A few sweet things
Lately there have been no end of things that have been delighting me, and while I might not be as ahead of my ideal holiday schedule as I’d like to be I’ve been letting the holidays wash over me and it has me in such an open, festive mood! I’ve been all smiles underneath all the scarves I pile on while I wander my prairie city’s streets, and it seems like the positivity is everywhere I look from the people I bump into at the grocery store to the new twitter friends I’m following.
Here are some of my favourite sweet things at the moment…
Friends! I’ve been meeting such great people locally and online lately and I feel so inspired and lucky. My oldest friends are about to return home for the holidays, and I’ve been reconnecting with my girls from far and wide. Nothing’s as good for my heart as being surrounded by good people.
Goofy Puppies! I bought a box of Christmas oranges last week and gave the dogs a tiny taste of a slice each… and they’re obsessed with oranges! When I eat them they gather around, make giant saucer eyes, and pray they’ll get a nibble. It makes me laugh every time!
Internet Kindness! Remember when I blogged about my grandma being the host for Romper Room in 1960s? Her old TV station found the post, contacted me, and sent me a DVD of the only existing footage of her from the show! It’s my Christmas surprise for my whole family, and I can’t wait to show them.
Planning my next tattoo! I’m going to my consultation on Friday to talk about all of my ideas with my artist. My outline is in January and my colour will be done in February- I can’t believe how fast it’s happening! Tomorrow I’ll be sharing my photo references so you can see the “before” stage.
Holiday movies! From mid month until Christmas I start watching all the vintage holiday movies I can snap up, I’m starting with White Christmas and The Nightmare Before Christmas. That covers a few kinds of classic in my books! :)
Collections! I’ve been collecting vintage portraits for an illustrated portrait wall I’m building in my house, along with small silver trays (the one above is my favourite!) I’m starting to keep a watch for old fashioned painted metal toys too- especially model airplanes, space ships and astronauts.
Is anything making your December particularly sweet?
Your puppies remind me of how my beloved Hamish would coming running every time someone bit into an apple – even when he was really old and totally blind. Just the sound of an apple would make him crazy and we always had to share. And he knew it was an apple too – not a pear or carrot or anything else would get him excited.
And like many people, posts like these put a smile on my face. I have to say, one of my favourite recent Christmas movies is The Holiday. Usually I don’t like rom-coms but Jack Black and Kate Winslet melt my heart in that one. But mostly I’m a NMBC girl myself and even listen to the soundtrack all through the year.
Holiday Inn is my favorite… :)
something making my december sweet: jeans with a little stretch that fit good and make me feel better about myself.
this is such a fun post. i love hearing about the footage from your grandma. that’s going to be a wonderful treat for your family. :)
that is so awesome about the dvd of your grandmother’s show. seriously the internet makes me so happy sometimes.
Hmmmm…wonder how my pups would feel about oranges. Our oldest Mutt, Sadie, hates veggies, but our youngest Mutt, Luke, will eat absolutely anything. We haven’t tried much fruit though….
Ah! What an awesome treat for your family to have those early videos of your grandma. That is incredibly sweet. My dog and her antics always leave me laughing.
This December having fun with my teenage cousins, Christmas cards in the mail, and Christmas music is making my December pretty sweet!
That is so awesome that you got that DVD for your family!!! I hope they didn’t read this post and wreck the surprise!
I love Christmas oranges too and my husband doesn’t feel either way towards them so I have to eat the boxes almost all by myself. From when they came out last year to when I went into labour, I ate 3 boxes myself pretty much! Let’s call it a pregnancy thing…
I also love Christmas ice cream, reindeer decorations, and Christmas movies, Christmas carols (you should see baby dance to them…so cute!), and pretty much Christmas in general (even Christmas shopping!).
What a great post :) Now we know where you got your middle name!
Sweet thing going on in my neck of the woods—we are almost done with the remodeling. Thank goodness. I’m so over the wood dust, cluttered stuff due to shuffling around and whatnot.
Particularly sweet things going on here are the cat and dog and some festive Christmas lights I just put up. And I’m grateful for my friends on and offline and that people are buying my knits. My finances are a mess and these sales are really helping me out :)
Such a feel-good post – seems like things are really going well for you. And I LOVE that the Romper Room folks sent you footage of your grandmother! I’m sure your family will be so pleased. (Do they read you blog…?!)
This made me smile. :)
I think I’ve watched Scrooged about 20 times this season. I big fuzzy <3 Bill Murray and I don't care who knows it!
I gave my pups their first taste of mandarin orange this week and now Stella is obsessed. Wolfgang spat his out but Stella gobbled hers (and his discarded bit) right up. After I peel an orange and my fingers are all citrus-smelling, she buries her face in my hands and snorts. It is adorable.
