February Inspiration & Type A-ery
Current Inspiration
Valentines Day – I’m not a big holiday person and I have a low tolerance level for saccharine gestures but something about Valentines Day gets me. My version of a perfect Valentines Day is cooking dinner together, drinking a bunch of Pinot Noir, slow dancing in the living room, and watching Rushmore. (I love Max Fischer and you can’t stop me)
The Arts – I haven’t been to a real theatre or symphony show since July. I’m still not used to my decreased arts rations now that I don’t work in theatre, and I’m going to be pawing through show information to try and get my fix this month. It’s either that or ask my technical friends to let me watch a show from up in the lighting grid for old times sake.
Photography – While it’s still too cold to be comfortable outside, I’m loving getting to know my camera better inside, working with my flash and becoming a better editor. I’m especially excited because I just confirmed that I’m working three weddings this summer! *throws a party* Want to see the weddings I was a second shooter on last year? Check them out here– just be nice, I’m an amateur! Fun fact: one of the brides reminded me of Nilsa so much it’s eerie.
Travel – Mister and I have been talking a lot about travel this month, he’s going to be traveling with work after Valentines day so I’m seeing flight numbers, delays, and checked baggage in my sleep. I hate when he’s away, but having the house to myself is fun too. I bet the puppies would love sleeping on his side of the bed…
This February I Will
Be vegan – January was my transitional month, and now (armed with vitamins and recipes) I’m going to try being vegan for a month. I’ve become less of a vegetarian in the past months and more of a carb-etarian so I’m looking forward to a month of being forced to actively think about my food. And also? I’m lactose intolerant, and a month where I don’t have to take pills with every meal sounds brilliant.
Keep my head on my shoulders – This is the month where school could tear me apart. I’m through the initial hurdles and March is where it lets up. If i keep my head down and textbooks open, this month will fly by.
Speak to a realtor about selling the little house – This needs a whole post but for now, suffice it to say that a joke about selling our house to a friend went from a joke to an (informal) offer this week, and it has given us a ton to think about. Coming in at under 800 sq. ft. we live in the perfect little mega-sustainable, central home- but because it’s so small and is never going to be a family home (unless a family of hobbits is interested) we have to be careful about the projects we take on. With the work we’ve done already we have to just keep it as it is or we’ll never recoup our expenses. We’re at the point where we have to actively stop making it a home, and for us that doesn’t work. I made the call yesterday and we’re meeting with a realtor on Saturday. Hold me?
Can I just say how excited I am for you about the second shooting gigs? Your work looks fantastic, and you’re going to learn even more!
And it sounds like this month is a big one for you! I cannot believe the stuff about your little house! Crazy!

Good luck with the house! I got my fingers crossed that the realtor will give you the answers you want to hear. And that sucks about Mister having to travel for work…hopefully for not long! I can’t imagine having to stay in my house alone at night (hasn’t happened yet) because I have way too many nightmares.

I hope you enjoy trying the vegan thing, I love it. I feel like there’s so much more flavor in my life being vegan. ;)
Good luck with the house, I know that’s nerve-wracking since my family has done it so many times, but it’s kind of exciting too when you go looking for a new place. :)
Love!

I can’t believe I’m so late commenting on this. It’s been a hectic week for me. But, I do want to say that I love your inspiration boards! It’s such a cool idea. And, I saw your photos on flickr of Emily Jane & David’s engagement photos, and I thought you did just awesome. You’re such a talented photographer, I love it!
Good luck with being vegan! Do you want to do this permanently or is it more of a trial period, to see how you do? Either way, I’m sure you’ll love the adventure of finding new foods to make. Also, hang in there with school, I know you’ll do great. And how exciting to be looking for a new house!! That is so awesome. I so cannot wait until I’m at a point where I can buy a house. It will be fantastic. ;)

I’m trying to be vegan, too! It’s such a challenge! Good luck!
I don’t know if I could ever go vegan but I’m so anxious to follow your adventure doing it. So excited to follow along.
p.s. Good luck selling the little house! So exciting!

I adore your monthly inspiration series!
And, like others have said, your Valentine’s Day sounds just delightful.
Ooh I’m thinking I need a “Rushmore” + “Royal Tenenbaums” + “Life Aquatic” marathon soon.
Hee- my boy just emailed me this & you must check it out.

Dude, Rushmore is like the best movie ever. Max Fischer rocks my face off.
Also, I just got a new camera (SLR) and love it and am enjoying learning all about it. Your pictures are awesome, you’re super talented.
What are you majoring in? Just curious.

Good luck with the realtor! I’m addicted to the show “My house is worth.. What!?”, so I know all about curbing the updating to make sure you still manage to get your money back.
I hear you about school. For me, February-April are going to be crazy-busy months. I don’t know how I’m going to get it all done but I just have to keep on top of everything and keep school at the front of my mind.
Good luck!

