Crafty Budgeting & My Tattoo Fund
If I have one problem with saving, it’s making elaborate plans and then lacking stick-to-it-ivness. It’s a budget killer no matter how many expense tracking iPhone apps I have! Since I recently made the decision to make my shoulder tattoo into a half sleeve (So! Excited!) I need to start saving my pennies – especially because Christmas gifts are going to be contending for my income soon.
I know that having pretty little things and visual reminders are a big help for me in sticking with goals, so I decided to make a little budgeting tool that would fit my saving style and keep my tattoo money from being spent, in the lowest tech way possible: a tattoo fund jar!
1 large mason jar
A doily or craft paper
An adhesive runner or tape
You will also want access to a printer
1. I took the mason jar and wrapped its lid with a doily, taping it down to the inside of the the lid until I had worked the whole way around. If you work with craft paper, trace around the lid on the back side of the paper and then cut slightly larger than that. If you then cut slices in towards your original circle the paper will bend more easily, just make sure the paper isn’t too thick to let the lid fit!
2. I hopped onto Photoshop and made a quick 3″ x 3″ graphic using a stock illustration I found online and my favorite font. (Picnick is great if you don’t have Photoshop!)
3. I printed my graphic and added some washi tape to the top of my jar, along with the date of my outline appointment.
4. I cut out the jar’s sleeve and used my adhesive runner to tack it onto the jar.
This took me all of five minutes and while it’s not elaborate it’s sweet and effective. I know it be a great reminder to help me to put away my extra money before the big day.
.Skip the graphic and sponge Mod Podge onto the jar instead for a pretty frosted effect
.Scrapbook the jar with inspiration images to keep you focused
.Posses more self restraint than I do! :)
What a great idea. I love it! I too lack the control to save effectively. I might try this idea. Thanks :)
Such a clever idea! I love the creativity behind the goal.
Very cute! My brother in law is a tattoo artist, so if you ever happen to be traveling through the York PA area, let me know! I can hook you up! Haha…hey…there is always a chance right?
coincidence! i literally just did the same thing for my ‘moving to india’ fund! with a mason jar too! sadly no cute graphic :(
–a half sleee?!? how exciting! how do you plan to continue – with additional cherry blossoms or other things?
I’m going to have more cherry blossoms, and I’m going to be adding some birds in too. I think afterward I’m going to do my right arm as a flock of birds- we’ll see! :)
Cute! I bought myself a baby-blue piggy bank to encourage myself to save money. I put my pocket change in it everyday, and we call it feeding the piggy :)
Cute! I’m saving all my pennies in a cup that says “Believe,” but… I don’t know what for yet!
Great idea. Once I actually have an income I might just use this to save up for something I want to get. :)
I absolutely love this idea! I am totally going to have to use this! Thank you for sharing!
P.S. I love your tattoo! It’s so beautiful!
Kyla, what is that font? So cute!
Oh hurrah! I think alot of the anticipation that you build up by saving for something definitely adds to the excitement of getting it. Love the sweet image on the jar! :)
such a great idea. and i’m SO stoked about your sleeve! it’s going to look amazing. :)
i love love love the idea of using doilies on the top of the jar! i so have to make some for my kitchen!
Great idea! I love that you added the date of your outline appointment to to keep things in perspective and give you something to look forward to as the day gets closer.
Love this jar!
I’ve just started my own little savings jar and have been dreaming of something much cuter. I’ve even been shopping online for piggy banks… It just seems so wrong to spend money on a piggy bank. haha. I might just have to refrain and decorate the jar I have! Wonderful idea, my dear!
what a great idea for really anything you want to save for! i should do that for our bike shop we are working on owning!!!
yay for your half sleeve, so excited for you!
xo,

Awh, cute. I just made one of these the other day, but mine says “New Years in Paris”…Hopefully my change adds up quickly!!
