles and I just don’t have the best of relationships, but I adore my dad and brother’s tattoos.
.-= Her´s last blog ..Listed: Hair and (not so good) baby news =-.
I LOVE tattoos. If I wasn’t such a baby I think I’d have tons more. I’d love to have one go all down the side of my ribs but alas, I’m about 30 pounds too heavy for that look and I know I wouldn’t be able to sit through it. I have a tiny sparrow on the inside of my left wrist that I want to eventually add a flock to going across and down my forarm and I’m getting the italian word for “to be seen” on my right wrist. And maybe something on my wring finger when I say “I do” :)
.-= Becka´s last blog ..Winners of the 222 contests announced! =-.
Oh you’re brave! I’ve heard that the wrist is really brutal- you’re far more tough than I am!
Both Nate and I have wrist ones and they weren’t bad at all. He could barely make it through the one on his collarbone/neck. Mine wasn’t bad at all. I think as long as you’re on a fleshy area and not on bone, it’s not so bad.
.-= Becka´s last blog ..If eclectic is wrong, I don’t wanna be right. =-.
Oh, I really love the yes photo!
I’m a tattoo person, and I have 3. I want moooore! Mandi’s tattoo is just darling and I think it has sparked up a lot of interest in me to get rose tattoos. Beautiful ones.
.-= Awmb´s last blog ..Procrastination at it’s best =-.
I’ll admit, I’m not a big fan of tattoos. I would never get one myself (I say this now, let’s see what happens in the future!) and not a big fan of sleeves. (OK, not a fan at all.) I do like the symbolic meaning of tattoos. I like when there’s a story behind a tattoo, and not simply “Oh, I just love dolphins!”
I hope this doesn’t come off in the wrong way because I so do not mean for it to be. This is just me personally.
.-= Stephany´s last blog ..Finding My Niche =-.
Ha! You’re so sweet, you’l have to work a lot harder to offend me = )
I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to know- and I’m with you, I really like when they have a meaning and suit the person.
I adore cherry blossom tattoos. For me they’re so symbolic – of fresh starts, new beginnings and the promise of summer. Can’t wait to see yours and only wish I was brave enough to join you!
.-= Jen´s last blog ..The Gossip Girl Style Challenge – Serena take two =-.
I both love and loathe tattoos. Thoughtful tattoos that really fit a person are great.I think your ideas sound beautiful! Something you just picked out of a book ‘just because’ doesn’t really do it for me.
I have a tattoo in the middle of my back of a compass rose. I thought about it for an entire year before I got it, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just a passing whim. I still love it.
.-= ClaireSuzanne´s last blog ..5 Years =-.
I personally adore tattoos. I do not always like ones that are visible, like around the neck and face, but anywhere else I like them. I love tattoos over piercings any day. I LOVE your idea. I hope to get my second one soon. I just have to make sure it is exactly what I want and that it will honor my grandmother. I love my first tattoo and will always be thankful I waited to find the right artist. http://pixie658.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/tattoo-up-close.jpg
Oh very cool! My mom and sister have lotus blossoms, flowers are just so classic. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for your second one!
I just love cherry blossoms and the rendition you chose and posted is, by far, the best.
Growing up, I was always interested in tattoos, but I was always afraid of the “stigma” associated with them. At the age of 31 and after having my second child, I was no longer afraid and picked something meaningful to me and went for it.
I have one small tattoo. It’s a small kanji that means “mom” and it’s surrounded by two ladybugs that represent my two kids. It’s small, simple, and I love it.
And I believe that’s the key. Each person should love the design/meaning of the tattoo before getting one.
Cheers!

I think tasteful tattoos are awesome!
I definitely like what you’ve got in your “yes pile”.
I would get a tattoo if I weren’t so scared of the pain. I actually got three shots today at the doctors and I think that reminded me, “Hey, self, if you ever get a tattoo, you might just punch yourself, or keel over and die”.
I know what I would get… Something with a birdcage and sparrow, peacock feather, buttons, needle and thread and Bible verse attached. I would have to draw them all out, but those are the ideas that I would put into motion if I was someone else.
:)
Good luck with the rest of the tattoo adventure!!!
.-= Kristi´s last blog ..Quotes and a Photo. =-.
The pain is honestly not that bad- its not like a shot from the doctor, those creep me out too! It’s more like a scratching feeling? If that makes sense?
I have chronic back pain so when I had my back piece done it was horrible. Just up and down awful, I had to go back three times and get physio done in between so I could get my back feeling better. But when I got it back in order it just felt a thousand times more manageable. Thank goodness! I’m hoping this time is less dramatic lol
The old-fashioned illustration look is definitely the way to keep cherry blossoms from looking cartoony. I like the idea of an over the shoulder tattoo.
This is definitely a tattoo week–I just got a new one on Tuesday. It had been 10 years since my last one.
Congratulations on your new work! I’m heading to your blog right now to see if you posted about it!
Posting about it was awkward! I think I haven’t really processed all of the feelings behind it yet. Which definitely means that getting it was the right idea.