1) Your idea of Valentine’s Day sounds absolutely perfect.
2) I haven’t been to the symphony in over a year. I used to attend almost once a month as a member of the Seattle Symphony because I got dirt cheap tickets. But money is tight and I just can’t swing it right now. It breaks my heart.
3) Your photographs are beautiful. Just…beautiful.
Thank you so much! I’m having fun with the photography, and dirt cheap tickets to almost any show sounds amazing. Hopefully you can get hooked up again soon!

That sounds like an excellent Valentine’s Day (I’d also settle for the Royal Tenebaums as well). Good luck with going vegan, though I’m sure you’ll be fine!

Oh wow, the house thing is a big deal! I can certainly understand what you mean about not pouring more of yourselves and finances into it, especially if it’s not somewhere you see yourself indefinitely!
Good luck on whatever comes next, can’t wait to hear about it!

The collage is amazing. I love your whole section about Valentine’s Day.
Wow, that is exciting and scary news about the home. What a big adventure finding somewhere new that you can expand into and really make your home. I’m excited for you. I know you are going to find a place that will be exactly what you need.
.-= Katie´s last blog ..Don’t feel guilty, it’s only natural =-.
I feel you. It’s why we left California. Even if we could have afforded something, it would be something where we’d had to have poured oodles into it to bring it up to speed and it would never be large enough for friends/family to visit or grow. Even here in TX, our home is “in the middle” and with all the new growth, we have to be careful to not overindulge in our home projects as well or we simply won’t see the return when we sell!
Also, now that I have those Vegan cooking books, I will definitely test the waters on something and if I don’t fail entirely, I’ll send you the goods! LOL

I hope you get to exercise it soon! I’m loooving being home right now, my last trip was disastrous enough to put the travel bug right out of my system.

That sounds like a beautiful Valentine’s Day. I can’t wait to hear if that’s what you do, or if you choose something else. Theatre is something I enjoy, and yet never make time to see. It’s interesting though since I was talking to Jason last night about trying to go to a local production sometime in the near future.
I’d love for you to post some of your favourite vegan recipes that you find this next month. All the best with your school and house.

I also really like Valentine’s Day – even though I have only had a boyfriend on like maybe 3 Vdays? I still love the holiday. I know that you should tell the people you love that you love them, but i also love that there is a day that makes us stop and ‘I love you and appreciate you.’
It’s great that you are meeting w/ a realtor. I did that about a year ago and he was brutally honest – in a good way. He basically told me what to do & what not to do since I also have a tiny place and won’t get much back from investments on various improvements… Good luck!!

Woah i had to reread the paragraph about the house, because I know how much you and hubby love it, but change is always a good thing! :)
i love your photography and can’t wait to see you excel and expand with it!! and the house news…that’s fun and new and interesting.
wishing you good luck in all areas.
thinking of you often!

Thanks Shaina, I’ve having fun with it- weddings are really wildly intense but being a second shooter is the perfect mix of pressure and excitement….without all the responsibility.

I can’t believe you’re maybe going to sell your house from a joke with a friend. You can’t GIVE a house away in Houston! At least you’ll be able to go back and visit whenever you want. And your idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day sounds wonderful…only I’m adding chocolate cupcakes to mine. Is that vegan?
The market is so different here it’s hard to even explain, but I’m going to do a post about it! Most houses here sell in one week when the summer hits. It’s crazy! And chocolate cupcakes can be vegan, depending on how you do them. I’m going to whip some up next week!

I feel the urge to go “Noooooooooo!” cause your house is so cute – from what I’ve seen – but it’s a big step forward toward thinking about a family. 0o0o0o.

So many exciting things going on! Best of luck with going vegans, no pills does sound fabulous. And the house thing? Oh my goodness, it’s crazy how things changed
Love the photos, especially the last set of the couple (engagement, I presume?) They’re so adorable!
I want to try wedding photography but I’m scared to do it! I should find someone to work with for at least a couple weddings to start. :) And I have more friends getting engaged nowadays so I should offer my service to them and build a portfolio. Ahh, I can’t wait for spring!
I’m glad you like them! If you want to get started I would definitely recommend starting with your friends and smaller groups- couples and families. Weddings are fun, but extremely high stakes and high pressure. I would need to have a lot more experience and training before I made a big move into it. Good luck!

the house stuff is exciting!
just remember to breathe :)

Wow, that’s so exciting (and a little bit scary) about your house! I hope it goes well with the realtor! And yay! I love it when I hear about people going vegan, which is kind of silly because I’m not even a little bit vegan. Let us know how you get on? x

Just thinking about your possible move makes me freak out a little. Moving is the worst! But if you’re ready to move on to something bigger that will probably be the best thing for you, Mister, and the puppies. Also, thank you for your email, I’ll write back once I finish this paper that’s currently taking up all of my time :)
Oh I love moving! We moved all the time when I was a kid, so this is a non-event for me, but Mister hates it too which is why we’re looking for a house we can stay in long term now. Good luck with your paper!

so much going on – so exciting! i’m really into photography too (just did a post about trying film out!) & am shooting my sister’s friends wedding in May. It’ll be my first but it’s destination so while I’m nervous I’m super excited.
Off to go check out your photography!

