Wow! Well thank you, because I’m feeling the love after sharing about the self confidence challenges I’ve been working through. It seems like something that you’ve all been through at one time in your life and I’m so thankful for you sharing your stories, encouragement & notes from the trenches of what you’re working through in your life right this moment. If you haven’t weighed in, I’d love to hear the challenges that you’ve had and what’s helped you through. You can share over here if you’d like to get in a tiny act of bravery for today :)
The thing that struck me as I read through the comments was that there are times when we all forget that what other people do is only about them. I’ve actually made that saying into my desktop wallpaper to make sure that I remember! But when any of us start internalizing the tension between who we are and who we want to be or to who we think we should be or to (hold on to your chair for this one!) who we think that other people think we should want to be, we’re setting ourselves up distress. Whenever I’ve been caught up in this cycle, not only am I hyper aware of myself but I stop being able to appreciate the amazing things that are going on around me & the people in my life.
One of the best ways I’ve found to get break out of my head is getting active and working out, but because it’s 35° C (95° F) outside, I’m going to focus on the second best instead: taking stock of some of the things that are working really well in my life & that I’m feeling really grateful for…
- Cilantro and lime! These are my favourite summer taste pair and I’ve been making simple salad dressings with them that bring so much brightness and energy to anything I toss with it. Amazing!
- Making time for rest & relationships – Balance is not my strong suit and I’ve had the tendency to let my relationships slide down the priority list when my client load picks up. To get away from that I’ve been scheduling my time more carefully, being realistic (conservative even!) about the number of projects I can work on at once, and I’m not working on the weekends at all any more. I have so much more energy during the week now that I’m not wearing myself down, I’m bringing my best game to my clients and I can go to the movies again- which is one of my favourite summer breaks.
- Summer Reality TV – The Bachelorette is almost done and Big Brother is starting soon! In the mean time, I’m shamelessly on Team Jef and will be avoiding looking at the magazines at the grocery store until the finale so I don’t catch any spoilers.
- Stretching my skills – I love designing, but I also love working one on one with clients to help them tackle challenges in their blogs, creative projects and businesses through consulting sessions. It’s something that I (not so) secretly want to offer, so this summer I finally took all the possibility and butterflies that I had about the idea and started pitching them to a few potential Freckled Nest Design clients who I thought could be a match… and I got clients! I just finished my first two- one helping a blogger plan a new direction for her blog, and one where I helped a new business owner develop a brand that marries her sophisticated style together with eclectic service offerings. The feedback I’ve received from the clients has been incredible, and the process has been exhilarating and an amazing growing experience. I’m so glad I took the plunge!
- Enjoying the best daily breakfast I’ve found yet – I recently went to the health food store with Angela’s recipe for Easy Vegan Overnight Oats printed out and bought the ingredients I needed to try it out. It’s official, I’m addicted. Don’t be intimidated by the word vegan- this is basically a hearty, healthy, big breakfast that you mix together quickly the night before and get to enjoy the next morning. It’s also full of the best kind of fibre, and the chia seeds in it have more omgea fatty acids in them than salmon! If you’re vegetarian or vegan, or if you have any challenges with anxiety or depression, this is a breakfast with healing ingredients in it- and you can make them into amazing breakfast parfaits that look like this!! /swoon
What are you grateful for today?
To everyone who shared their experiences of wavering confidence already and anyone who dives in now, please remember that you don’t get any awards in life for developing emotional teflon so nothing effects you. But if you don’t want to be as rocked by what’s going on around you, anytime you get into that uncomfortable zone is an opportunity to work on being a little closer to that.
When something triggers you to head into a place of negativity, low self confidence, or low self esteem, you can work on having a different reaction, and you can work through the feelings that it brings up. The best part is that as you do that work and keep on being yourself you’ll start to grow, and more than that, you’ll start to trust that nothing and no one will be able to derail you from living the big, happy, beautiful life you want to live because you’ll just keep going.
Actually, that sounds like something to be grateful for all on its own :)
“There are times when we all forget that what other people do is only about them.” So very, very true! So very hard to remember, though!
I’m grateful for in-laws with a backyard sprinkler and a cool basement, especially in this heat wave!