Stunning.
I can’t wait to see the end result.
I’m 100% a tattoo-kinda-gal. Hoping for a half-sleeve someday…
.-= Ashley´s last blog ..Getting Healthy: Week 1 =-.
Those are beautiful tattoos! I really like the softness of the cherry blossoms without the bright colours, it’s a much more sophisticated look. I don’t have any myself but my boyfriend has his arms done and my mom and dad both got a tattoo a couple years ago. I want to get one eventually but I haven’t thought of the perfect design yet.
My thought was that Mister would eventually get a sleeve, but he is not a tattoo person and I’ve realized that if I wanted him to have a big beautiful tattoo… maybe in reality I just wanted one! lol
I’m excited for this summer, it’ll be right after my birthday and right before Mister’s. The perfect time.
LOVE mandi’s. :)

I wouI would love to get a tattoo but I’ve never been able to come up with something I like enough to have it placed on my body permanently. And then there’s my aversion to pain … I got my ears pierced when I was 21 and I thought I was going to die :)
I love well-done tattoos and I really want one (luckily Hubby supports that!). Now I just have to figure out what I want and make sure when I’m 90 I’ll still like having it on my body.
Love the boldness of your choice by the way. I think it’ll look really great on you!
.-= rachieannie´s last blog ..The One Where I Peek =-.
I would not have expected you to be a tattoo person, that’s so cool! And it’s amazing to have your husband support it. I’m very aware that if Mister had been against it I would have had some hard things to sift through, and I’m glad that he’s on side with me. Can’t wait to see what you get!
I love tattoos! I have 5, all hidden tastefully, of course. They are how I treat myself as I grow. I really want a 1/2 sleeve, but won’t allow myself to until I finish school… Congrats on getting another one!! Can’t wait to see it!!!
.-= Melissa´s last blog ..In a nutshell. =-.
“They are how I treat myself as I grow.” that is such a beautiful way of putting it! That’s how I feel too. And I’ve been wanting a bigger piece too, but somehow I just keep waiting to be that kind of a person. I finally realized that I AM that kind of a person, I just have to go out and get it done!
No more excuses. Still nervous and excited, but not making excuses!
ooooh pretty!!! Now my mind is whirling with tattoo ideas of my own.
.-= Tia´s last blog ..Flashback Friday- Our Wedding Day =-.
I LOVE what you’re going to do. I’m a fan of vintage pieces that to me will always be more timeless than anything too (as you nailed it) cartoonish or overdone. I’m starting to really fall in love with light coloring vs. bold coloring after a coworker and friend of mine got some sprigs of lavender tattooed on her rib-cage area, with just the faintest hues of purple on an otherwise black and grey design. It’s gorgeous and simple and stunning.
I’m so! excited for you. And I’m so excited! for mine, too. I need to get it scheduled!

I think we are very much on the same page when it comes to style, and I love that =)
I have FOUR tattoos. There’s something you didn’t know! ha.
My first was a little clover, which is the only one I “regret” but no one can even see it, so whatevs.
My 2nd is a really cool abstract cross on my hip.
3rd, is a celtic cross that is designed after a iron-cross.
and my 4th is my favorite, and it’s a peace dove on the inside ankle.
.-= Habbala´s last blog ..Yippee Friday!!!! =-.
That’s NOT something I expected! lol And a cool abstract over your hip? That’s wild! You are full of surprises miss, I like it.
I have 2 tattoos. Just got my second one this past week! And I love it. It’s a little tree with the word dwell beside. I wasn’t sure about the colors when I first got the tattoo, but now am sold on them (a few greeny blues). Anyway, I’m thinking about adding on to my other tattoo from my lower back. It’s a turtle. I’d like to add in some water, but am not sure how to go about it.
I love cherry blossoms and love what you are looking at for your design. I can’t wait to see what it looks like all finished.
Looking through the comments, it’s interesting to see that I’m not the only “not much of a tattoo girl” online. I always feel like the odd one for not wanting one – so it’s sort of nice to know that I’m not all alone! :)
I’m not into tattoos so much because they are far too permanent for my tastes – it’s not that I don’t like them as art on OTHER people – but it’s just not me. (I have a few piercings – belly, double ear, two cartiledge, and nose – so I’m more of a it-can-be-removed kinda girl. :))
I love the cherry blossoms! You are brave, my friend.
.-= OurLittleAshley´s last blog ..The "Right Time." =-.
No no, I think you’re in the majority miss! Don’t worry =)
I’m a fan of piercings too, I just have an incredibly hard time finding ones that suit me. I have had my nose pierced for… six years but I haven’t found a hoop that’s small enough for me to feel like it suits me! They’re all giant!
I’m not really afraid of the permanence factor, but mostly because part of me will always be who I was today. And in the past I’ve been much more awkward and in bad taste than I am now, if I’m only going to become more myself then I don’t mind a reminder of who I was at 25 =)
Your yes pile totally suits you. :) I hate the waiting, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Especially if the artist is excited about the project as well. That’s going to make the final result totally awesome.
I’m a HUGE fan of tattoos. If I ever get a career where they are allowed, or build a wardrobe of long-sleeved work outfits, I’d love to get full sleeves. In the meantime, I’m planning out what I can do to my torso and upper legs. It’s my version of “scrapbooking”.
And as a side note, I was amused to see that your no pile is totally my yes pile. :p
Oh I love that you like my no pile, that’s too funny! And I don’t mean that I don’t like those, or they don’t suit the people who have them- I just have a very specific idea of what I’m looking for and the style I want, and these help give them a better idea.
I’m terrible about doing this though, even for hair cuts I bring in picture of about 10 I hate, and one I like. I just have very specific ideas! lol And I’m a little high maintenance. Just slightly.
I have a love hate relationship with tattoos. I’ve got 2 tattoos but I’m not in love with either. I kind of hate that I didn’t take the time to really think them through (ah, youth, you gotta love it.)