Such a cute idea! My boyfriend saves much better with visual cues like this one. I love that it’s attractive AND serves a great purpose. Maybe I should do this for my clothes fund and only buy things with money from this jar. It could be brilliant. And make my bank account happier.
lovely!
Oh, I love this idea! Nothing beats doing something the old fashion way. Can’t wait to see your tattoo as a finished product :]
I love the idea of having a physical reminder. I use envelopes when I’m saving up for something special but I think a pretty mason jar is more fun :)
You should try SmartyPig.com so your tattoo money can accrue 1.75% while it waits! Can’t wait to see it.
Adorable!! That is a good idea for Christmas gifts too (but to make a cookie mix & layer it into the mason jar)! Totally going to do this. Thanks, girl!
I was just talking to a friend about savings jars the other day. I want to start one for a purse. The only thing for me is I never carry cash so I have to get used to taking money out of the bank for the week to allow me to put change and a couple dollars in the jar. I love that you decorated it. I think that provides a bit more motivation.
Totally cute! I feel your pain on saving. I go in for my first round of color {finally!} on Nov. 6th & I am having to pinch pennies too. Why must pretty ink be so expensive?! Guh. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out and join the half-sleeve club :)
Kyla this is so cute! And SO practical! I have a bunch of little envelopes/silk pouches lying around my house full of money for different trips and projects. Your jars are much cuter ;)
You are too freakin’ adorable. Seriously. I love this (and love that you’re getting your tattoo finished into a shoulder sleeve also. can’t wait to see it!) I need to be a lot better about saving my pennies too. Like last night I bought two pairs of boots. Totally unnecessary. Except, you know, they are adorable.
Love your DIY posts!
That’s so cute! We save all our change in a big jar too (only not with a cute label) and when we went to Europe we got a nice chunk of spending money out of that jar! We’re back to square one with the saving now, though :-)
Love the idea! I need to save up some extra cash for some crafting supplies. I guess I should do something like this!!! (my problem is I will think, hm i could go for a latte, $3.00 gone out of the jar.) ….. hahaha!
Great idea!
Sometimes simple is best. Such a great idea to decorate the jar to make it even more appealing! And I’m super excited to see the tattoo that’s going to come at the end of this.
I love little jars/boxes to help with all kinds of organizing…. this is such a cute idea!
So, do you put a designated amount into that jar every day/week?
I need to do this, but like, for everything. Right now I literally have paper money tacked to my bulletin board with a torn off piece of paper that says “for Cuba” over top of it. It’s even less aesthetically pleasing than it sounds.
That is so cute! I have a similar jar on my shelf… alas, it’s for laundromat-designated quarters, not anything fun.
For day-to-day budgeting, I take out X amount of money in cash at the start of the week, then I stick tiny post-its with things like “groceries”, “subway tokens” etc on each of the bills. I leave myself some “fun” money for things like lunch on the go, coffees and incidentals; then the only thing I use my credit or debit card for are “emergency” or “special” items, like plane tickets or vet visits for my cat. It’s pretty low-tech, but it works for me, although it means having to plan social things a week or so in advance (last weekend I had a Thanksgiving thing, so to budget for that I invited everyone over two weeks before). My little cash-only budget has been a lifesaver for me keeping actually money in the bank!
I LOVE THIS! I want to make one RIGHT now!
Love this idea! I have a big mason jar at home – maybe I’ll do this and start a “fancy camera” fund!
Love this idea, Kyla. And its pretty. That always helps. =)
such a great idea! im always trying to think of a way to save some money. this is a lot cuter than a savings account number!
What a cute idea. I’m lucky because at work they’ll split my direct deposit, so I have a small (-er than I woud like) amount put into an account that is specifically for saving for shorter term goals and projects. So its kind of like the tip idea, with more paperwork.
That is such a cute little saving jar. :)
For me, I save for big ticket items by setting up an automatic savings plan. So a certain amount comes out of my paycheck and goes into an ING account. It takes a couple of days to transfer money from ING which I like as I have to really think about a purchase for a few days while waiting for the money transfer to go through…