My consultation with you about my blog/shop (after we throughly discussed our dogs & lives) was incredibly helpful. If you need any endorsements for them or anything please let me know, I’d love to write you a little snippet or praise them to other people for you. ;)
There has been so much upheaval in my & my family’s lives right now. Things seem to be a little crazy & confidence-destroying, but out of that craziness I’ve been overwhelmingly grateful for the amazing family that I have & the things I see God loving & blessing us with. My family has been so wonderful to me & I’ve realised that when one of us struggles we all do, which is kind of a beautiful thing to have in a family. :)
I am grateful for hugs from my girls. They pop up right at the best moments. On a silly note, I love how handsome my husband looks in his collared shirt, jeans, and cowboys boots, carrying a brief case when he comes home from work!
It is so good to read about another Big Brother watcher!! I have been watching that show since it first aired so I am a huge addict! I don’t think anything will compare to last season though.
I post on gratefulness every single week – I think it’s that important.
At the moment I am grateful it is nearly the summer holidays :)

I am grateful that my parents have given me all the support, love, and opportunity to allow me to succeed and I am so unbelievably grateful for my three year old brother who I still have a few weeks with before returning back to college.
Your family sounds like such a fabulous support system. Enjoy your time at home before you head back to college- a three year old brother would be so sweet & fun!
I love this post! I love grateful lists! I need to do one myself. In just the past few days I hit a big wall of depression, but I think it is hormone related. I need to really rely on taking care of myself right now and doing the things that work. Glad you are doing the same!
I’ve been really needing to make time so I can process some of this stuff, and its been really rewarding. If you need it, I hope you can carve out some Kristin time soon :)
Once it gets to be a bit chillier, you can make overnight oats into overnight oatmeal in a rice cooker; 1/4 cup oats, 3/4 cup liquid, add a spoon of chia/wheat germ/flax, and then put the insert in the fridge overnight. All you have to do when you get up is press on! :)
(obviously, it’s very malleable – you can add nut butters at the end, pumpkin during the cooking time, etc)
Bridget!! You know all the best things- that’s such a great idea! I’m loving the cold breakfasts for the summer, and I think you just talked me into buying a rice cooker in the fall.
OH! And I bought my first food processor last weekend! I wanted to call you, I was so excited for all the possibilities it opens up. I’ve been making vegan chocolate pudding from Oh She Glows, with frozen avocado, frozen banana and cacao. It’s heavenly :)
Can’t wait to skype soon <3
You’re slowly filling your kitchen with wonderful appliances, I love it! :)
The other awesome thing about food processors? Pie crusts. Not to mention homemade bread crumbs and shredded cheese.
I am also on Team Jef!! All the way!!!
Go team Jef!! I love how the producers keep putting his tall hipster hair in higher and higher wind conditions. I feel like there must be a behind the scenes competition where they’re taking bets on when the structural integrity of his hair product will fail ;)
“…when any of us start internalizing the tension between who we are and who we want to be or to who we think we should be…we’re setting ourselves up [for] distress.”
This is such a great point. Being involved in the blogging ‘culture’ and seeing so many unique and creative people online, we’re often under so much pressure to appear more creative or alternative ourselves. But the unique points that make each of us who we are, and our individual interests, create a personality that adds to the blogging world. Instead of us all being the same type of person. Keep it up, Kyla. :)
Absolutely- and the more that we can enjoy the people around us, in real life and online, without making what they’re doing about us, the more fun we can have when we’re out in the world. It’s a tough habit to break, but I’m determined to keep working on it. Thanks for the encouragment :)
I’m grateful for my sister. Even though she drives me mad, she’s away this week and I realized how much I love having her around. No one knows me better than her and she’s the person I’m closest too.
Also I can’t wait for her to return with all sorts of goodies from San Diego Comic Con :D
That sounds like such a great relationship, Sonya. And Comic Con goodies?! That sounds so amazing! :)
Big Brother starts soon! Ahhh, so excited!
And just to let you know, I always love getting together with you. I cherish our coffee dates, they’re always fun.
I forgot that you’re a Big Brother fan too! Last year was the first season I watched, so I’m hoping this is a good one too :)