Ok- WHY have I not been notified that you may be moving?! That’s pretty huge news Ky!
My suggestion to you- wait until school has calmed down in March to even think about packing up your house, hehe.
LOL I love you lady, I didn’t know you read my blog frequently! I’ll never break real life news to you here again, scout’s honour.

Marty LOVES it when Lucas is gone because I am a total suck and let him sleep in the middle of the bed with me.
So exciting about the realtor! Fingers tightly crossed that everything goes your way. I’m glad Lucas and I don’t even have to worry about buying a house for a few years, much less selling one! ;)

Gah, your idea of Valentine’s Day sounds dreamy. Ummm, can I come slow dance with you in the living room? Lol.
I’ll be cheering you on with school, my dear—I know you can do it!
Hahahaha, I had to snort laugh at your “family of hobbits” reference!
Are you going vegan permanently or just for the month of February? Good luck! One of my goals in January was to eat less meat so I’ve been going vegetarian 2-3 days a week. It’s working well for me so far; both health and budget-wise.
School is killing me lately, too. I can’t wait for April and for it to be DONE!
I’m just going strict vegan for February, and then I’m going back to being vegetarian, but I think that a lot of these habits will stick. I just also like being able to eat out at restaurants!

The wedding pictures that you took are beautiful. You have a good eye for composition ;)
I am really curious to hear about your attempt to be vegan. Not that I could ever do it, but I’m interested to hear about your experience.
Selling the house is HUGE. Sometimes things that you were joking about become reality much quicker than you think! Good luck!
This has definitely been on our minds since we settled into the house last winter, it’s one of those things if we don’t sell this summer we have to wait a whole year and who knows what the market will be like then!

Wow! Super exciting about the house stuff! I totally understand how hard it is to not put too much into the homing of your home. We’re not in our forever home and as such we don’t always make changes we’re in love with – we make the changes that will look nice, have broad appeal, and won’t cost more than we’ll get back. I would really like to be able to make longer term choices about things. Someday. :)

I’m thinking of going vegetarian for Lent – you have to let me know how being vegan goes! I know how to make cupcakes with applesauce…

It must be Joelle with the red & black hair, the pierced lip, the tattoos and the red and black bouquet of flowers that reminds you of me, right??? =)
I’m tickled you’d think of me outside of this blogosphere.
I am so intrigued about this possible adventure of selling your house … and more importantly, if you do, what that means is next???!!!
Dear Nilsa,
If “what is next” means babies, it’s going to have to be you knocking me up, not Mister lol We’re totally not ready for that next step but maybe if you keep reading for a couple of years.. =)

I still can’t believe that you are actually thinking about selling the house. The other day you were just joking about it. It’s funny how things change all of a sudden. :)
My sister-in-laws tried to be vegan for months at the time and eventually they actually stayed vegan. It’s a pretty huge step. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t even be vegetarian. ;)
I think this is one of those things that we’ve been talking about for over a yea, but never made it onto my twitter feed or my blog. It’s definitely not sudden for us, but I’ll give you guys more info soon! =)

I love your inspiration board! And if you don’t mind, I was hoping to take a page out of your book and give myself monthly goals. Trying to make 2010 Resolutions failed (miserably) so maybe working on a smaller scale will lead to more success??
Thank you for the complement! I had so much fun working on it, and yes! Definitely do your own monthly re-cap, I’ll look forward to reading it!

What a month! You can do it :)
I am excited to see where the adventure with the house leads you. Also? Yes! Go see a show as soon as possible. I haven’t been to the theater in about 6 weeks and I am hoping to go soon in a few weeks. The arts are so vital to my happiness. I love your pictures they are all so awesome (and the red balloons in the engagement photots are so much fun!).

First of all, your wedding photography is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Your Valentine’s plans sound lovely, and just what I would enjoy doing. And good luck with going Vegan for a month. I’m sure you’ll do great with it and continue on!
I’m so jealous you have tech friends that will sneak you into shows. Beyond awesome. And good luck with everything! Oh, and remember how you said it took about a week for e-mail correspondenses at times? It took EXACTLY that with Elsie. I’m so giddy, haha.
Oh I’m glad it worked out! And yes, I have friends who work in theatre but I’m quite sure I would have to pay them in alcohol for them to let me in- buying tickets is probably far easier =)
