Friday Finds Aren’t Art Yet
There are some things that they don’t teach you in school that they just should. I would love to have taken a class in school about different movements and styles in design, because then I would have known about mid-century modern design before last year! It’s a beautiful style that’s so recognizable, but until last year I didn’t know there was a word for it- or how to explore it more. As it is, I’m definitely making up for lost time, and the distinct style that we’ve used to decorate most of our studio with has been making my days brighter since this winter.
When I really love something, you’ll find me doing research on it (*adjusts glasses*) and this winter I went to look for a coffee table book for myself at a local shop. I asked someone if they had any book on Mid-Century Modern design in the art or interior design sections, and a gentleman looked at me with an exasperated expression and said: “No, we don’t because that’s not art yet.”
In response I’d like to make an educational pamphlet called

If it’s not art, whatever it is? Is incredibly lovely. If you’d like to learn more about if you can look into the movement’s designers and products, or work as a contributor on my pamphlet!
Have you recently discovered something you now love?
Hey, there’s a cool new furniture shop in the Exchange called 84 1/2 that specializes in selling this type of furniture. Apparently their business is doing really well, and they have clients from across Canada who specifically visit the store for their mid-century furniture selection.
This era is definitely all the rage with Melbourne hipsters at the moment! Can’t say it’s really my thing and it doesn’t appeal to me as a whole. I tend to like the more old, funky, colourful, steam-punk, dark wood and Indian inspired decor. But occasionally individual pieces jump out at me that I do enjoy.
Love those pieces!
That’s such a funny concept – “not art YET” – what does that even mean!? ha ha. I’m not typically a mid-century modern fan, but I’m really digging the dish/creamer set you featured with the leaflike motif. Very pretty!
Mid-century modern design might be my favourite. Sigh… that yellow couch? The chairs? The everything? ;) Heavenly.
Strangely enough, you would think there would be tons of books on this subject… or places online that sell strictly furniture from this era.. but alas, there is not a whole lot.
I have been getting into a lot of modern geometrical design.. I guess in jewelry and artwork. I think it’s the symmetry I’m attractive too.. haha!
xo,

i picked A LOT of the sane stuff on etsy too. i would love to decorate my house with most of these pieces.
Ok, those are some seriously cool pieces. You’ve really got an eye for this stuff!
lovely pieces. funny that he’d say that since I had a few art history classes in college focused just on mid-century art & design. not only did it touch on mid-century but covered movements all the way up through the 80s! Loved that class… :)
Swoon. Mid-Century Modern pieces are so charming and timeless. I especially love that fondue pot!
I am seriously in love with every little thing posted! It’s all amazing and I’m absolutely swooning! This post was really a delightful way to wake up! Keep being ah-mazing <3
Wow, great collection. I especially love the dishes. I am newly obsessed with lemon curd (making it, eating it, imagining all the possible desserts I can add it to…).
I have that fruit basket! Mine’s more of a gold color, but I picked it up at a thrift store a few months ago. Love, love, love this edition, Kyla!
Oh Kyla, my blog has changed so much since stumbling across you! THANK YOU!!!
I have recently rediscocvered my love for dance, art, everything crafty. I lost myself for a few years and it feels so good to be back! :)
Cheers,
S.
Hahaha “It’s not art yet”? When exactly is the magical time at which something becomes art?
My favourite part was that he knew *exactly* what I was talking about and was really exasperated with me, like people were constantly offending him by liking things that they shouldn’t!