I’m kind of like you – I see a lot I love but wouldn’t necessarily get them on my own body. I really want a new one but don’t know what I want. I’m picky, which is a good thing I suppose!
(Two Kara’s posted in a row! Wee!)

I’ve been thinking about getting one for… six or seven years now. Seriously.
I think the permanence of it scares me, that and i have no design ability whatsoever. I have two ideas for what I want. One is from a painting/sculpture-y thing at my favorite mexican place: a really awesome moon/sun, the colors are awesome, the expressions are great, and it just appeals to me BUT it’s HUGE and I’m afraid of huge. at least on my body. The other idea is a palm tree with a burst of shooting stars soaring over it. Just seems so… me. No idea why. Maybe some day. Perhaps in Minnesota with some of my favorite girls!? :)

It would be so fun and unexpected if you got a tattoo in Minnesota! My only comment: it would make you very achey and it would be hard to have fun and be as mobile as you would want to be. =)
I have a yellow rose (for Texas) on my right shoulder and would love to get another…as soon as I figure out what I want it to be. I think I’ll go with something small that I can get on my heel :).

Oh I love that idea! My mom has a lotus flower tattoo that references her and my sister and I too, that’s something that will never lose its meaning.
I love the cherry blossoms. It’s funny, because I had always imagined cherry blossoms as MY second tattoo, too :) I think for now, I’ll leave ’em to you. You’ll be gorgeous, I’m sure of it.
I LOVE that first one!!! Personally, I am not a tattoo person..I could possibly get a small something someday but it would have to have a ton of meaning, something that wouldn’t be retarded 5 years later – so that is what I also don’t like about them. I don’t like them covering someones body, or stupid things that are meaningless, last minute “OMG I WANT A TATTOO” kind of thing :) I also can’t imagine having a tattoo when I’m 70. Lol.
.-= Alyssa´s last blog ..A Few New Things =-.
Ha! Yes, that 5 years later, 70 years later thing is an interesting one to wrap your head around. My main thought is that being 70 will be strange enough! A tattoo won’t make it any stranger =)
I think that will look beautiful and the whole concept/design totally suits you.
I have two small tattoos. I’m not a fan of HUGE tattoos (for me) and I’m not a fan of sleeves. I think maybe I’ll get one more tattoo on my lower back. Maybe..

They’re not for me…but they can be absolutely beautiful, especially if they mean something to you. I tend to have jewelry fill the roll of pleasant memories/reminders about life/etc. for me, since I can change my jewelry every day and be reminded of certain places, people, and things depending on what is going on in my life. But yes—it is a very personal decision, and I love your “yes” tattoo. It’s very classy.

I’ve wanted to get a tattoo for a couple of months now in memory of my best friend, but I’m just struggling to find something that would do her justice. I’ll admit, I used to associate tattooed people with living a certain lifestyle. And then I began watching Miami Ink. Oh, how I loved that show. I cried during that show. I was blown away by the stories behind why people get tattoos. And I was forever changed.
When done tastefully, I think tattoos can be really beautiful. I love the idea of cherry blossoms. I’m sure yours will turn out wonderfully. I can’t wait to see the results – but wait until June to see them? No way!!! =)
I’m still looking for a way to incorporate cherry blossoms into a tattoo… I love them.