So I cried a little today when I went to Netflix to add some Christmas movies to my instant queue – and found that they DON’T HAVE ANY GOOD ONES.
I love this.
I have only really happy things to blog about lately and I feel like I’ll bore people to death with them but you are living proof that it can be fun, so I’ll have to work on it :)
That is so exciting to have footage of your grandma! Your family is going to be so thrilled about it!
Question for you, how do connect to local people through Twitter? =/ Either we don’t have a lot of tweeters around me, or I’m doing something wrong.
Your next tattoo! Ooooooh! I can’t wait to see/hear/read details! So very awesome. I have two more I’m excited to get, but I’m not quite sure on timeline at this point.
And holiday movies: YES. I’ve been itching to watch Elf and Home Alone as of late.
Making my December especially sweet: The fact that I get to see my sister and brother-in-law in T-minus ONE WEEK and counting.
Josh and I eat lots of clementines. He peels them, and the dogs and I all crowd around making saucer eyes while he doles out slices.
yay tattoo time!!!!!!!! that is so exciting and i am excited for you! i can’t wait for tomorrow to see the design i am sure it will AMAZING! i have an appointment on jan. 15th to add to my arms just a little design but i can’t wait; only a month away! will be sharing that too when the time comes!
tattoo power!!!
xo,
cb
I love mandarin oranges – I don’t blame the puppies for wanting a slice! My moms dog loves banana’s :)
I am feeling quite overwhelmed lately and I’ve hit that point where I feel like I’m just swimming/pushing through to get to next Wednesday when I’ll officially be on HOLIDAY! I am letting all the holiday cheer infect me a little bit, though :)
Awwww, that does sound deliciously sweet!! I’m looking forward to our annual girl’s Christmas pj party this weekend, complete with flannel pj’s, almond champagne, ginger cookies, and Christmas movies!
Your puppies sound like mine! When my dog was a baby we would let him nibble on Christmas oranges. Then we found out that he had an acidic tummy issue and we had to stop giving him them. He was sad and moped around for days!
Your positivity is absolutely inspiring! Your December sounds wonderful… and it’s only half over!
I’ve been sweet on heading back home (PEI) this weekend, even if it means a 19-hour drive from Toronto in what could be miserable weather. I’m going to make an appropriate selection of mix CDs… from the “Yay Roadtrip!” ones to “Oh God We’re Trapped On The 402” ones to the inevitable “I Can’t Wait To Get Out Of This Car, My Ass Is Killing Me And Let’s Make A New Rule That No One Is Allowed To Eat Taco Bell While In A Confined Space With Others” one.
That’s awesome that they contacted you and sent you the footage! I’m so excited for your family to see it. :)
I’ve been watching too many Christmas movies lately. I’m a sucker for ANY kind of Christmas movie!
That’s awesome about the DVD! And yay for TNBC, though that’s my Hallowe’en go-to movie :)
My mom used to watch Romper Room! That’s so great that they sent you the footage!
Question for your grandma- how it she stay so darn svelte?? Seriously, she’s a tiny little lady :) And do you know if she got to choose her own clothes or was there a wardrobe department?
Hi Paige!
I think my grandma’s figure was mostly genetic- she used to have a tiny, tiny (!!) waist and has belts that no one else in the family can wear to prove it lol She’s very petite and my little sister has a similar build, which has made my sister’s vintage wardrobe explode :)
I just called her to ask, and she says hello, and that she got to choose her own clothes for the show :)
Baba Roma rulz. Is she on Facebook? :)
PS. I just forwarded this to my mom. I think she’s hyperventilating into a paper bag…a Miss Roma shout out! I bet if your grandma wanted to start a Romper Room army, a league of Boomer minions would come out of the woodwork (it would be a friendly army, of course).
So cool that you have a DVD of footage of your grandma! Too cool!
December has flown by for me! I’ve enjoyed a couple of Starbucks holiday drinks which always makes me smile. Also, I became an ‘aunt’ on Monday as my best friend had a baby boy. And my other best friend is in labor right now! So that is making December very, very sweet for me!
knowing that i get to embark on another part of my life in february is making me endlessly happy!
my own goofy puppies! it only takes a big tail wagging to get my heart a-flutter!
late night chinese food with my mother has also been extra special :)
this post made me so happy to read! glad to see someone else appreciates goofy puppies :)
This post makes me happy. :)
I’m really proud of the fact that with the exception of our 10-year old newphew all the gifts we bought this year for Christmas meet my handmade holdiay quota. It was not as hard as I thought it would be – I’m just glad I started earlier because almost everything was ordered online. (Hellooooo Etsy!)
I love that they sent you footage of your grandma! That’s so sweet of them!
I love classic Christmas movies, especially Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys. A Christmas Story is a good one, too, though last year was the first time I watched it!
