Crocheted Bow Headband
Last week I bought some really cute autumn coloured yarn- the mustard yellow is my favourite right now. I’ve been wanting a new headband, so I grabbed my crochet hook and started working on a simple bow design for my first crochet project of the fall.
I really love knitting, but I started playing with crochet last year and since then I’ve had more fun with it every time! I love how easy it is to make small pieces and to make colourful patterns. I love knitting for large pieces, but crochet is quickly becoming my second love. I’m even thinking about making myself a granny square blanket this winter and I’ve been finding some really beautiful patterns that are super tempting…
What do you think? It was fun for a first attempt- and a great excuse to catch up on my favourite podcasts while sitting in a sunbeam :)
Hi Kyla,
I was searching the web for a step by step guide of how to grow out my hair (again), and for the first time I saw your website. Love your pixie hair grow out photos from Nov-May a few years ago. It was so encouraging reading your comments, there are many of us out there with that grow-chop-grow-chop pattern! I’m currently on a “grow” mission, but I always get stuck right before my hair on my side matches up with my neckline in the back. I saw this picture of your crocheted head band (cutie!!), and was wondering what your hair is cut like in the back. My sides are almost this long, and I just need help with what to do in the back. I usually have them start cutting it into a stacked bob in the back, but after a few weeks it just gets so hard to do. Anyway – I’d love to hear about yours.
Thanks so much!!! Have a blessed day! :)
Ooh, that’s a tough one! This was a while ago, but I always just tell my hair stylist that I’m growing it out so I need her to thin it out without losing the length. That always seems to do the trick and keep it from getting unmanageable. I’ve finally decided to keep my pixie look so I’ve stopped growing it out now, but I still do the same thing when I hit a length I like and want to have it keep going.
My best advice is to play with it, change your part, blow dry it all forward without a part, and wear headbands and clips that you love to keep from getting bored with it. Most of the times I’ve chopped it in the middle of a grow were because I wasn’t getting it trimmed regularly and let it get unmanageable, or from boredom. If you can avoid those you should be ahead of the game. You can also find my Pinterest board of short hair cuts here, and I go out of my way to pin cuts that show the front and back for the same reason you wanted to see the back- I hope it helps!
Thanks so much for the personal reply! :) I always forget to vary my blow drying direction, which does help! And I agree 100% on the texturing to help while growing out! I’ll check out your pins, thanks again a million! :)
OMG! Your bow is the cutest! I’m quite fond of yellow, too. :)
this is lovely! I wish I knew how to crochet…someday :)
I’m all about that colour too these days, with a long sieve shirt, cardigan and tank top all added to my wardrobe in the past month.
On another note: what’s tour favourite podcast? Seprate blog post needed. Please.
What a lovely idea! It looks so cute!
Absolutely adore this idea and the beautiful color! I’ve never crocheted and I haven’t gotten past scarves when it comes to knitting, haha. How hard is this really if you’ve never crocheted? It would make a cute Christmas gift.
I’ve been absolutely smitten with yellow lately (I’ve hereby declared it my power color for running) and then I come here and see this and: YES. Just yes. Lovely lovely lovely. And yellow, hurrah!
SO cute, Kyla! I agree with Amber, though – it would definitely take the right person to be able to wear one, and while you are SO one of those people, I am not. Unfortunately. Sad face.
That is super duper cute! I love the color.
I wish I liked crocheting, but I just don’t! i made a baby blanket last year and i found pattern reading to be very difficult! My best friend loves it, though, so I guess diff strokes for diff folks!
How cute! I think they would look awesome on the right person (like you!) but on me they would make me look even younger than I already look. :( I long for those cute headbands lots of people wear but I just can’t wear anything in my hair!
Not going to lie- the first time I wore this out to a concert I got ID’d when I tried to buy a beer… and the legal age in my province is 18! I was more than a little surprised- and when I told the friend I was with she said it was definitely the headband lol :)
I love it! Autumn colors always feel so good, the yellows and oranges and deep bright reds. I bought a crochet needle a few weeks ago and I’ve been indecisive about what I want to make first since I haven’t crocheted in several years. I’ve wanted to take a break from knitting for a while, maybe I’ll try my hand at something like this! :D
Lovely!! I love that color so much, and crocheting while watching something good or in the company of someone you love is the best :)
I love it! I wish I was all crafty and such and could make something so lovely. I adore that color, also.
That color definitely suits you. You did a great job! I really wish I could crochet more than a granny square, but I just don’t think it’s “my craft” if that makes sense. Oh well, good thing there’s Etsy and so many talented people on there whom I can buy from. :)
I’ve tried to learn how to knit quite a few times in the past but I just don’t get it. Even cross stitching is beyond my capabilities … but I do make a mean friendship bracelet!!! I love the bow :)
i love bows, and this one is super cute!
Adorable! I bet it keeps your head slightly warm for the winter. :)
you and your sunbeams ;) you looked so cute wearing this!
“…so I grabbed my crochet hook and started working on a simple bow design for my first crochet project of the fall.”
I love how nonchalant you are about it – oh you know, no problem, I’ll just whip up this piece of awesome-ness! I’ve never crocheted before, (just knitted – and even then I can only do scarves and that’s if I remember how to cast on), because the whole only using one thing (instead of two knitting needles) intimidates me. I think it looks lovely – and the color totally suits you! Maybe there will be a few of these in A Little Thistle soon….?
A-ha, very well done for a newbie!!! I’m sure you’ll work wonders with many crochet projects. Afghans are a great way to practice and create different squares and then have the excitement of combining them in a single blanket or throw. Good luck with it!
CUTE! My grandma tried to teach me how to knit and crochet many times to no avail. I just couldn’t catch on!
Could you be any cuter? Awesome work on the headband! I too am loving anything mustard coloured this autumn.
I love crochet! I learnt it over the summer and since I’ve been obsessed. There are so many gorgeous things to make.
