A Weekend of Together Before A Week Apart
One of the things that I’ve been working on recently is setting aside dedicated time to hang out with Jesse. Owning Freckled Nest is my passion and the work that I do makes me so happy it’s hard to describe- but in day to day life, it’s like my business partner Leigh-Ann and I have a child together who we need to take care of from the moment she wakes up until she goes to sleep. It’s not really possible to balance that with the rest of my life- so instead I try to shape when I work around my life in a way that makes me as happy & energized as possible, and part of that means making sure I have lots of time to catch up with Jesse.
One of the best things for getting me away from the laptop has been going to Winnipeg Jets games this winter. We were lucky to get in on the public sale and split season tickets with friends. I’m not a big sports girl but I love live games, and being season ticket holders has helped me give more evenings to hanging out with Jesse, along with Jesse’s best friend and his fiance. We’re going to Mexico for their wedding next month, and it’s been to hang out on a weekly basis and as a lead up to the trip!
This week Jesse left for Ontario on work & then returns for a night before heading out on a trip to his best friend’s bachelor party in Vegas, and all last week I was working really hard on launching client projects. We decided to make this weekend a time to catch up, so we spent Friday night on the couch watching our favourite show, chatting and goofing around, went to the hockey game on Saturday and ventured out early on Sunday for a big tasty brunch before his flight left.
With Jesse’s work meaning he has to travel to Ontario more frequently than before it was nice to have dedicated together time in the days before this trip. While I might not travel for my work, because I can work from the studio or home at any time, sometimes without realizing it I can slip into living in the Land of Online which might as well be across the country. When that happens, it’s good to know that simple things like brunch can be the perfect answer for bringing me back to earth.
And it doesn’t hurt that it’s a lovely excuse for yummy weekend meals made by someone else! ;)
How wonderful!!! Hey…those Seripops look familiar, were you at our Stella’s Plug-In location for your yummy brunch??? I really enjoy your blog! xoxo
oh i super jealous that you get to go to jets game!
i pretty much live for hockey! i live near toronto but i can’t afford to go to their games, so expensive.
enjoy (:
I love a live sports game. There’s just something about the atmosphere – the fans, the beers, the soft pretzels – I love it all. I couldn’t sit down and watch the same game on the tv though. I’d fall asleep for sure!
I know what you mean with this; Knight and I both travel for work, though I tend to travel more frequently due to my job requirements as of late. We try to have a date night or two before I leave even if it’s as simple as popcorn and a movie at home, it’s still so much fun, not to mention necessary.
I love the photos you took along the way and glad you are having time together!
It’s so important to make time for loved ones in our crazy, busy lives! My boyfriend and I work completely different hours so we don’t really get to see each other during the week but Saturdays are ours. I also make sure I Skype my mum on a Sunday because my family are important to me too, especially because we’re all a bit scattered around the world these days!
Looks like you had a wonderful weekend!
Time spent with your loved one is always fun! I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves.

Oh man, so lucky to get to a Jets game! I’m a huge Penguins fan, I grew up with it, but the Boy isn’t much of a sports fan at all, so I drag him with promises of nachos. :) Love a little date night too – sometimes it’s hard to get away from work (I know, I bring it home and can’t let it go more often than I’d like), and making the time to do something special is always great. Looks like such fun!
ps – love the new pic!
Love this post Kyla! So healthy + wonderful. xoxox
I love that photo of you two – you are glowing!! I am glad you got to spend some quality time together.
And – I have to say I feel lucky to have gotten to meet Jesse as I don’t think many of your readers have! He rocks. ;)
sweeeeet! I went to an Ice Hockey (I know, you guys call it Hockey) game in Switzerland last year with my Canadian Best Friend. Unsurprisingly she loves Ice Hockey and was determined I would enjoy it too. Luckily I did enjoy it very much – it’s so face paced, and almost scary!
I can’t wait until next summer when I get to visit Canada for the first time. Eeee! Maple Syrup galore!

I love what you said about the nature of having your own business – “without realizing it I can slip into living in the Land of Online which might as well be across the country”. I definitely get in that mode sometimes, and realize that even though we live together, I’ve hardly spent time with my husband! Yesterday afternoon we hung out in our pj’s, napped, and marathon-watched How I Met Your Mother. Best afternoon in a long time. :)
So awesome that you made it to a Jets game! I really think it’s so excellent that Winnipeg has an NHL team again!
Looks like a fun weekend! You’re so lucky you got to go to the Jets game!

Your date nights look like a lot of fun :) I would LOVE to get season tickets for hockey games but Oilers fans are so crazy, there’s a lottery just to get put on the waiting list for season tickets. We’re lucky if we go to one game/year. At least this year we have cable, so we can have date nights at home, on the couch, with a plate of nachos between us :)
So glad you two are carving out time for each other – and your dates look like so much fun!
It sounds like a really great weekend! My boyfriend got me into hockey – he’s a huge New York Rangers fan – and we’re actually going to a game for our anniversary in January.
Live hockey games are basically the most fun. My friend’s brother works at the arena here so she can sometimes get free tickets to Canucks games and it’s always a blast! You’re so lucky to have season tickets
Aw love this post! I think dedicated date nights are so important. This is something we need to work more on at our house as Eric is consumed with school lately and when he gets really busy it’s too easy for me to throw myself into other things and then we rarely see each other between 8 am and 9 pm! On Saturday night we made a bunch of finger food, some delicious martini’s and other cocktails and played a few rounds of Clue and it was perfect!
Oh I love that you guys play board games together! We do too, they’re a lot of fun- though we’ve had to ban boggle because Jesse has practically memorized all the three and four letter words in the English language. His family used to play and they’re SUPER competitive when they play games! lol
I love that too! We have recently started playing lots of card games together as bonding time. I have yet to beat Joel in Skip-Bo, but I killed him in a game of Progressive Rummy when he taught me how to play (which was extra fun because I was sort of against it at first, haha).
We’ve been playing other games too, but mostly sticking to cards. I don’t even know how it happened, it just ended up being our thing to do together when he got out of class or I got home from work. We’ll make some food, drink some wine, & just hang out being nerds together. :)
Looks like a bunch of fun.
